PC Rage AMD drivers released

Should improve performance.

Drivers that should improve the performance of the PC version of first-person shooter Rage have been released.

The AMD Catalyst Rage Performance Driver is available to download now.

It features:

  • Significant performance gains for single GPU configurations.
  • Compatible with AMD Radeon 6000 and AMD Radeon 5000 series of graphics products.
  • Includes the latest OpenGL driver component for Rage performance optimisations.

"If you have an AMD/ATI graphics card, the new Rage Catalyst drivers are out!" reads a Tweet from the official Rage game Twitter page. "BE SURE to grab them immediately."

While Rage isn't out in the UK until Friday, US gamers have been playing it since Tuesday.

Some PC gamers have complained that their version of the game performs poorly, with shoddy textures and crashing.

Bethesda marketing and PR boss Pete Hines suggested on Twitter that there may be a conflict between the game and drivers used for the Battlefield 3 beta.

"If you are crashing to desktop right away w/ ATI card you are using the BF3 preview drivers," he said. "CTD is 100% with those drivers. Need to update."

    Looks like the US gamers are the beta testers for us Europeans now...
    I hope I can finally order the game without any worries.

    I owned two ATI HD 5870 cards in CrossFireX for seven months and in that time I had tons of issues with OpenGL games such as Doom 3, Quake 4 and Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath which exhibited glitches unless I manually copied an ATI OpenGL DLL from an older driver set into the respective game folder. The newer files just didn't work for some reason. Funnily enough I've had no problems with those OpenGL games since I switched to back to NVIDIA and a GTX 580.

    ATI had a bad reputation for lacklustre OpenGL drivers in the past and when I found out RAGE was using OpenGL I had an inkling that the AMD cards might have some issues. Fair dos to AMD though as they have quickly addressed it with a new driver release.

    @Darren

    I also own two 5870 in Crossfire and have been hit with the OpenGL bugs in recent Catalyst drivers.

    Similar to you, in titles like the original CoD I've had to locate an older ATI OpenGL DLL and copy it into the same folder as the EXE to make many older games run. AMD/ATI properly broke their backwards compatibility with OpenGL several versions and many months ago (more than a year?) and there's still no fix in sight.

    To late, cancelled my preorder already. I was so looking forward to this as well but I'd rather wait for some actual patches (you know, that have been tested and QA'd) and driver releases rather than use some duck tape fix.
    What a waste. PC gaming master race indeed lol

    For me, the new drivers only worsened the issues. :(
    6850 here.

    If these guys, actually if all developers released demo's of their games they would find these things out beforehand instead of release day. I hate how a thing like a demo/ demonstration vesion has been turned into this exclusive bs "Beta" aimed at people who've already purchased the game.

    I am wondering on which PCs they tested this game if there were no drivers available. Then again I aways wonder why there have to be new drivers for single games.

    I like how this is AMD's fault and not id software's fault. Sure, there are openGL problems with AMD cards (ATI) but surely this would have been obvious during testing at id software?
  • Goodfella #9 8 months ago

    Glad I finally changed sides and went with nVidia (GTX 460) for my latest card a few months back. The game appears to run flawlessly with it.

    Yeah, kind of makes you wonder if there was any testing at all lol. Mind you know, I guess being part of Bethesda broken releases are kind of traditional ;)

    But I just upgraded my drivers to the 11.10 preview to get better framerates for the BF3 beta >_>

    Seems to be a problem with AMD cards with the release of almost every big game at the moment. Whatever the reason for this is, they need to do something quick before they completely lose their place in the market.

    They could really use improving CCC as well, 5 minutes with that convinced me to go Nvidia despite the poorer performance : money ratio.

    Works flawlessly with my 560ti...gonna get stuck in later. Really don't understand how DICE have concentrated on PC and got console version running well but iD cannot without gimping PC version.

    Bah, I still have an old 4850, it has always performed exceptionally well, despite its age. It doesn't look like these drivers are compatible though. Is anyone running the game with a 4850? Is it very glitchy? Any fixes for this card? If not, I'll probably just get it on 360... can't afford to upgrade until after Christmas really.

    And besides, Dark Souls tomorrow. \o/

    Edit: Well... Friday for Dark Souls, but ShopTo just despatched it, so tomorrow for me... hopefully. :)

    In my experience in times of recession and cut backs, the QA guys are the first to go, be it in games industry or enterprise software development. :(

    Don't know which version to get;

    One thign to say about PC version of Rage half assed-console port.
    Shame on you ID and Carmack.
  • NotSoSlim #20 8 months ago

    Can't condone piracy but if PC version gets ripped a new one by it you cannot blame gamers due.to shoddy work
  • MasterNameless #21 8 months ago

    @NotSoSlim

    I know what you mean, it is tempting, as I'd like to see how it runs on my 4850 before actually spending the money. There aren't any demo's available are there?

    Nevermind, a quick google answers that question: No.

    From what I've been reading, and without an upgrade, it's probably best to just get it for 360 anyway.

    @nagi - I read on another forum that AMD cocked up the new driver release by uploading the incorrect one which had an old version of OpenGL and not the fixed one for this game. It has apparently been fixed now so if you have the wrong version it might be worth you redownloading them again and reinstalling. I've seen reports from other AMD card owners that these correct drivers have fixed the issues for them.

    My copy of the game should arrive tomorrow but I'm puzzled as to why id released the PC version without a v-sync option, especially as both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are v-synced and running at 60 fps. I know you can force it through the driver control panel but, even so, it's a silly omission IMO given how the developers have coded the game to run at 60 fps using auto-detected settings. Didn't anyone at id think screen tearing might spoil the game? :o

    I actually saw a joke post on a forum yesterday which listed the minimum specs for RAGE on the PC along with the recommended specs... an Xbox 360 or PS3!!! lol

    this is why I game on console. I only get to game like an hour per day - I don't have time to trouble shoot this stuff. I work all day, gaming shouldn't be work.
