UK Top 40: Battlefield 3 beats Batman: AC

Kinect Sports 2 lands 18th.

Battlefield 3 has stormed the UK chart to arrive first in the all-formats listing.

EA's first-person shooter is the tenth biggest UK launch of all time in terms of units sold and ninth in revenue. It sold more copies in week one than all seventeen previous Battlefield games combined and twice as much as Medal of Honor last year.

53 per cent of copies bought were on Xbox 360, 29 per cent on PlayStation 3 and 10 per cent on PC, although those numbers do not count digital download sales, such as through EA's Origin service.

Batman: Arkham City is second, while FIFA 12 and Football Manager also both shuffle down a place to accommodate Battlefield.

Rare-developed Kinect Sports: Season 2 was the next highest new entry, leaping into 18th.

The only other fresh entry to the chart was Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi, which arrived in 23rd.

Disney Universe, PS3 re-make House of the Dead: Extended Cut and Kirby Mass Attack all failed to register in the all-formats' top 40.

Out last week, Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn managed a late entry into the chart in 35th place, no doubt helped by the launch of the Tintin movie last weekend.

This leaves the rest of the top ten remains largely unchained, with Just Dance 3, Forza 4, The Sims 3 and Zumba making up fifth to eighth place.

Toy tie-in Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure continues to scale the chart ahead of Christmas, with Rage in tenth.

The full chart will follow.

Only the 10th biggest UK launch, I bet EA bean counters will not be pleased with that after blanket marketing for the past few months.....
  • Ranger101 #2 7 months ago

Ahh, that explains why the 360 servers are always so damned full!
  • Nephirion #3 7 months ago

In a fortnight will be MW3 No1 on all formats mark my words ...
  • roz123 #4 7 months ago

@aidey6 That is not including PC digital sales which are going to be significant to this game. But 10th biggest launch is still huge.
  • Jonny5Alive7 #5 7 months ago

They need to start including digital downloads, because I would imagine BF3's figures would be even higher. Its a big game for the PC.

@Nephirion of course it will, but that doesn't make better than anything else. Zumba Fitness was at #1 for a while.
  • metroid455 #7 7 months ago

why Gears, Just Dance and Zumba fitness are up there and not Atelier Totori,Rune Factory Oceans or Disgaea 4 just saddens me!!
  • kar #8 7 months ago

@aidey6 I dare say the relative popularity of the PC version of this game would impact that. As the above results do not include those from Origin.

Kinect games are doing poorly, probably because they don't do anything outstanding.
Its funny to see Mario Kart Wii above Gears of War 3. That game is old.

53 per cent of copies bought were on Xbox 360, 29 per cent on PlayStation 3 and 10 per cent on PC

So....if that's the breakdown, and downloadable services aren't included, what were the other 8% of copies sold on?

    Kinect? What's Kinect? :p
  • aidey6 #13 7 months ago

@kar and @roz123 ; personally i'm impressed that they've done so well and hope that it continues to sell well for DICE. I reckon it will be huge MP and expect the support from DICE to be good.

As far as BF3 is concerned, it does seem to be a little bit of a meaningless comparison if we don't have digital sales included. Out of the 20 or so people that I know that bought it on PC, all bar me bought it digitally. I doubt it's going to be the difference between 10th biggest and biggest, but it's going to have some impact. It was the lead format for this game after all.

Is the data about digital sales simply not available publicly?

@EddieMink - get over it. Virtually every review slates the single player, and it's supposed to be a headline feature. Bioware are really straining to point out that ME3's multiplayer is going to be optional, so it's less relevant.

Anyway, I'd personally knock BF3 down to 8/10 just because of Battlelog on the PC.
  • Feanor #16 7 months ago

Battlefield fanboys whining because the lousy, COD-wannabe single player deservedly got the score marked down is amusing to me. Please, continue.
  • revan8 #17 7 months ago

Ea choose ps3 as the tool to show console stuff plus exclusive dlc. Why??? Xbox sold nearly twice as many and will continue to.
  • Ranger101 #18 7 months ago

    Haven't touched Disc 2.
  • tiny_Eggy #19 7 months ago

@revan8 the world is bigger than the UK and US.
  • Collymilad #20 7 months ago

I hope BF3 does extremely well because it deserves it.

The multiplayer is just amazing, leagues ahead of anything else.
  • Machetazo #21 7 months ago

ok, so the full chart appeared - but the Predictions outcome Chart didn't follow in its wake! :( That's a good part of the whole chart thing.

@EddieMink - BF3 is far from 10/10 (on the 360 at least) in my opinion. It's full of weapon balancing problems, squad management problems, vehicle balancing problems, hit detection issues, players clipping through walls on a massive scale, maps that are too big for the limited 360 user cap and virtually non existent destructible environments compared to BC2.

All in all, I've been really disappointed with the 360 version. It lacks any semblance of synergy that BC2 had. Ironically, I think I'll enjoy the SP more when I get round to playing it.

It does sound unlike anything else I've ever played and for that, DICE should be commended. It's just a shame they didn't seem to translate that level of attention to the gameplay.

If EA are going to hype the SHIT out of a game like it's the second coming of Christ then they need to deliver. They haven't. As it is, BF3 doesn't even seem to hold a candle to BC2.

10th is a pretty good start for BF3. From reading comments from EA it was fairly obvious that they never expected it to surpass the COD franchise at this state. I believe the target was aiming to take 30% market share from them.

BF3 is an awesome MP game which where it counts. Anyone expecting a mind blowing campaign from this game was being a bit silly.

As far as Kinect Sports 2 goes surely that tells MS that no one really gives two fucks about yet another Kinect Sporting pack. It looks bloody awful.

Mario Kart Wii, does that include the ones bundled with the console? Cause that games just keeps on selling, more than 30 million copies and still near the top 10 of the charts 3 years after its release.
