Witcher 2 on Xbox 360 in November

UPDATE: CDP confirms 2011 release.

UPDATED: Developer CD Projekt has confirmed the news during its Summer Conference - the The Witcher II is coming to Xbox 360 later this year with all the content from the PC version intact.

ORIGINAL STORY: Two major Polish retailers list PC role-playing game The Witcher 2 for release on Xbox 360 on 15th November 2011.

That's a Tuesday.

There's no sign of a PlayStation 3 version, reveals The Witcher Wiki.

Gram.pl, which used to be owned by the game's Polish developer CD Projekt, has box art for the Xbox 360 version.

Shop Ultima does not, but carries the 15th November date.

Last month the American age ratings board ESRB outed an Xbox 360 version of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

This backed comments by CD Projekt, which told Eurogamer that a new Witcher game would be announced at E3 "that console gamers might be interested in".

"Fans of RPGs should consider The Witcher 2 a must-buy," declared Eurogamer's 9/10 Witcher 2 review. "There's simply no competitor that can touch it in terms of poise, characterisation and storytelling, or the way in which it treats you not as a player - someone to be pandered to and pleased - but as an adult, free to make your own mistakes and suffer a plot in which not everyone gets what they deserve."

Great news I didn't care which console it came out on as long as it came to consoles.
  • Snufkin #2 12 months ago

    Tuesdays suck.

Game looks damn good, but is launching in an already-overcrowded November the best idea? My top tip would be to either release in the Summer or leave it til next February.

Edit: @ Shikasama #16 - There are a tonne of great games that are coming out that month - Dark Souls, Skyrim, maybe The Last Guardian (Pleeeease!), Uncharted 3, plus I'll prob still be playing through Deus Ex. Considering I'd never even heard of the Witcher until last week, it won't be on my radar. But if it came out in, say, July - it'd definitely be in with a shot. As it is, I suppose I shall just have to go out and get some fresh air and sunshine this summer ("Aaaah my eyes my eyes!" etc).

    Please bring it to PS3...
  • StolenGlory #4 12 months ago

    Yes fucking please.

Too bad there is no PS3 version, but I don't blame the devs. Programming is hard work.

  • evild_edd #7 12 months ago

Yes please. Hopefully the 360 version will be cleaned-up from the PC original which was reported to be suffering a number of issues. Game on.
  • M83J01P97 #8 12 months ago

Hmm, not sure this is going to translate very well onto consoles to be honest. Would like to be proved wrong, but I imagine the graphics are going to get some serious 'ganking' for this.
  • StuDevo #9 12 months ago

I hope there is a PS3 version. But if there isn't i will play it on my 360
  • NewbieZilla #10 12 months ago

November will be too busy a moment. I'll have other stuff to play.

Witcher going head to head with Skyrim...not a good plan!
  • DJ_2011 #13 12 months ago

Much too late. Skyrim is out that month and guaranteed to blow this out of the water. They might as well not waste their time on releasing it then, way too late and nobody will care.

EDIT: To those negging my comment do you not see the logic? Skyrim and Witcher 2 sitting beside each other on the shop shelf. What a tough decision on which one to buy....not.

Really pleased that CDP is bringing this to console. Let's wait and see what CDP says at E3 before assuming it isn't on PS3.

However it would not surprise me if they decided to concentrate on one console to start with. They're a great company and studio and I know some of the people there personally. They will want to make this as good as they can and they may well believe that one machine is work enough for their first console release
  • Shikasama #15 12 months ago

Snufkin - If you are playing any game other than Witcher 2, you're playing the wrong game.
  • Kanjin #16 12 months ago

No fair, right next to Skyrim?! Good thing I don't have much of a social life.

Edit: Just spotted the Zavvi ad for W2, £64, is that normal for a PC game these days?

Much as I adore the Witcher 2, I do have to agree that releasing alongside Skyrim is a pretty terrible idea. Even if Skyrim doesn't live up to the hype, it's still going to take sales away...
  • telboy007 #18 12 months ago

    Yay 360 exclusive!
It's on PC it's not exclusive!
    No PS3 version, PSLOL!
    Unchartered 3, 360LOL!
    etc...
  • RodHull #19 12 months ago

Goody goody. Wish it was sooner, can't play the PC version due to my underpowered rig. It had better be a decent conversation, mind you!

