The Witcher 2 patch 1.1 problems

Game launcher "does not work properly".

The downloadable content option in The Witcher 2 game launcher "does not work properly, please don't use it".

That's the advice of game developer CD Projekt, which addressed patch 1.1 criticisms on its blog. Add-ons for Witcher 2 can be downloaded independently by emailing special addresses specified on the website.

"The Downloadable content option in the Game Launcher does not work properly, please don't use it," sated CD Projekt.

"This option (same as Register Game) still doesn't work properly, but for every resulting problem we provide you with a workaround.

"Currently the only problem remaining is with the Language Packs. We will provide you with a solution for this issue as soon as possible. Registration through the Launcher will be fixed in the upcoming days, and our goal is to have it work perfectly in patch 1.2."

That second patch is planned for next week.

Patch 1.1 was released last night to rectify many early bugs identified by the community within the superb role-playing game. The patch also made Witcher 2 a rare DRM-free PC game.

"So what's next?" the developer continued. "First, we have set up our own team to improve the server structure and repair the above mentioned game registration. A team is also working to finalise our new forum. We will launch these services very soon. For sure, you will be informed as soon as they are ready here.

"Then, by the end of next week you can expect some more free stuff available online.

"Stay tuned, especially for our online conference scheduled for the 2nd of June. Exciting new announcements are coming!"

The Eurogamer review turned up 9/10 for The Witcher 2.

    Doesn't matter. Game is still awesome.

    The patch broke control pads though - can no longer use the analogue sticks for the menus. Since the controller implementation was actually preferable to the KB/M in combat, this has crippled the game for a lot of people.

    Apparently it'll be addressed 'no later than patch 1.3' but that could be as much as 2 weeks away. My advice, if the game runs fine, don't patch.

    Also reports of stability being impacted and DLC problems not having been fixed depending on how far into certain side quests of Act 1 you are.

    Great, great game - shame it has these niggling issues.

    Mine works just fine after the patch and indeed I've got a boost in performance.

    Funny thing is though I haven't had any problems with the DC option, installing the patch, or running the game. Lucky me.

    So the patch needs a patch? If that patch will need a patch too, I'm starting to worry we're heading towards an infinite regress. :|

    @EG - come on you should also mention the 9GB patch for Steam users which is also causing lots of people pain (I did flag this to you in comments on the other Witcher article) - especially for those on download caps and/or slower connections. Other patches for non-Steam are ~50MB or less.

    All future patches will most likely involve a change to that pack file so Steam users have many more 9GB+ downloads to look forward too! Me included.

    Can't fault these guys for anything. There's so much awesome in this game, they'd have to to some pretty crazy stuff before I lose faith

    I hate to say it, but whatever happened to games working when they were released? Not after a load of patches?
  • Haloboy #10 1 year ago

    Games advanced. And with that technical issues advanced also.

    The patch worked just great for me, as did the lovely free new suits DLC. CDP had my cash, now they have my respect and my gaming heart to match.

    @repeater

    Yo dawg, I herd you like patching, so I put a bug in your patch so you can patch while you patch.

    Although it may look bad i much prefer this approach of releasing fixes as soon as available then holding off until they are perfect. Lets be fair the only problem at the moment is that people can't download alternate language packs.

    To those commenting about repeatedly downloading the steam version, you can set it to not update automatically as the game still plays perfectly.

    Is this what gaming news is now?

    Mon • Patch released!
    Tue • Patch doesn't work!
    Wed • Patch patched

    @Seoh
    "To those commenting about repeatedly downloading the steam version, you can set it to not update automatically as the game still plays perfectly. "

    From what others are reporting Steam deletes the 9GB file FIRST before downloading the newer version. So some people have been unable to stop that download and still have a game they can play.

    For those on slower speed lines and/or bandwidth caps I can understand their unhappiness at CDP implementing a single 9GB file in the Steam version given how Steam updates.

    I doubt a high percentage of people set every game they download to not automatically update as auto-patching is one of the benefits of Steam.

    @Vitor - You can still use the D-pad to navigate the menus and select the number of items/Orens to use. The only issue with the non-functioning analogue stick in the menus is that you cannot scroll down the Quest info shown to the right in the Journal which might make completing some of them awkward. Silly bug really, can't see how they managed to mess that one up.

    I'm so glad I didn't opt to buy the Steam version as that 9 GB download for the patch is ludicrous when the GOG/retail disc one is under 16 MB! :o

    Mind you, I find Steam to be a bit flaky at times as I've had several instances where I've tried to install Steamworks games from disc, only for them to start downloading instead. And Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 twice tried to redownload the entire game instead of the smaller patched files. Add to that the annoyance of not being able to install games where you want to like with EVERY other PC game and those inflated prices and Steam is turning out to be very unappealing to me except for the odd sales bargain.

    Got a big kick in performance with the patch. Love this game.
  • curtlikesmeat #18 1 year ago

    @jumpdeveraux

    You've actually cleared something up for me - I had no idea why Steam always had such massive patches. I basically stopped playing Dawn of War 2 when it required a 6gig patch as I didn't understand why when the whole thing was probably less than that - so it's downloading the whole thing again, but repackaged?!

    Thankfully I bought my copy of the Witcher from PC World - outrageous I know, but I happened to be walking past and it was £24.99 for the edition with the extra dvds and all that other stuff, so I couldn't really say no!
  • CaptainKid #19 1 year ago

    Even better performance?!
    I got an €300 PC with a €30 graphics card and the game already runs smooth on high settings.

    I particularly like this part about what to do if you reinstall the game;
    "The installation program will ask you for an activation code. However, as the game is now DRM-free, you can enter anything in the relevant field."

    Hi-five CDP!
    The game has been pretty solid for me so far (just started act 3), the only problem I've had is not being able to download DLC, but a second playthrough is pretty much guaranteed at this stage, so that's no biggy!
  • darkmorgado #21 1 year ago

    Still can't install the patch. Along with loads of others, I'm getting "invalid or incomplete game version" when I try to install it. Tried every version of the manual patch, tried reinstalling, made sure every trace of the game is deleted before i reinstall, and nothing.
  • dfunked #22 1 year ago

    @darkmorgado
    The game should patch itself automatically when you reinstall, so no need to separately install this patch... (or are you getting this message then as well?...)
  • devilmyarse #23 1 year ago

    Could not care less. Them removing DRM from every version (giving my retail copy a 30% boost, now I get the performance I expect from a HD6950) gives them so much kudos in my book that I can overlook this tiny insignificant fault. Besides, the launcher still works fine for me.

    I'm just wondering do pc gamers have a lot lower standards then console gamers? Fallout NV got a lot of flack for running the way it did but I'm having a lot more problems with the Witcher 2 just in chapter 1 then I had in the whole of Fallout NV.
    I have to restart the game about 5 times in 2 hours play for frame rate getting progressively worse, some controls not responding anymore and various sound glitches. The game is awesome, but the way it runs should not be acceptable.
    At least it hasn't downright crashed yet, but losing the ability to swing your sword mid fight pretty much hast the same result.

    Run into town, "You there, sheathe your sword" "Sorry I can't, I'm pressing 2 honestly it's not working" "Sheathe your sword now or else" "Careful don't hit me, Quen is still active for another 20 seconds" ZZZZAP "Men we're under attack!" Bah restart game.

    @SvennoJ

    I have had the problem a few times, when all you can do is move, everything else freezes, including looking around.

    Be sure not to save during that time, i did and had to go about a hour back to redo everything, usually restarting it from a previous save fixes it, i just make sure to save regular now.
