Rage team to move onto Doom 4

Rage 2 likely "cross-generational".

id Software's Rage team - including co-founder John Carmack - will turn its attention to finishing long-awaited shooter Doom 4 as soon as Rage is ready this October.

"As soon as Rage ships, the core tech team moves over to start making things happen on the Doom 4 project," Carmack told Gamespot.

Production on Doom 4 began back in 2008, although little has been heard of the game since. "We were really feeling the pinch before this. If you've got 50 people working on a project, it's not useful to have all of them on day one on there; you really want to have a smaller team building things. Then at the end now, we would have a hundred people on the team."

Still on the subject of Doom 4, Carmack noted the game's single-player was pegged at 30 frames per second. Rage fizzes along at a smooth 60 FPS, but that figure comes at a price. "You can't have 30 guys crawling all over you at 60 frames per second at this graphics technology level because it's painful," Carmack explained.

"For Doom 4, the single-player is going to go 30 frames per second on the consoles. So we can have 30 demons crawling all over you on there. But the multiplayer is still going to be 60 frames per second, so it has the quality feel that Rage has."

While Doom 4 remains on target for release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, id Software's next project - most likely Rage 2 - will be "cross-generational".

"The expectation would be that it's not a brand new engine for Rage 2, since you want people to be able to concentrate on the design," Carmack stated, before mentioning "the project after Doom 4, the next major one, will be designed to be cross-generational".

"We want to have a media strategy session - that we can have something that ships in the quality of Rage on current platforms but actually takes advantage of the next-generation platforms."

Valve? Did you just confuse them with id or do you mean because they are not releasing a new engine?

Anyway, do I read into this news that Rage is running @60fps even on consoles? I haven't followed Rage all that much because I'm not that interested in yet another shooter but I thought targetting 30fps for singleplayer was pretty standard anyway (on consoles). Personally I prefer a constant v-synced 30fps with post processing (especially motion blur) over 60fps anyway.

I'm glad to hear that Doom 4 is going to be next though. Sadly it won't come close to Doom or Doom 2 since games with maze like levels and non-recharging health don't sell anymore these days but I'm still interested in what they are going to do with the franchise.

Awesome and very long-overdue news. Doom 3 was a terrific re-imagining of the series, and I can't believe we've been waiting seven years for a follow up.

The key phrase here is '30 demons'.

    FUCK YES.

My mates were put off DOOM 3 because of the lack of monsters compared to the previous games.

I agreed to an extent, it was a good game in it's own right but not like the Doom we were used to. I think 4 will be a lot better anyway because of what they learned creating 3 and more monsters at a time in the mix will aid that.

    FUCK YES, old-school Doom confirmed!

I think it has been confirmed some time ago that they won't continue what they started with Doom 3 but instead go back to the classic shootouts of Doom/Doom 2. But very good news, yes.

They should have called Doom 3 something else and everyone would have been happy.

    Quite intrigued by this...

Good lord, Rage in October, too? I'm going to have to stop sleeping altogether that month.

There won't be 30 demons crawling on me after they've met my BFG

Looking forward to Doom 4, whenever the hell it comes out. Doom 3 was good, even though it did start to drag on towards the end... and for the love of God, give us a gun with a light on the end this time! I'm sure that most basic thing could be accomplished if we were able to create a Mars base.

    @Der_tolle_Emil

I'm hoping it will have both mazelike levels and non-recharging health and as it's a game where the main selling point will be fan service I'll keep my fingers crossed.

DOOM 3 was both insanely brilliant & disappointing.
Truly epic old school gaming that could have done with a little more by way of enhanced AI.
    Scarey & unsettling too.
    Bring on the RAGE!