Not many care about late ports, but releasing in November definently has its benefits.Holidays, black Friday(US),Christmas...people throw money left and right in that period
  • miiiguel #21 12 months ago

Happy with this. The other stuff labeled as a bad idea is not my problem, I want the game on the 360 and that what it seems it's going to happen.
  • bad09 #22 12 months ago

Right now you get The Witcher 2 can we have RDR? Fairs fair people!
  • Inmediasress #23 12 months ago

I'm just so glad they released it first for the PC and only later try to do the port.
I don't mind if they port it for consoles I don't particularly hate consoles/console people but any game that is multiplat from the start or comes later from a console port as an aftertought usually suffers and has to make many compromises in the PC version.
I know if it's multipalt form the start it will be not a bad port but that doesn't mean it is good as well because then they ultimately tailor it to the console versions.

    @DJ_2011
Oh that was a rather fanboyish comment don't you think????
Do you know why even after a year PC people still wait for a RDR port because we know it's fucking awsome.
Whereas I do agree there are examples when they shouldn't bother releasing a port because the game will be forgotten and not needed like Fable3 for PC.
That was really just a wasted effort it came only to PC because M$ flapped their mouth too much about reviving the PC market and they had to do something for PR reasons tough it backfired on them heavily.
The Witcher 2 is also a game that is heavily anticipated and I think it will have a great following for the xbox as well just like RDR still has many followers on the PC.

Also to say something about Skyrim for christ sake it's a bethesda game made with a new graphics engine people should consider to buy the GOTY edition maybe then it will have patches for the patches of the patches that fix the amount of game breaking bugs that will make it unplayable at release on any platform. This commign from someone who liked oblivion, morrowind, and fallout.

    Yes. fucking. please.
  • WinterSnowblind #26 12 months ago

    @DJ_2011
The two are very different games.. I wouldn't really say one is better than the other. But Oblivion was watered down and had very little substance, I expect Skyrim to follow that trend. The Witcher is much more story driven and doesn't make any concessions for casual gamers or those who constantly need their hand held.

I'm not an elitest gamer by any means, but after the likes of DA2, that has to be appreciated and you're doing yourself a massive disservice if you miss out on this game. Not to mention all Bethesda games are horribly buggy when they're first released, to the point of being almost completely broken. It can wait a few weeks/months.
  • coolbritannia #27 12 months ago

Lovely stuff, but either this or Skyrim is getting pushed back to a sales purchase for me.
  • patootik #28 12 months ago

Great news, been really keen to play this but I just know it would chug like a fucker on my comp and look like crap. Still, like a few have mentioned its gonna be real tough deciding where to put my time when this is released sooooooo many good games coming out around the same time.
  • charliepreed #29 12 months ago

Edited 1 times, most recently on"

Yeah, easy decision. I would buy The Witcher 2 no question. It has already been released to critical acclaim.

Whereas Skyrim has not been reviewed or played by anyone, for all I know it could be dreadful. All I have to go on is Oblivion which was a huge disappointment for me, probably the biggest of this generation. Morrowind is one of my all time favourite games, but after Skyrim I wait for reviews of Bethesda's games before purchasing.

At last. Been waiting on this news for a while. Xbox need a good rpg and my Pc is no where near able to run witcher 1 let alone 2
  • Tryhard #31 12 months ago

November, do I rob a bank or sell the car?
  • 43n1m4 #32 12 months ago

Nice. Was thinking about buying the game for PC, but I wouldn't mind a (good) Xbox360 version instead (my laptop will not run the Witcher 2, and my HTPC is rarely used for gaming although it's quite capable). Skyrim is probably the no. 1 game i'm waiting for, but more good games for the trusty old Xbox wouldn't hurt.
  • geox30 #33 12 months ago

I was so much in love with Oblivion when I first played it.The first Witcher never got my love, even though I tried. The second one is simply the best RPG I have ever played! Now,my biggest fear is that Skyrim may not be as enjoyable as this one..
So,don't know how Skyrim will turn out to be,but do not miss Witcher 2!
  • Peter_LIAR_Molyneux #34 12 months ago

Congrats 360 guys, you are getting a fantastic game. Just please do me a favor and don't complain about the learning curve in combat. Turn it down to the "easy" setting and if you are still getting slaughtered then you can bitch about it on forums.

