Valve to attend gamescom

DOTA 2? Portal 2 DLC? Half-Life 3?

After a no-show at E3 last week, Portal 2 maker Valve has confirmed it will present at August's show gamescom.

Valve joins Capcom and Sega on the list of attendees, according to a Go Nintendo report.

But what, exactly, will Valve present?

More information on DOTA 2, Valve's only currently confirmed project, is widely anticipated.

DOTA is a custom scenario built for Warcraft III using the game's world editor. The idea is to destroy the opposing teams' Ancient boss using a squad of hero units, which can be levelled up and decked out in better gear throughout the course of the battle.

Valve's gamescom presence may, however, feature an announcement regarding downloadable content for superb first-person puzzler Portal 2.

And then, whisper it, there's always Half-Life 3.

gamescom runs from 17th to 21st August.

There's also more L4D2 dlc expected.

I've wanted to go to gamescom for a while, but the cost of flights from my part of the world make it more than a whim.

Though let's face it, no, no there is't. :p

Portal 2 DLC!...Just mentioned it in the thread, a level editor for the consoles would be sugary goodness on top of an already pretty much perfect pie!

It's a shame that HL related projects are becoming a joke in the industry, especially when Portal 2 was the only really GREAT thing that Valve released ever since The Orange Box, which by itself was a compilation with the exception of TF2 and Portal. I dig L4D, but it's not exactly HL2, is it...?!

If I were Valve I'd just quietly upload HL3 to Steam one day- no announcement, no previews.
  • ucankurbaga #6 11 months ago

How about putting date of gamescom in article?

I'm not raising my hopes that EP 3 will be shown, I've been let down so many times before.

/raises hopes EP 3 will be shown.

Half Life 2 Episode 3 would be nice before we get HL3

You guys haven't played EP3 yet? But it's the best one!
  • Caimbeul #13 11 months ago

Valve + Half-Life Ep3 or Even 3 = Bad Joke. Its not going to happen is it. I am would be happy to be proven wrong. Unless that is they announce that they are now just starting work on it!
  • Smudge1983 #14 11 months ago

What is this Half Life you all speak of. No really of Valve want to take thier time with HLep3/HL3 then so be it, just please dont follow in Dukes footsteps. If its an annocement for some L4D dlc or Portal then let the good times roll. I personally think it will be a new Team Fortress game announcement.

More than likely Portal 2 DLC I think, but wouldn't HL3 be brilliant.

L4D3. If you're still waiting for Episode 3, stop. It won't come out. Newell said in almost every possible way that it was cancelled except straight out saying it's cancelled. The episodic model didn't work out for them, they were actually disappointed by the Orange Box sales (crazy high expectations on their side). So next HL will be Half-Life 3. I have no idea why Gabe doesn't simply admit that Episode 3 is no more, maybe he fears how the community will react and wants to blow them away with HL 3 before acknowledging that this is it.

We only know that despite being in development since 2008 Episode 3/Half-Life 3 is not just around the corner (of course Valve were burnt by the HL2 delay, so they won't come out with it until it is like two months away from release). First they put all their people on L4D to get that out, after the huge success they had to do L4D2 and then Portal 2. Now they are supposedly working full time on HL 3. Valve is not big enough to work on multiple new games at the same time.

    @Smudge:

Yeah, to be honest I didn't originally hold out much hope for Ep3 being that great. But when I played through Portal 2, it really re-affirmed to me that Valve really know what they're doing with characters and setting. So I'm willing to give them time on it to get it right.

Personally I'm interested in the DOTA 2 stuff. Their chief challenge outside of the game itself is frankly, managing and pacifying what is widely recognised as one of the worst, most toxic and vitriolic communities imaginable. It's no small thing to say that the DOTA / MOBA fanbase have been a one of the main stumbling blocks in getting new people to play those games. It's simply not worth it when you're going to get cussed out repeatedly from minute 1.

Hey, remember when Duke Nukem Forever was a joke and we were all looking forward to Episode 3?
  • Lemming81 #20 11 months ago

It's entirely possible we'll be seeing LFD2 on PS3 announced. I'm betting they could have done at e3, but being so close to the PSN hack/downtime they wanted a bit of distance before being associated with it.

Unfortunately, Duke Nukem Forever turned out to be a joke, and we're all still looking forward to episode 3 ;)

One would hope they're not going all the way to Germany just to talk about DLC we all already know is coming. I'd expect them to mention it, sure, but I reckon this will be an official unveiling of DOTA2. Have they shown it running at all? This might be where they do that.
  • mr_pink #24 11 months ago

I'm bored of their new-found focus on multiplayer. I want to play an epic, single-player adventure filled with Valvey goodness. Whatever they plan to announce, I'm setting my expectations to low.

So long as PS3 gets some love... .but HL2 Ep 3 would be nice

So we're referring to it as Half Life 3 now and not Half Life 2: Episode 3?

Don't care either way, just wondering. Half Life 3 seem more likely, I just think Valve are waiting for next-gen consoles to come out first.
  • mikeck #29 11 months ago

For a site that's supposed to have a lot of gamers as readers how is there not more love for DotA2?

Your loss, I'm looking forward to hearing more.
  • Saxo #30 11 months ago

Half life 3 or I don't care. It's been so many years since episode 2 now
  • mornegroth #31 11 months ago

Half-Life for fucks sake!!! HALF-LIFE! xD
  • TackyCheeba #32 11 months ago

Episodic gaming was, and is a bad idea.

Screw Half Life :Ep3...I want a FULL Half Life 3 now, Nothing else will do!

Although saying that, i'd even accept some GENUINE news on the game.

I must have been under a rock.
Why the hell is Valve releasing a Warcraft mod?!
Don't they have better things to do for their loyal fans?

    Imagine this.

    The whole room goes dark.

There is a very faint drum beat in the background. VERY FAINT.

Ten seconds pass. The crowd is getting rowdy.

Then, a shrill, creepy voice pierces the silence...

"Doctor Freeeeeeeeeemaaaaaan...." Imagine the reaction that they'd get if that happened.
