Microsoft registers Microsoft-Sony.com

UPDATE: Microsoft explains itself.

UPDATE: Move along, nothing to see here. According to a Tweet from Microsoft corporate communications VP Frank Shaw the listing is just an innocuous "defensive domain name hold".

ORIGINAL STORY: Microsoft has registered the domains Microsoft-Sony.com and Sony-Microsoft.com.

Both domains were registered this month. But why?

Perhaps a one console future is about to become a reality? Would you buy a XboxStation or a PlayBox?

Or maybe Microsoft has bought Sony, or Sony has bought Microsoft.

Or Nintendo has bought them both, and decided to merge them into one gargantuan company. One can only hope.

Some have speculated that Microsoft may be readying some kind of comparison marketing campaign along the lines of Apple's Mitchell and Webb-fuelled "Get a Mac" campaign from a few years ago.

Microsoft and Sony are both far bigger companies than just the Xbox and Playstation divisions. If this is any kind of partnership between the two, it almost certainly isn't game related.

Or someone at MS thought it would be hilariously funny to throw a few dollars at a domain name registration and have all the journalists and gamers speculate and guess at what it could be.

Sony computers already run Windows. 360 2 scheduled to run Windows 9.

    Everyone using an AMD processor.

    MS using Cell.

Sony calls PSN hack "a learning experience."

Sony to offer "Kinect-like" experience with PS4.

    IT ALL MAKES SENSE.

I can see Sony ditching their console OS for PS4 and utilising a customised version of Windows - paying MS a small fee per unit. Either that or a Sony Windows Phone (most likely)

They're going to raise themselves on legs, combine into MicroSonyMegarobo and battle with UltraNintendZorg to claim dominion over the gaming industry. Millions will die.

After the abject failure of the playstation 3 and with it the absolute tarnishing of the PS brand beyond repair, maybe Sony will sell off their home console devision who knows?
Doubtful probably advertising campaign showing how the 360 can still surpass ps3 in almost every department with the outlandish claims made by Sony about ps3 power , running in the background

Why do I have the feeling that it will be a PayBox.
Well there is some crazy talk going on like how win8 will support xbox360 games and now this.
Maybe M$ tries to be the sole ruler of the gaming industry by combining the two big consoles and maybe even pc somehow.(don't ask me how)
    Anyway it's just idiotic speculation.
  • EugenesLair #32 10 months ago

Could it be something as simple as MS trying to avoid anyone using that domain? (for any dodgy marketing tactics).
  • Vistrix #33 10 months ago

Its most likely something to do with PCs and nothing to do with consoles.

Microsoft uses Sony laptops in their commercials etc.
  • arcam #34 10 months ago

Somehow I suspect if MS and Sony were merging, registering this crappy domain name would not be the way they reveal it to the world :/

Much more likely is they've just bought up a ton of MS related domain names to stop spammers/phishers sending email from them. Not very exciting, sorry.
  • flaming.carrot #35 10 months ago

Microsoft won't ever buy Sony - but Apple might try at some point. Steve Jobs has long been a fan and based Apple on Sony's business model in the early years.

Obviously Microsoft have been inspired by recent horror films and are lining up their offering : Console Centipede (The Wii is the one in the middle).
  • EugenesLair #39 10 months ago

    @jonfon lol! ... ok, I'll give it a shot.

If there's any kind of partnership between them two, it'll probably be to face competition from Apple.

Although if I were Nintendo, I would start to worry about now. Also I would feel a little lonely they left me out of the domain's name ;)

What are people on here smoking? Just because Microsoft registers two domains it means they are going into a merger?

It is likely that they won't be using the domains for anything and it is a speculative purchase so they weren't taken by a 14 year old and redirected to Nintendo's website. Or something.
  • TechnicPuppet #50 10 months ago

No way its that it costs £7.99 or something to register a domain name. You trying to tell me they would waste £16?

Hmm Sony-Ericsson struggling, could they be buying out Ericsson?

    http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/sony-...
  • vizzini #52 10 months ago

Microsoft have no doubt just bought out the Ericsson side of the Sony-Ericsson.com business or planning to.
Especially if Nokia's board went through with ousting their head guy (an ex-microsoft man) who announced migrating all future Nokia phones to Windows Mobile, which much of the board didn't support.

Or possibly a second opportunity to buy a larger slice of mobile market; if all Nokia and SE phones then became Windows only giving them a bigger launch platform for Window 8 Mobile which sounds more plausible imo.

Interestingly would it then mean that Windows OS phones would be getting Playstation Suite certified.

Sony's total shares are worth around $26b and MS has $50b in cash. So if they could get their hands on the shares then they could buy them. Highly unlikely though as I have said.

""A one console future"...if only that were true!

I'll pray that it doesn't come true, competition keeps the big three on their toes and prices down."

