iPad 3 launch early 2012 - report

Suppliers supposedly spill beans.

Apple will ramp up iPad 3 production from October with an eye to an early 2012 launch, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"Suppliers will ramp up production and try to improve the yield rate for the new iPad in the fourth quarter before its official launch in early 2012," a source at a iPad component supplier told WSJ.

Apple and iPad assembly company Hon Hai Precision Industry declined to comment when approached by WSJ.

The new iPad is expected to boost its display resolution up to 2048 x 1536. Apple's suppliers have apparently already shipped small quantities of components for sampling iPad 3. The orders detail a 9.7-inch screen device.

Could we just have a little more care in the report - I don't hold in my head the current resolution or the current screen size, which would be good for comparison purposes.

i hope its delayed as long as possible so i get more value out of the ipad2 !
I would be amazed if they can double the resolution so quickly , would have thought that would be prohibitively expensive?
  • dr_zoidthrob #7 9 months ago

I would've thought a tag-team combo of price and battery requirements would be a massive issue (the screen effectively has 4x the pixels after all)

All that and it still won't come with any expansion slots (that would knacker the Apple Tax)

iPad 3 to go on sale roughly a year after iPad 2 went on sale? Excuse me, I must just sit down for a second. The sheer mindblowing magnificence of this revelation has left me literally staggered.

    /sarcasm.

Current iPad 2 is 1024X768 at 9.7 inches. Same as iPad 1. However, the iPad 2 sports a significantly upgraded GPU which is much more powerful than Tegra 2 and would probably be current enough for the next one.

Tegra 3, on the other hand (the system-on-a-chip featured in the next gen Android tablets) might shift the balance of power in conjunction with a much more complete OS.

    @hilts

There was that thing about some guy, supposedly from Apple, saying, off the record no less, that the iPad 2 was a stop gap and that the real research was going straight into the iPad 3. Which if true means the iPad 2 is essentially just an iPad slim and that the iPad 3 will be a proper upgrade. Still it was a bit of a vague source in the article I read.

Still the iPad 2 was released a little while ago now and I've literally only just managed to get one because it has been out of stock everywhere near me, so even if the iPad 3 is released early next year it'll probably be a while before you see one on a bus journey. Does still sting a little that my birthday present will feel obsolete before my next birthday even arrives.

Oh and iPad 2 screen specs
9.7″ LED display with 1024×768 screen resolution at 132ppi
So it seems that it'll be the same again, probably thinner and surely fucking beautiful to look at.

Well, got my iPad 2 last April and March 2012 sounds pretty good for launching the next one. Let's hope that this time there's some real competition. I would hate to wait in line again for the only tablet that made any sense to own.

I'd love to get a non-Apple model as my next tablet, I really hate the irrational demand and inevitable shortages that come with Apple products. Here's hoping for Transformer 2.

Oh, and guys, let's not exaggerate. Depending on what you use them for, older tablets are still not obsolete. Just not top of the line anymore.

It makes no sense to double the resolution for a 10' device unless - you use it for 3D images. Is ipad 3 gonna have glasses free 3D then? I guess it will.

  • Tiiti #22 9 months ago

Simples, if you already own an iPad 2.

Sell iPad 2 when iPad 3 comes along for £150-£200 less than you bought it for.

Buy iPad 3 for the same price as you bought the iPad 2 for.

    iPad 3 cost £150-200

At least that is how the iPad 1 to iPad 2 worked anyway... It's all about getting on the Apple train at first.

Since some uninformed morons are shunning the 3DS because their convinced it'll burn their retinas out and 3DTV sales being a bit crap ATM, then will Apple embrace 3D? And if so, will 3D suddenly become awesome because Apple's done it?

I rather doubt you can get it for the same price as an iPad 2 if the rumours of a 2048x1536 screen is true. Similar resolution IPS monitors cost 600-900 €, and that's before they have to shrink the whole thing down to 9.7". Not to mention you need four times the VRAM and four times the GPU-power of the iPad 2 just to achieve the same speed, not to mention a speed increase. Expensive stuff and rather more demand in less time than Moore's Law suggests is available 2012.

Also I guess you must be oblivious to their stupidity in the German and Dutch courts over their fear of the Samsung's Galaxy pad. A tablet computer is rectangular with rounded corners and has a grid of icons. Fuck me Apple copyrighted the completely fucking obvious or more likely stole it as usual.
  • StooMonster #35 9 months ago

Eisenstein: I rather doubt you can get it for the same price as an iPad 2 if the rumours of a 2048x1536 screen is true.

iPhone 4 quadrupled the resolution of previous iPhones in the same way, and it cost the same as previous generations; so I don't see why it wouldn't cost the same, especially as Apple are bound to put huge pressure on their supplier, but they have lots of margin to work with too.

LG have already demoed the screens in public, and the CEO said they were being used in iPad 3. I think it'd pretty certain they are coming, but you are right about the extra processing power and memory required. Will be interesting to see what happens ... if iPad 3 is this spec, it makes current "HD" consoles look very underpowered indeed.

That resolution is overkill and could be a significant drain on resources. I think 1440x900 should be enough for that size screen, unless Apple wants to push iPad as a desktop publishing and graphics tool. I personally sold my iPad 2 as between my android phone and macbook I couldn't find any time/use for it

"The new iPad is expected to boost its display resolution up to 2048 x 1536."

    Says who? Who expects this?

I'm not convinced; it would require 4 times the video memory/power. Not sure they'd be able to keep onto a 10 hour battery life that way.

