XCOM release date announced

PS3 version confirmed.

First-person shooter XCOM launches on 9th March 2012, 2K Games has announced.

It launches on 6th March in the US.

The game is no longer a PC and Xbox 360 exclusive. 2K Games today confirmed plans to launch a PlayStation 3 version.

"XCOM is a gripping tactical action experience set in mid-century America, where the player leads an elite field team of specialised government agents into battle - combining deep, visceral gunplay with powerful sci-fi abilities," reads the official blurb.

"Together, they face a vicious and otherworldly enemy, who conspires to shatter our world and rebuild it in their own image."

You play Special Agent William Carter and his team against the threat of human extinction. Guess XCOM is now a squad-based shooter, then.

You "strike surgically" against aliens, capture their technology and turn their weapons against them.

The latest XCOM footage declassified.

    Quiet launch...

The game needs to be renamed to EX-COM, it's got absolutely no connection to the old games, as far as I'm concerned.

The latest trailer looks completely dreadful.

    It still sounds shit.

I would like it to be good, but it is really hard to believe that it will be.

Still, plenty of time to wait and see.

Why the heck they can't just get on and XBLA / PSN some turned based isometric AP-ery I don't know.

That truly looks diabolic and will be a shame to have a greats series have it's name dragged through the mud with that piece of crud.

If this is going to happen, which on current showings I don't think it should, then they should make it like Valkyria chronicles.

Having never played any other X-com, and going just by what I've seen, it looks alright. I hope they play up the 'mysterious' angle, rather than the 'lots of FPS shooting' one, otherwise its gonna get swamped.

    @Duke100

I said the exact same thing, when they first revealed it was going to be an FPS.

Fuck this. We need another generic FPS like we need more rocks on the moon.

Anyone wanting some XCOM-style action from people who actually care about the game, try UFO: Extraterrestrials

It's been modded quite a lot since release to make it even more XCOMish than it already was.

"Yo, the best part is when the alien dude, like, jumps right on top of you! And the music goes nuts! Some serious shit brah! This is gonna be, like, twice as good as Halo! Shit, it's gonna be better than Call of Duty! The multiplayer's gonna be the bomb! I'm gonna headshot everybody with the lazer, man!"

    ...fuck.

    My soul weeps.

Wow, that trailer was eye opening, forgot how much X-com was like tron. And they seem to have diverted away from the goo creatures which looked cool in the previous trailers too. "Nope we're gonna go with a Tron of Duty: Group Fortress 2 motif, get out of my office and wipe that originality off your face". Whereas previously was a sense of enthusiasm and mystery to whether 2K could make a FPS X-Com, now is just terminal indifference.
Thought this would be more investigating & narrative; akin to some sort of L.A Noire X-files with added Goo creatures. *Sad Face*
It looks dated a year before release and the "enemies" or space cube men look less characterised than Keanu Reeves in [insert film here].
I think all I am trying to say is...

    Why?

It actually looks excellent... For an FPS. And terrible... If you're trying to make XCOM.
  • sabbede #19 12 months ago

If its just a shooter: BOOOOOOO! (I may play it, won't buy it)
But maybe, just maybe there'll be research, production, random(ish) missions... I won't damn it until I know.

Well done executives! Don't remember it being a FPS. You would have jammed Xbox live if you released anything like the original. Turn based or even a modern take would have been nice! How about the original or improved original released on live? Now that would be listening!