Yes, because having multiple hardware formats is really great for consumers, developers and publishers...It's retail competition and market saturation that keep prices down for consumers, that's why DVD's (that I can play on any DVD player) are so cheap these days.

I could understand if having different hardware formats lead to wildly varying innovation, but that simply isn't the case any more (was it ever?)

  • RexRunti #69 10 months ago

To be honest I thought MSs long term goal was to get DirectX into other manufacturers machines (DirectX is why the X in X-box comes from). MS software on Sony hardware sounds pretty cool to me.

In all seriousness this is probably a phone tie up though (the Nokia thing doesn't stop there HTC relations). (Though this would also be quite big news, just not in the gaming space.)

PS @General_Ironfist i'm not sure this will get through the tin-foil hat your wearing but MS spends more on R&D than Sony, both as a percentage of revenue and in raw numbers http://gizmodo.com/5486798/research-and-...

Microsoft have took this generation forward in tech terms on line, achievements, cross game chat,KINECT, xbla , with the first xbx they saw the web revolution coming to consoles and how important it would be this generation.
With Sony it seems online was an after thought and id hardly call the ps3 "s piss- poor architecture a step forward, BR also seems like it was a big mistake and poor foresight by Sony"s "amazing" r+d department, , this dept has ruined the playstation brand in less than 5 years, amamzing.....

And for all the hopes of a one console future... How boring do you want the future to be?

I want it so boring where I only have to purchase one console and get all the games I care about. I would like it so boring that with both MS and Sony pockets we see a true next gen console where both companies can split the cost thus the impact will be less and we get more console per money spent. I also would like it so that both companies join in on spending more money on those indie projects and continue to give us great games at a decent price.

Oh well, I am sure like will not get that boring anytime soon but a man can wish.
  • TechnicPuppet #96 10 months ago

Interesting that people believe that Apple will enter the gaming market. I do not believe they will. Yes, Apple TV will be able to do games just like the Iphone and Pad but thats only because they have an OS where you can create apps. Games has never interested Apple. Even today developers that program for the Macs complain about how Apple just do not care.

So gaming from Apple will be the same as it is on the Iphone, Pad ect. The only difference is that Apple will be playing with the big boys thinking the same disinterested strategy will work on the HD sets.

If it's not phone related it could be IPTV related. MS have been in this area for yonks but have never been able to grab the consumer with it (a bit like tablet PCs) so a new push with Sony might make all the difference before Apple "invent" it.

Before I read all the comments, I should point out that monopoly positions are good for nobody - the consumer suffers, the monopolistic company's position is eroded as the consumers move on to alternative forms of entertainment or whatever industry the monopoly occurs in.

Of course this economic theory has sod all basis when you're talking about staples that consumers need, whether it is food, fuel or bloody useless rail companies that run a 4 car train in to London Bridge at peak time. (A bit of a vent there :)

@General_SonyFist - So you can name 4 or 5 things big that Sony have done in 40 years!

Did you bother to look at the research MS have done / are doing before you say "if you knew anything about technology/innovation and had the ability to look beyond the short-term (like I can and do). You'd see that Sony are the superior company."

Here are a couple of things that may not mean anything to you directly, but I think are more important to humanity than anything Sony have done:

Microsoft Collaborates With Leading Doctors and Scientists, Using Advanced Machine-Learning Techniques to Optimize HIV Vaccines

    [link url=http://digital-medicine.blogspot.com/2011/03/automatic-analysis-of-medical-images.html
    ]http://digital-medicine.blogspot.com/201...[/link]

Part of the reason you may have seen more things from Sony is that Sony's research is purely to develop new products, whereas a lot of MS's research is there for.... research. Even if they do not come up with a product, they come up with a hell of a lot of theories and algorithms as well as supporting the research of universities, institutes and other companies.

of them were bought by a multi-national news consortium and they are going to waist billions trying to snuff out nintendo because the little n won't sell out.

Hopefully this means what we all hope it means. Please God.
  • matpsp #116 10 months ago

This is just a bullshit story, and the comments are all based on conjecture. Ridiculous.
  • Corinthian7 #117 10 months ago

Why does this have to be console related? Maybe Microsoft have tied up a deal with Sony to recommend Vaio as there prefered choice to run Windows 8 or Sony Ericsson might be about to support Windows Mobile 7. A Sony- Microsoft console collaboration in intriguing but I don't know, I kind of like owning both consoles and I think the competition is healthier. I wouldn't mind seeing cross platform online gaming though,
  • mumblyjoe #118 10 months ago

Can't see Sony being OK with this....
  • Tiberius_Gracchus #119 10 months ago

    After all that...
  • kinth #120 10 months ago

i dont get how its a defensive somain name hold :S why would either sony or microsoft try to register those domains?
the only person they would be defending from is sony but why would sony want to register that name either.

i think its a bullshit cover up and im going to go put my tin foil hat on! :)

    @General_Ironfist

    You really are an asshole.