"iPhone 4 quadrupled the resolution of previous iPhones in the same way, and it cost the same as previous generations; so I don't see why it wouldn't cost the same, especially as Apple are bound to put huge pressure on their supplier, but they have lots of margin to work with too."

The iPhone 3 had 320x480 resolution. It was A LOT easier to quadruple that within the confines of current semi-affordable technology, than it would be to quadruple 768x1024.

I'm looking forward a lot to a higher-def iPad, especially for Zinio, but I'm not sure it will happen in 2012.

It'll be certainly interesting to see what improvements are made for the iPad 3, though i've only just got the second one with apple care so i'll be skipping the 3. As someone who can't actually see the screen, wouldn't the increase in resolution make everything smaller? I thought the iPad is appreciated because of it's readability.

Its not good for Nintendo really when some people think that 3D leads to migranes and vision damage in all who watch it. Some people can't watch 3D, fortunately for me I can. However some idiots are too terrified to give it a try. Add a warning on the front of the 3DS box that says kids under 6 shouldn't play in 3D and those paranoid parents will just get hysterical if little Tommy even dares ask for one. Ninty need to better inform people that you can turn the 3D off, which lots of people apparantly don't know you can do.

It doesn't help when bog roll like the Sun say that they reduced the price of the 3DS because its causing eye strain and headaches either. You'd think that adults would be able to actually look into it a bit more, but there's no shortage of idiots I see.

Apple making a 3D iPad would also go a long way to helping push 3D as the future, not as a pain inducing gimmick that some people think. If people can't see 3D, fair enough, but don't whine at those of us that can.

Practically everything will stay the same size - certainly the Apple stuff- but will be crisper due to the 4x density, ala the jump from 3GS to IV. That is, presuming they stick to 9.7". Could give app makers a few more options with that many pixels though and I guarantee a few apps will appear with stupidly small fonts or UI - iPhone Puzzle Quest I'm looking at you.

Still skeptical 4x res is happening next year though.

Some of the comments here boggle my mind. People complaining Apple charge 30% from developers to make apps. Well it's much the same as ALL the console manufacturers who charge a licensing fee really, isn't it, hardly a revelation or some wicked ploy by Apple. Thing is how many developers have made a good business for themselves from the App store. If it was that bad a deal surely no one would be sticking with it. Get off your anti-Apple high horses.

Also, anyone who pays attention will know Apple often up the game quite dramatically with their hardware and as far as iOS devices go they always come in at the same price or cheaper than the previous version. It's well known they do it yearly for most devices so to be surprised or disappointed is your own fault. Thing is they innovate, bring a better device to market for the same price again, what's not to like about that?!

Also, the upped resolution is a big deal and will be very impressive. Anyone who went from an older iPhone to an iPhone 4 will understand. The screen sharpness is simply unbelievable, and while lesser resolutions are perfectly serviceable, once you've used a 'retina' type display it's hard going back to blocky fuzzy screens ever again. I for one look forward to the iPad 3, I may just get one if I ever have any money!

  • smelly #62 9 months ago

    >People complaining Apple charge 30% from developers to make apps

I'll add to what you said, rather correctly - by also adding that the 30% also covers:

    1) credit card processing fees
    2) apple paying the sales tax for you (up to 20% in uk!)
    3) hosting/download fees.

As someone who has hosted software on a website, and had to pay credit card fees/international sales taxes/etc... I can certainly gaurantee that 30% isnt that bad at all!

I used to pay something like 15% to the credit card companies... and thats BEFORE i had to pay for the downloading bandwidth, etc.
  • WJF #63 9 months ago

I'd just like to stick up for UncleLou here, as he seems to be getting a lot of unwarranted stick.

Fact is, any Apple post on EG does bring out the usual crowd (whether that be regs or just the same old comments thrown by newcomers) that are often relevant only if you enclose it in a vacuum.

Either it's the old 'closed platform' (xbox, ps3, and Android says 'hi'), the yearly refresh (HTC and Samsung say 'next month's model is better'), or evil practices (every major global corporation says 'you can't touch us in court; we can afford the best lawyers). It's kind of getting old.

I'm not saying Apple hardware is for everyone (heck, I use a netbook mainly - iPad still doesn't doit for me when working on the move), but I can certainly empathise with some of the frustrations being expressed by content iPad owners.

"Apple charge 30% from developers to make apps. Well it's much the same as ALL the console manufacturers who charge a licensing fee really, isn't it, hardly a revelation or some wicked ploy by Apple."

Don't forget those evil fuckers in bricks-and-mortar shops who dare to take about 40% (for everything you buy, not just videogames), either, just for providing you with a convenient service. Apple's 30% cut for managing the App Store, providing all the bandwidth etc doesn't seem out of line with any other kind of business to me, speaking as someone who sells apps there.

There are plenty of reasons to hate Apple (not least that their obsessive secrecy spawns endless pointless speculation pieces like this one), just not the ones trotted out by the infinitely tedious anti-fanboys who always infest these threads.

I'd rather not compare a phone to a classic painting, but what the hell: I suspect the argument goes that if you take the Mona Lisa, rescale it in photoshop, it's still the Mona Lisa. How would you present this to a jury? You'd rescale the offending scaled copy to the proportions of the painting you're defending, to put the shape and picture back into it's correct context.

In other words, it's not about dimensions of the picture, but the form. And form is what Apple are protecting - that's their implied copyright. Doesn't mean they're right, just means they believe they're right - the fact of it is for a judge/jury to decide, and the reliability of judges and juries is a whole other topic...

Early 2012 (mar/apr) would just match up with a yearly update, right?

I guess they've finally caught up with supply and demand so it's not unreasonable.
