Space Marine will have co-op

Details soon.

Upcoming third-person action game Space Marine will have co-op, THQ has confirmed.

A THQ community manager wrote on the game's official forum that co-op will be added 30 days after launch and will be free to those who bought new copies of the game. The post has since been removed.

"Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine will have co-op," THQ told Joystiq. "We are looking forward to announcing more details later this month!"

As Co-Optimus reports, US video game shop mentioned "5-player co-op: Bonus FREE game mode (Day 30 DLC)" last week.

The news also suggests Space Marine will support THQ's Online Pass system.

Not sure if co-op can still be classified a 'new' trend, but I actually am partially interested in the title, despite not being a Warhammer or Games Workshop fan (nothing against them, just passed me by).

    Will wait for reviews.

Wait, Space Marine is a 15 rated game? Isn't that going to eliminate a large portion of their target market from getting it?

JUST TAKE MY FUCKING MONEY ALREADY.

    Please.

CODS are 18 and that doesn't stop a bajillion people from buying them every year.

i want this game. i need this game to be good. But unless its a 1/10 stinker, and relic don't make a stinker, its getting bought no matter the score

@jonbwfc - They've struggled with that since the 80s. What they have is a _really_ dark universe/story (for example their whole concept of warp space is basically Event Horizon), but an audience comprised primarily of 12-year-old boys. The other problem is that a lot of the art design is based on what could be moulded cheaply using plastic 20 years ago - the really gothic stuff from the books and magazines has kind of been toned down recently in favour of these clean-cut primary-coloured marines.

So we've ended up with this weird dissonance between the awesomeness that 40k is in the fiction and original materials, and the slightly kiddy-friendly marketable version. Relic seem to sit on the middle of this fence, and as much as I like them, and realise that Games Workshop have them on a tight leash, I think it's a real shame.

I think jonbwfc's point was that Warhammer is seen as a predominately early-teen activity.
There are a lot of teens who play, but also lot of adults too, and if you ever read any of the fiction, it is extremely gory, bloody and violent. from reading several of the novels, I'm surprised they haven't got a higher rating.

    edit: What he said^

Why? Everyone knows Warhammer kids have no mates.

Day 30 DLC? I was interested in this game for the co-op aspect alone as the single player looks a bit generic from the videos I've seen. Adding co-op after launch means I won't be pre-ordering but will wait and see what the co-op is like before before committing.
  • -cerberus- #13 10 months ago

Yes, because the title itself wasn't generic enough!

5 player co-op? Oh those poor Orks.
  • RandomTerrain #15 10 months ago

This game is sounding better & better by the minute. Sounds like great fun.

Still cant believe they called it Space Marine :/ silly name
  • Kikizosan #17 10 months ago

5-player suggests some kind of 'Horde' mode, not co-op campaign. Not of interest to me personally, but I'm still looking forward to this one. Hope it turns out decent.

Unfortunately for them, 30 days after the game comes out, Gears of War 3 will have been out for two weeks and the vast majority of the people looking to play a co-op shooter will be there already.

Before any fans neg me, I'd just like to state that I'm looking forward to Space Marine more than Gears 3, my pre-order is in and everything, but I've always worried that its proximity to Gears 3 would hurt it commercially (at least it's coming out before and not after).

This isn't really news, it was confirmed a year ago with the first previews.

Im 23 and only stopped with Warhammer 40k a few years back but only due to a lack of time from work and other commitments. The lack of friends for anyone that does it is total crap btw, i personally found it to be a good hobby (if not a tad expensive) and the whole universe and stories behind it all are fantastic as noted in previous comments.

It's not to everyones taste but then again, what is?
  • tankboi #21 10 months ago

a five man Space Marine squad?? I think I just geeked in my pants...

Please let different classes be available within the group...shotgun the jetpack! :)
  • Roamer #22 10 months ago

The big question is whether there will be an offline mode or not. Co-op is sort of useless online.
  • gav082 #23 10 months ago

So you cant play co op on the day of release? Think I'll be getting dead island with my friends then
  • tankboi #24 10 months ago

    @Roamer.

How do you play 5 player co-op over the internet in offline mode?