PS This fucktard sent me 7 yes 7 PM's banging on about how gay he was because I posted a sarcastic comment asking some fool if he thought about dick.
So, not only is he an asshole but he's remarkably unhinged as well.

It would be a sweet idea, but can't see this happening too many problems would occur, which controller style would the Playbox go for? Would you earn Achievements or Trophies? Game pricing etc etc...

    We can always dream though...
  • KayJay #123 10 months ago

    Hold on.
How come this has been pumped to the top of the news section after an update and the tripe that was purchase yesterday stayed where it was.

    Wtf.
  • Harmonica #124 10 months ago

Fun fact: if any of us little-people tried the same move we'd get done for domain squatting. Does not apply if you're one of the biggest companies in the world (cf. Apple and the itunes.co.uk fiasco).
  • DrStrangelove #125 10 months ago

I hope some Sony official won't miss this excellent opportunity for making a nice sarcastic comment.
  • TheRealBadabing #126 10 months ago

The Playbox is obviously inferior to the XboxStation in every way. It's about time you playbots stopped trolling.

    Also, EG bias.
  • anomagnus #127 10 months ago

I don't think it simpossible. A sony/MS console makes sense. Developers will love it, we'll not have to spread our cash, development times should be smaller because theres only one platform, and they could drive stake through nintendo. Everyone is a winner.
  • actionfitz #128 10 months ago

"Perhaps a one console future is about to become a reality?"

i's settle for a 'single standard' like dvd players or PCs: lots of different makers with slightly different features, but they all play the same media...
that would be awesome. could still buy a MS or Sony machine - based on aesthetics, but my games could play in either one... oh and they'd allow us to upgrade hard drives etc with cheap standard pc components...

...and monkeys might fly out of my arse.
  • mousearmyone #129 10 months ago

"Defensive domain name hold"? I thought when other people did it, it was called cybersquatting.
  • ToAks #130 10 months ago

    @firemonkey

    are you serious?

do you belive that sony's huge r&D division has only done thoose 4 -5 things in 40 years?

Ever heard of LED,OLED,CMOS,3D Projectory,Lossless,3D Scanners,3DMedical monitors,3D medical cameras oh and yes...theyre all massively used in the medical sector and save people every day :)
also you can look up what STC is aswell as have a look at their website about r&d achivements.
without Siemens or SONY we can't be ,thoose are the biggest guys in the medical sectors, software side is diffrent as there is more companies with epertise although they develop for siemens and sony etc.
  • weebl #131 10 months ago

    @TechnicPuppet

Without wishing to jump to the aid of a complete moron, I felt I had to set you straight on some things:

UMD: was a cheaper data media than flash memory when it was designed. What's the problem with that?
Betamax: was technically far superior to VHS, but admittedly Sony didn't licence it in the right way and that lead to its downfall.
Minidisc: aside from DAT, was the first data storage format for music that could be rewritten thousands of times. It was popular in Japan for ages, but we saw it just a few years before the iPod came out and cleaned up.
Move: this is a more precise controller for determining its position in 3D space than the Kinect is, but people tend to think that it is exactly the same sort of controller. Playing Tumble with Kinect would be impossible.

To be honest if I was to pick holes with everything that Microsoft has done over its lifespan I'd be here forever. What it doesn't write that isn't bloated or broken it buys / steals from other companies, most notably Java from Sun Microsystems.
  • MrVengeance #132 10 months ago

Would make good business sense to share R&D, manufacturing and design costs. Both the 360 and PS3 are so similar it wouldn't make that much difference to gamers - would mean they wouldn't have to shell out for two similar systems....
  • Number1Laing #133 10 months ago

Would make good business sense to share R&D, manufacturing and design costs.

And it's something they have to be very careful about, as there is such a thing as anti-trust laws on the books.
  • Darksjeik #134 10 months ago

I wouldn't be at all surprised if a Microsoft-Sony merger would be to counter a google or apple console release. Maybe MS and Sony know something we don't.
  • hiscore #135 10 months ago

    1. MS registering said domain name without consulting Sony is unlikely
    2. MS and Sony ran out of ideas for future gen and are reading YOUR reactions at this moment to get some genuine inspiration
    3. Nintendo is researching the next dimension to register the 'MICROSONDO 4D' (which, as a pre-order exclusive, can teleport you to Mars... via their online shop)
  • kangarootoo #136 10 months ago

So going by the article update, prompted by the BF3 / MW website story? A "lets register URLs that pesky fans might use to create FUD, to prevent said mischief" approach?
  • Spekingur #137 10 months ago

The One Console was forged in the fires of an active volcano...
