EVE Online, Minecraft servers attacked
LulzSec claims a few more scalps.
EVE Online and Minecraft are the latest victims of mischievous hacking crew LulzSec.
CCP Games' sci-fi MMO went offline earlier today with LulzSec claiming to have hobbled its log-in server and website with a DDOS attack.
A post on the hackers' Twitter feed read, "We just wiped out the login server for Eve Online, and it accidentally took their website out at the same time."
Minecraft has also come under fire, with the collective claiming to have taken out its log-in server.
And the fun doesn't stop there. They also claim to have sunk games website The Escapist.
Another Tweet read, "Primary Lulz Cannon is making toast of Escapist Magazine. The real disruption ammunition is secretly causing hell for their sysadmins. Umad?"
They're notching up quite a headcount now – Bethesda, Nintendo and Sony have also been targeted in recent weeks.

If their hackers their making mistakes by being public. Only a dumb thief craves the lime light. The smart thief remains in the shadow. So not really ninjas!

I'm sure they'll get bored soon enough when they realise the majority of gamers aren't like them and can actually leave their bedrooms and do something else. Such as interact with other humans.

Alot of you will be sceptical at the thought of hacking the US, Russian or UKs defense networks..maybe, but there not the only countries with nuclear missiles, what about Pakistan, India or even North Korea? You think these countries have tight nit security systems? i think not, one of them didnt even realise the most wanted man in the world was living next door to one of their military bases...think about it..Its only a matter of time.

Here's an idea: go after Visa, Amex, Bilderberg and even the Olympics. Show some of those "skillz" we keep hearing about. Piss off the people that deserve it and you might even gain some support.

It doesn't affect me because I dont play it, but for god sake, its been made my just one guy who was successful and now has a small team under his wing.
What the fuck have they done to piss off the hackers? Made a game that's good and people enjoy?
Do I feel a sense of jealousy in the air?

The Sony thing for the first week was amusing. By the second week, we were irritated. By the end of the third week, we were royally pissed off. And now lulzSec are targetting an indie developer? How big and brave of you lulzSec! Bet your parents are so proud.
We're just sick and tired of them now. "Look at what we've done!" Yeah yeah. Another attack that's only screwing over honest gamers and the people who earn a living in these companies to pay their bills and put food on the plates for their families. But clearly we, the people, don't matter to lulzSec...
The word "terrorist" springs to mind. No idea why.

I would also like to see these companies, and dont forget government agencies recently too, take security seriously. If a bunch of hackers can get in imagine what a well organised state sponsored outfit (cough Chinese cough) are up to?
So for the short term inconvenience, yes it is a pain and they could be less damaging about it (would anyone take notice to a polite email detailing security vulns, costing potentially thousands or millions) they are actually doing us all a favour in the long term.

Still wish EG would stop reporting on this crap though, giving them publicity and all. Furthermore, as I don't wish tostroke their epeens, I'm going to refrain from commenting on any further Lulzsec articles. If we all stop responding to the articles maybe EG will get bored of posting about it.

At the very least, they are giving censorship-happy politicians the ammunition they need to Chinafy the internet.

These guys may suck balls but it does make for an interesting read, especially their reaction when one of 'em gets caught.

Thing is, people have a right to be angry. lulzSec are targeting gamers (at the moment it seems), they've said as much on their twitter feed. It is their desire to make life miserable for gamers, millions of gamers. I'd say that constitutes an F word followed by a Y word.
And for what? To what end? Because they can? Because they hate gamers? Do they hate the companies who make games? Hate capitalism? Or is it because they crave attention and by making the lives of millions of people more difficult and less safe they can see their little organisation in lights across the media?
The sad thing is, we're going to hate them. Their aim I fear is to make people afraid to put details into these sites, and cripple companies and the people whose livlihoods depend on them. They are terrorists. They aren't hackers per se - they're not using the right tactics, and most hackers try to go in and out WITHOUT anyone knowing about it. That's what drives a hacker. Sneaking in through the back door without anyone noticing - basically, Garret from Thief. LulzSec are right now just using thuggery and basic overpowering to instill fear and panic. That's it. That's what they want - and the sad thing is, by doing what they're doing, they're getting exactly what they want.
Which is really sad actually. I don't find them funny at all - and it isn't a big journey from where they are to actually opening the doors to actual hackers who WILL subsequently run off with all your details and sell them to the highest bidder. And then what? Will they admit to that? Of course not, because then it's going to be a massive shitstorm they can't contain or even admit to. They're enjoying this whilst it's just causing fear and panic and just causing minor criminal damage and outages - when it does more, will they boast about it? Or will they realise the gravity of their actions and suddenly become all timid? I suspect it may be the latter.
The simple truth is, they've shown they have no moral qualms about who or what they attack. Indeed, they find the whole thing very amusing - openly admitting and laughing at normal people who are being affected. And that's as sad and depressing as it is terrifying...

Because no whines quite like a gamer who can't get online.
These people are professional trolls, and you're all falling for it. Are they socially inept virgins unable function in society? No. Are they terrorists? No. They are school kids and college students out on summer break, who've worked out a simple way to get themselves in the headlines every day and turn hundreds of internet forums into frothing cesspits of rage for their amusement.
DON'T FEED THE TROLLS. Isn't that the first lesson they teach you when you get your internet licence?

If I can equate it, it's like a group of people running down a high street smashing windows with baseball bats. Sure, they may only be targeting the windows but it's causing actual criminal damage, it's going to cost money for organisations who have done nothing to provoke the attack to put right - and more importantly, how would you feel on that high street seeing a bunch of balaclava-wearing baseball bat-wielding hooligans? Precisely. Even if they're only going for the windows, there's a very thin line there. And it takes very little to cross it, or for someone to reach in and start looting.
It's nothing anyone should be defending. Admittedly, Sony fucked up a while back. But this is disturbing - and people should complain. This is an industry, people spend money and want to register their stuff, or want to buy things, or want to play their games in a quiet moment. We're in a world of instant gratification - and people don't want to wait. Can't buy X game because servers are down? They won't bother, or go somewhere else. If somewhere has been hacked, people will be cautious of inputting their bank/credit details. Meaning less sales.
It all boils down to this - what lulzSec is doing is costing people money. And rather like my windows analogy, it's obviously funny to them doing it and remaining anonymous, but it's going to scare the shit out of most normal people. They want attention? Let's hope they get it soon, involving handcuffs, bars, prison showers and bars of soap...
