Knights of Old Republic £3.50 on Steam

Star Wars weekend deal goes live.

BioWare's iconic role-playing game Knights of the Old Republic will be half-price, £3.50, on Steam this weekend.

It's part of a weekend-long Steam Star Wars deal timed to coincide with the Blu-ray release of the Star Wars Saga.

Other discounted Star Wars games on Steam include Battlefront II, Republic Commando and Empire at War.

Knights of the Old Republic reinvigorated the Star Wars licence for gamers. It's set thousands of years before the Star Wars films. You are a mysterious stranger with no memory of your past. You escape an attack on your rescuer's ship, and your subsequent mission to rescue a Jedi marks the beginning of an epic tale.

Eurogamer called Knights of the Old Republic as "the best Star Wars game since X-Wing and/or Tie Fighter, if not ever". Kieron Gillen's Knights of the Old Republic review for Eurogamer awarded a delicious 9/10.

The success of Knights of the Old Republic lead to a sequel (developed by Obsidian) and to BioWare's biggest ever project, MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. The success of KOTOR also helped bring about the Mass Effect series of games, which share many similarities.

    Just finished it myself actually, still amazing fun and well worth it (all the games on offer are!). You can really see where the the real sequel came in the form of Mass Effect. Shame KOTOR 2 isn't in there I'm on the hunt for that after replaying 1.

    Such a shame we'll not see a proper KOTOR sequel for a very long time but there is no way they will ever put out a decent single player RPG KOTOR when they have their crappy MMO to pimp :(

    Why is this news exactly?
  • Stuz359 #3 8 months ago

    With the advent of a steam release, does this work bug free now?
  • jeeweej #4 8 months ago

    KOTOR 1 was a brilliant game indeed, still play it from time to time on my classic Xbox. Its a shame KOTOR2 was such a rushjob, so much potential but such a crappy ending. :(

    Looking forward to SWTOR though! :)
  • CheesecakeBobby #5 8 months ago

    It has been 80% off multiple times.
  • bad09 #6 8 months ago

    @Stuz359

    If think KOTOR2 is the bugfest not 1. Certainly I didn't encounter any bugs in my recent playthrough of 1.

    crappy MMO

    How do you know it's crappy? When did you last play it? You'd be surprised at how "Bioware" SWTOR actually is. I'm not about to go singing it's praises but the least you could do is give it a chance before you turn your nose up. You never know, you might even like it ;)

    That said, I understand some folk have an automatic dislike of all things MMO. I'm not thrilled with the idea of sharring my KOTOR with the WOW populace but I am excited to be able to play with close friends and family. I think that will out weigh my growning ignore list :D The sub fee is a non issue for me. I spend more on less every day.

    KOTOR was an awesome game - the story was way better than George Lucas' more recent efforts...

    You said it yourself some of us just don't like, or are in any way interested in, MMOs. KOTOR is one of my favourite single player RPGs and they killed the series dead. It's crappy. :(
  • revan8 #10 8 months ago

    One of fav games of all time. Hence the name
  • Seoh #11 8 months ago

    Worth noting is that the Steam version needs to be hacked to play correctly on modern high resolution systems, full instructions below

    Once you do this it works a treat, although the cut-scenes are still quite low rez, one of my all time favourite games.
  • Umang #12 8 months ago

    Bought it for less during the summer sale... Great game though!

    Star Wars: KotOR really is an outstanding game, though I seem to recall having problems getting it work properly without crashing when I had my ATI HD 5870 CrossFireX setup. I haven't installed it since switching to a GTX 580 though but I seem to remember it played fine when I my GTX 280. This is definitely a game that I'd love to see an 'HD' remaster of with improved textures, models and cutscenes.

    @bad09

    Fair enough. I'll never fully understand why but each to their own. I like both singleplayer and MMO RPGs so it's alive and well for me. At least until I've played enough to properly judge it. It may yet turn out to be crappy. My short time spent with it was surprisingly positive though and rekindled my interest.

    Mass Effect fills the sci-fi singleplayer Bioware RPG slot nicely.
  • jetsetwillie #15 8 months ago

    i played through it pretty recently. took me weeks to get through the starting area... it was so boring. but was pleased i did as really gets good later on.

    shame there is no support for widescreen resolutions as everyone looks short and fat.
  • Moribundman #16 8 months ago

    Ooooh yes please. Can I add a second credit card to my Steam account? I spunked all my money away while stranded in Vermont by hurricane Irene and don't get paid until next week.

    This also meant I missed out on the TF2 birthday gifts :-(

    It's incredibly simple really so I don't why you don't understand, not everyone wants to play games with others online and don't want a game to turn into a monthly outgoing just to play.

    @ Moribundman
    Just change the payment details, you can use different cards.

    I loved KOTOR. It may well be my favourite game. I'm bloody tempted to give it yet another play through.
  • bad09 #20 8 months ago

    Get in! Speaking of KOTOR Mrs bad09 literally just came in with a present for me, KOTOR2 \o/
  • Shikasama #21 8 months ago

    Do it Rob, then walk arround the office at EG towers with a mask on and telling them that you are not Robert Prucheese, but in fact...... DARTH REVAN
  • Subquest #22 8 months ago

    @jetsetwillie - shame also that you only post a comment rather than read those that come before you. In most cases it's possible to force a widescreen resolution, follow the link that was kindly offered above.

    @Bertie:

    Gonna get out my 4-discs and install this w/end.

    Awesome game, KOTOR.

    Oddly, my Sith Lords is still in its shrink wrap from like 4 years ago. I wish people would say something nice about it so I could go play it!
  • jeeweej #24 8 months ago

    @vijay_UK PLAY IT! Trust me, KOTOR 2 is definately worth your time, it might be a bit buggy (even though on Xbox its seems ok..ish.. to me) and the ending might be a bit "meh", but everything in between is (in my opinion) just as awesome as the original KOTOR.

    Hell, if Obsidian was given more time i think it might have become even better than the original!

    So try it, you wont be dissapointed! :)
  • bad09 #25 8 months ago

    @vijay_UK

    Do it (after KOTOR1 of course), don't forget to download the restoration mod, I just downloaded it apparently it completes the game as much as possible and it supposedly is a lot closer to Obsidians vision of the finished game.

    It's good! It's like Planescape Torment meets Star Wars, in a good way. Yes the end is annoyingly cut and there are bugs, but it still has the story, the characters, the voice acting and some nice gameplay additions going for it, it's also a bit more thoughtful and thematically darker.

    I recently tried playing it on a mates xbox but it looked to much like arse to really get into it. Modern graphics have really spoilt my eyes.
  • Darren #29 8 months ago

    @jetsetwillie - I played the game in widescreen on my PC three years ago... ;)

    Check out this link: [link url=http://widescreengamingforum.com/dr/star-wars-knights-old-republic

    That explains how to edit the game so that widescreen works.

    negged for asking a queston.. hmm, ok :)

    I do wonder why there is a news article about this when Steam has offers on all the time and I cant recall seeing a story on the fron page of EG for any of them.

    There is no doubt that KOTOR was/is a fantastic game. :)

    Yeah Mrs bad09 is very cool. She does that from time to time I'll eye up a game, mention it in passing or in a shop, boom shes gets it! I've never been with a woman so patient and understanding about gaming to be honest but then she is a bit of a gamer herself.
