Metal Gear Solid Wii U under discussion

Nintendo courts Kojima Productions.

Nintendo has approached Kojima Productions about working on a title for the Wii U, the Metal Gear Solid studio has confirmed.

Creative producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana, the man responsible for the forthcoming MGS HD Collection and Snake Eater 3D, told Eurogamer that it was shown the console well in advance of Nintendo's E3 press conference yesterday, and is still weighing up how to best support the new platform.

"Obviously we did have talks with Nintendo early on – they approached us with the Wii U," he explained.

"We can't say exactly when this happened or what kind of talks we've had but we were aware of the hardware and we've been looking at it.

"We are very much thinking about possibilities with the Wii U and it looks like a very fun system. As for whether we'll have something at launch for the Wii – we can't say that. Probably not, but we definitely have things in mind.

"We're also looking at the public reaction. If there are enough people who say they want us to bring something to the Wii U that also factors into things."

Might Metal Gear Solid 5 be a nice fit for Nintendo's new machine perhaps? We tried and failed to tempt Matsuhana into dropping that particular bombshell.

"We anticipated we would get questions about this today and unfortunately our answer is, we can't answer that. We can't say anything right now. Top secret," he cheerfully responded.

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D is the next franchise title due out of Kojima Productions' door, with a late 2011 3DS launch planned.

I hope the lack of any Rising announcements isn't because they decided to release it on this as well, thereby delaying it on PS3/360.

Metal Gear is a multi-format series now, so most likely any new versions will appear on it. The more the (brilliant) series sells, the more chance of more brilliant sequels.

I'd love to see what Kojima can do with this

If any of the MGS HD collections had twin snakes in it to complete the collection it would surely be the Wu version. Would be a nice exclusive for them...as much as I'd hate it.

"Metal Gear is a multi-format series now"

MGS was ALWAYS a multi format series. The original appeared on both PS1 and PC, MGS 2 was ported to both Xbox and PC, Snake Eater is now on both 3DS and 360 and Rising is also multiplatform. The only true exclusive games are Twin Snakes for the Gamecube and MGS 4 for the PS3. Apart from those 2 the rest of the games are spin ops.

I can see Twin Snakes forever being exclusive to Nintendo due to licensing hell and MGS 4 to Sony because of all the Sony branded items in the game. These include mobile phones, consoles, as well as direct mentions of the PS3, Blu-Ray and the DualShock controller by various characters.

I have Twin Snakes on GameCube... its not that memorable I find. Too OTT, PSone version was better.

I know. Perhaps I should of said 'true multi-format series', as it doesn't appear to be an exclusive then ported later series now. Like... they build them from the ground up now for multiple consoles... is what I mean.

    @HyperTails

I completely agree. I very recently re-completed Twin Snakes and whilst it is fun it just can't capture the magic of the PSOne original. The voice acting of most of the cast is atrocious. Naomi Hunter in particular is incredibly dull and mundane. Mei Ling was given an American accent which Konami decided to transfer over to MGS 4 and it killed her personality as a result. In terms of the cinematics, the Ninja is the only one that looks more badass. Snake is doing flying somersualts on top of missiles launched from a Hind D, back-flipping to pick up a sniper rifle and going mental and wanting to shoot key characters because they forgot a codec number. It's just way too OTT. Not to mention Otacon looks 20 years older than he does in MGS 2, a game which is set years after the events of the original.

Twin Snakes was fun, but it cannot be compared to the original. There was just way too much wrong with it than right.

The cutscenes were almost like they tried to 'one up' Kojima on craziness... except Kojima does it right. I know what you mean about the voices as well. I remember that Naomi's was the one that hit me straight away. Jennifer Hale is one of the best voice actresses out there, but she sounded so bored. She was much more positive on the PSone, but TTS version she was off. Not her fault i'm saying, they most likely thought her sounding bored was better.

Thank God she was allowed to do it properly in MGS4.

Are you forgetting the marvelous game boy color MGS with your exclusives? Though I think the existence of the GBC game helps your argument rather than hinders it.

I excluded that particular entry, as well as Portable Ops since they are not really considered part of the main series. In fact the events of those games are ignored entirely in all games that proceeded them. I think Peace Walker made some minor mention of some small event in PO but was otherwise a proper sequel to Snake Eater.

Didn't they get John Woo in to direct Twin Snakes or something? I'm sure it was a different director (and a film director at that) and as a result the cutscenes were changed completely.

if mgs5 is exclusive to wii u i will kill myself
  • Climhazzard #14 12 months ago

The next metal gear would make sense on wii u as the series needs some sort of innovation to keep it going. Its not really been changing enough gameplay wise, except for the graphics which have always been outstanding.
