Survey points to Legacy of Kain revival

Which name do you like?

An online survey has hinted that Square Enix may be considering a revival of the Legacy of Kain series.

A GameRevolution reader claims to have undertaken a survey that asks for opinions on various names for a potential Legacy of Kain game.

"The four names were Obsidian Blood, Obsidian Sun, Dead Sun, and Revenant," said reader "daverabbit".

"They also asked if the names sounded good alone or tagged with any of the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver/Blood Omen names used previously."

The Legacy of Kain series won critical and commercial success for its storytelling and unique visuals.

The first game, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, launched on PSOne in 1997. It was developed by Too Human maker Silicon Knights.

After a legal tussle Tomb Raider creator Crystal Dynamics made subsequent sequels with stories penned by Uncharted scribe Amy Hennig.

The fifth game in the series, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, launched in 2004 on the PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox. We haven't heard from the series since.

    Not too worried by the name but a new Soul Reaver game in particular would be cool. Loved that back in the day!

    The thing is, Raziel was by far the more interesting playable character. Kain is better as a narrative type.

    I'd love to see the trilogy remade into one epic game.

    The soul reaver games where beyond awesome.

    It all got a bit weird and convoluted when we hit the tiem travel thing, but the whole idea behidn the seraphim and whatnot was brilliant. Good platforming too.

    I love the Legacy of Kain series. I even bought Lara Croft Guardian of Light just tot get the Kain & Raziel DLC, just to play as them once more - thankfully the game is quite good :)

    I'd be happy with remakes, or sequels, or the start of a new franchise in the same universe. Nosgoth has a fantastic amount of lore built up in it, I'd love any excuse to see a bit more of it again.

    PLease God, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.........I need more Legacy of Kain, I'm a massive fan of it, even have a tattoo of Raziel's clan symbol on my back, and I need to know what happens after Defiance...I will seriously piss my pants with joy and scream like the little fangirl I am if they make a new one! I only bought that Tomb Raider game on PSN for the Raziel and Kain character pack!

    I would like to play new Soul Reaver with Raziel. I have played the first one recently on Dreamcast and it is still excellent game. Great level design, characters, story, puzzles, voice acting, music and mainly switching between dimensions or planes when everything changes around you in realtime.

    BTW music track Ozar Midrashim by Information Society was perfect fit for SR.

    It would be great for them to release a game that tied the narrative together into one package. A re-hash of the previous game sinto one anrrative arc so we can all get back to grips with events (a lot like the story mode in the new MK) then they could use those sales as a platform to take the series forward.

    I kind of forgot about these games. I think the last one I played was the one with Raziel on the PS2? Did that game exist or am I making it up? The original PSOne Soul Reaver though, I remember that game well, so dark, but with cool characters well written and good performances by voice casts I thought. I'd definitely give a modern sequel/reboot a go.

    I never got into this game despite having a Dreamcast version. Judging by the buzz an HD remix would be great.

    I just want them to finish the story off, but it's it's "Soul Reaver" it's pretty much jumping the shark, what with Raziel having been killed off forever in Defiance.

    I also can't get too excited, since it's one single guy without any proof. At least our reactions are showing that people are interested, though.

    I came into this series also at the ps1 Soul Reaver game. Amazing game. Great voice acting (especially for its time), music and a great balance between platform/combat and puzzles (something a lot of games don't do now - usually combat takes the focus).
    Also I loved the story... especially how Kain and the other brothers and fallen from grace during the time Raziel was away. All the his brothers and transformed into grotesque and decadent versions of themselves and their Kingdoms lay in ruin

    I vaguely remember the teenage me having to pull out a dictionary to look up abhor and paradox straight after... Can we have HD remasters of the originals on one disc and then a brand new sequel please!

    I would absolutely love another Legacy of Kain game - it's one of my favourite game series, and the only one I deemed worthy of getting a tattoo for! :p But there is a part of me that dreads what will happen if Amy Hennig isn't on board (given that she's at Naughty Dog now as Creative Director on the Uncharted games, it seems unlikey).

    The story pretty much completely finished with Defiance and Blood Omen 2. There were a few things left open, but it wasn't exactly a cliff hanger.. A new game would almost certainly be a complete reboot, or simply have nothing to do with the Soul Reaver/Raziel arc.

    @WinterSnowblind - Of course, you are right. Except that the Elder God is still alive until after Soul Reaver, the world is still damned and never gets restored, Raziel's sacrifice is nothing more than a useless token gesture because Kain doesn't do anything with it...

    Soul Reaver = massively under-appreciated series IMO. Probably the best story of any videogame ever. Wasn't keen on either of the Blood Omen games though. The PS2 one in particular was really ropey.

    I've often wondered who could replace Tony Jay as the Elder, if they ever made a new game. Gabriel Woolf and Michael Sheen both presented very similar voices in Doctor Who.

    Theyd better be. It's either them or that Eidos Wimbledon thing from the projections last week, but if they've got a new team on it it probably won't be very good. CD don't have Amy Hennig though - if they hire her to write it and then get a team to make it that might make it a good game. But animating it in London? That sounds weird. That would definitely make it sound like the Wimbledon new ip.

    When do they work out titles? Would this be for an E3 reveal?

    As much as I adored the story (and yes, that was perhaps the best opening movie in a game ever in Soul Reaver, beating even FFVIII), for me the pure joy of Soul Reaver was the level design. It was utter perfection - every area was multilayered so you could return later with additional powers and explore further. I don't think I ever finished the game with all of the powers unlocked, despite trying a few times I could never seem to find everything on the same playthrough. Absolute genius.

    Interesting. While I loved the stories of these the gameplay was a bit lacking for me. Will they bring it up to modern design standards or stay true to the originals?

    Brings a tear to an oldschool Legacy of Kain fan to see so many positive responses to this, and not a single neg. And there's a very good reason why. The Legacy of Kain series was THE FUCKING BOMB.

    But, I'm worried by this. HD Revamps would be nice (Ha, just noticed, revamp - suggestion for the new title? xD), but the finale to Defiance was so... finite, and perfect, that I don't see how they can possibly continue it. With Raziel now becoming the Reaver entirely, and Kain once more restoring balance to Nosgoth after suckerpunchering the Elder God, that massive hentai tentacle fiend, it would take some TRULY magnificent story telling to resurrect that. Hennig did wonders with the series. I'm just not entirely sure it's in a stable place for a revival.

    Oh, and fyi guys. Kain > Raz. Any day of the week. So what if Raziel shifts between realms and has a glowing spike of pure energy for his weapon... hearing Kain yell "VAE VICTUS" still gives me chills.

    Would prefer a HD Soul Reaver 1 and 2 to a full blown sequel. Or a guardian of light style xbla game. As long as it's Crystal Dynamics and not Silicon Knights. Didn't realise they made the first game, but Too Human was awful.

    @rivuzu - Kain also has the SEXIEST voice and most chilling laugh ever, thanks to the god that is Simon Templeman. I have to say I preferred playing as Kain in Defiance, but Soul Reaver really struck me as something amazing which is why I didn't get the Pillars tattoo instead.

    Honestly I'd be happy with anything, as long as they got as many of the original VA's back as possible.
