I was intrigued by the shots of clandestine meetings on quiet streets and derelict theme parks, and then were just endless shots of giant monsters being shot with big guns and my hopes of them actually managing to make this suspenseful and mysterious like the theme demands were shattered.

Looks alright, I like the setting but is there room for another run of the mill MMO?

About the MMO immersion thing, I've found playing EQ 10+ years ago and more recently WoW, you get a weird kind of meta-immersion. Most people play along with the lore and stuff, but are also playing it as a game so to speak. I used to come across more people that were up for full on RP back in Everquest, but I think those days are mostly gone now, in mainstream MMOs anyway. I guess it's what you make of it, if you start RPing in a group people will sometimes join in or find it cool. It was never really my cup of tea, but I would usually join in if someone else was doing it. I guess you just have to put up with younger players in general chat shouting stuff like "YUOR A BIG GAY WTB YUOR MOM!1".

I suppose it depends on the MMO you're playing. In LOTRO, there seems to be a lot of RP going on, even on the non-RP servers, but in other games like AoC, it's more like an immature chatroom. Usually I minimise the chat window and get on with playing the game.