Too many people these days play on "normal" or higher and if their character isn't breezing through the enemy (like Fable 3) then they bitch and moan about how hard it is instead of sucking up your pride and playing on "easy". They want the developers to completely rebalance the game instead of taking the 10 seconds of time needed to change the difficultly setting.
  • chtgamer #35 12 months ago

the white house and pentagon owns Poland so no PS3 version i guess
  • rottingyoda #36 12 months ago

Just completed the witcher 2. excellent game. will go for me second play through (for a completely different story) later in the summer.

im sure the port will be excellent though it should go without saying that graphics will be throttled back. that of course depends on the the system you have setup. i played it on max everything (w/o ubersampling) @ 1920 x 1200 with a average fps of 45 so i was very impressed. however, the textures arent the main focus of this game so that should look similar once ported. the main focus was the epic lighting, shading and dangling objects etc. that will take a hit.

Personally found the game to be a 9/10. The combat was a little to finicky in the sense that if you weren't 'locked' to an enemy you wouldnt hit them despite slashing his face off. also, the menu system wasnt amazing and console owners will find it even more awkward.

As a whole. Great job CD Projekt. Gimme some expansion packs so I can stick it to those Nilfgaardian sucker MCs!
  • bad09 #37 12 months ago

    @General_Ironfist

They are a small dev with great customer focus, if you want it on PS3 get over to their boards and ask them.

EDIT - I get marked down for telling someone this company might listen if he asks for a PS3 version? Some of you people are completes pricks on this site!

Please release a PS3 version too, CDP! I don't mind if we have to wait a while as I realise you're a smaller developer than some who probably work best on one platform at a time, but some word either way would be nice :)

Maybe we should wait until after E3 to be making "Xbox has no gaems!" posts? It's very likely the Halo remake will release in November, and they obviously do have more games coming, even if they're going to be focused on Kinect. Anyone who says they wouldn't be excited for a new Viva Pinata or Black & White game has no soul.

More likely, it's just some kind of deal with Microsoft to release it on the Xbox or the dev's simply wanted to focus on one system at a time.

I don't see it doing them any good to release witcher 2 in such a busy month like November, espically when firstly Witcher 2 is not a proven franchise on consoles (yet) and secondly the much anticipated Skyrim is coming out just 4 days before it... But thats just my opinion, I've already got Witcher 2 on PC so Im gona go for Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Need for Speed: The run, Assassin's Creed: Revelations and Saints row 3... Too much money!
  • Matthew_Hornet #47 12 months ago

I dunno. The game looks so pretty, it would be a real shame to play it on console.
  • miiiguel #48 12 months ago

^ You can always not play it in a console. Though I'm sure you wont mind if others do and have a good time with it.
  • gregski #49 12 months ago

In a interview CD Projekt Red also stated that XBOX version will include ALL the changes & upgrades that the PC patches bring. They also reassured their PC customers that if XBOX version gets any additional content (like cinematics, quests etc) the PC version will also receive them as a patch, most likely before the XBOX version comes out.

Also they clearly said that they go for XBOX version first mainly because of the human resources available, so they concentrate on delivering the best of their work to one console, instead of doing 2 ports at once without providing enough quality. That might not be good news for PS3 users, but at least is fair with everybody.
  • Xardan #50 12 months ago

  • obscured021 #51 12 months ago

wow! how will they get it to run on a console at a good 30 or 60 fps i have 2 GTX 580 in sli with the settings at max @ 1080p its dose weill to hold at 50-60 fps if i switch on 3d (nvision) it grinds down to 25-30 fps, i will be intrested to see what they have to cut out, pretty graphics or not its still a great game and every one should buy it come november

BTW Sony's been hacked again (film website). See BBC news.
  • Haloboy #53 12 months ago

Let console owners see just how poor DA2 actually was with a real RPG outing.

