PC Race Driver: Grid online MP revived

Race Driver: Grid online multiplayer has been resurrected on PC by Australian service GameRanger.

Codemasters confirmed that the plug had been pulled on the PC and PS3 mutiplayer servers last week.

The Xbox 360 servers were unaffected and live on.

GameRanger is a multiplayer platform for PC that offers profiles, friends lists, instant messaging, voice chat and rankings/leaderboards/ratings. To use it, you'll need to download the free GameRanger application.

How can GameRanger do this?

"Grid still has LAN play. GameRanger is able to trick Grid into using the LAN play over the internet so that it can continue to provide multiplayer lobbies for it (all automated)," GameRanger's Scott Kevill explained to Eurogamer.

"The tech I've created allows games to be added without needing any code changes."

Kevill said it "may" be possible for Codemasters to update the PC version of Grid to use GameRanger matchmaking officially, which would make the implementation "smoother".

"But I'm guessing it might be difficult for them to do another update so long after the release," he said.

GameRanger claims to have provided "new homes" for many other "orphaned" multiplayer games, including Need for Speed: Most Wanted and The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth.