    Share the wealth says I.
  • Xardan #54 12 months ago

    @gregski

This is great news if true because it means we can expect a good port on the Xbox 360. Obviously this is at the expense of PS3 owners, but im perfectly fine with that : )
  • Matthew_Hornet #55 12 months ago

    @miiiguel
Oh, that's not what I meant, I just meant I wouldn't. Of course I'm sure plenty of people will play it on console just fine - I just hope it doesn't get lost in translation. I just don't trust ports much, especially when it's such a technically demanding title.
  • tejo.hr #56 12 months ago

Must say I like this. I'm only playing on PC, but CD Red got only Witcher franchise to make money on, and both are really top quality games, so why not make money on multiple platforms.
  • JayKwon #57 12 months ago

I would like the witcher 1 as well :). Maybe even included with this edition. You were working on a port for the first version to consoles before anyway, right? Please? Please, please? I just don't want to miss out on your awesome games:).
  • Ror1984 #58 12 months ago

Excellent news! I've always been interested in this franchise, but I'm not sure my pc will run the first game. It definitely won't run the sequel, that's for damn sure. Might just have to take a punt on the original and then I'll definitely be getting the sequel on 360 come November. One guaranteed sale here, CD Projekt!

Yea November i will be playing the hell out of Uncharted 3 and maybe Skyrim. It is a bad idea not to bring it to Ps3 as well. The install base is near the same just makes no sence.
  • Grayvern #64 12 months ago

If you have a processor that is a q6600 or above, ie 3 years old or under, and a reasonable size case; just buy a factory overclocked 560ti, which is almost as good as the 570 for around £215 from a good e-tailer and don't look back.

(If you then buy 20 full price standard pc games over the next 2 years that you would otherwise have played on console you will have made your money back, and with access to steam sales you can have cheap games without dirtying you honour with pre-owned games)

  • panathatube #67 12 months ago

Even with the graphics toned down this IS the game and Geralt is THE hero. Xbox users should grab the game immedietaly after its release it is fantastic! The more i keep playing the more i am surprised about it in all aspects!
  • Inmediasress #68 12 months ago

    @DiamondIce
I think the problem is be it on pc or consoles that some people, well most people expect everything to be a mindles button mashing. Just like when the hunter was overpowered in WOW you went in rolled your face over the keyboard and 2200 arena rating was yours.
Now I don't know whose fault is it, either developers for thinking that people want every game to be a visual novel or young COD kiddies who have not/can not/will not/ activate their brain cells. I blame that on the shody general education not just in the US as it's cutomary to do but also in some European countries as well.
The thing is that nowadays we rarely recieve a challenging game be it console or pc and yeah generally the console are associated with the dumbing down mentality for dumb people.
I'm not saying that I agree, there are brain dead people on all platforms but you must admit that usually you only hear moaning about difficulty from the console side.
    Edited by Inmediasress at 03/06/11 @ 09:59
  • geeza2020 #69 12 months ago

yeah , except the hordes of PC gamers that were crying a week ago about the difficulty in the witcher 2 so much that the devs had to come out and tell everyone to calm down and get a grip. So its not "mainly" console owners whining at all.
  • Inmediasress #70 12 months ago

    @geeza2020
That's why I said usually and not always.
Pc also has a fair share of fanboys and idiots. From a personal opinion I saw more complaining over the years from difficulty standpoint from the console side but that's strictly personal.
  • gmmonkey #71 12 months ago

The game is an excellent RPG. I played this immediately after dragon age 2, and the difference in quality between the two games is massive. I thought DA2 was ok'ish, and I was of the opinion that it had some redeeming qualities. However, after playing witcher2, I have now reassessed my opinion and now think DA2 is a load of bollocks. By contrast, CDprojekt RED have made Bioware look like basement modders. I hope it gets released on all consoles and is extremely successful. The devs deserve a pat on the back in the form of money to encourage them to do more of the same.
  • geeza2020 #72 12 months ago

WoW - mutilated from its original form to make it easier for new players
Starcraft 2 - Blizzard had to put in place game modes to teach people how to play multiplayer because it was too "hard" for people to get into
    Witcher 2 - as i said above

    - these are the only pc exclusives that i can think of at the moment that have been released/updated recently and they've all had issues with pc players complaining about difficulty levels. PC gamers and Console gamers are as bad as each other IMO. For every console CoD obsessive, theres a PC gamer who has just got a PC that plays games to an average standard and is just as clueless as his console brethren.
