Brink sales: 69% Xbox 360, 23% PS3

UK Steam version still unavailable.

Brink has topped the UK all-formats chart this morning with a large majority of copies sold for Xbox 360.

More than two thirds of sales - 69 per cent - were for the Microsoft console. Only 23 per cent of Brink UK sales were for PS3.

The remaining eight per cent of sales were for PC.

The skewed result could be the result of PlayStation Network being offline in the weeks leading up to - as well as on - the day Brink was released.

UK PS3 online gaming returned Sunday afternoon.

Note that Gfk Chart-Track doesn't count digital PC sales. Nevertheless, the Steam version of Brink remains unavailable to this day.

Bethesda told Eurogamer this morning "we're looking into the matter".

Eurogamer scored Brink 8/10.

The first 15 minutes of Brink.

It'll be a good game once it gets out of beta.

    Could be? COULD be?!!

Does Eurogamer have shares in Splash Damage?

I'll buy it when it turns up in a Steam sale at Christmas; I bought The Witcher 2 DRM-free from GOG.com this week!

How long does it take to "look in the matter". Just flick the fucking switch!

Lens of truth have their head to head up and the ps3 wins easily.

It actually looks like a very poor 360 version has been dished up so i'm actually annoyed that 360 owners are splashing out on the game.
If the sales of the 360 version remain good, developers who knock out a poor 360 version will likely do the same in the future.
I wish people would vote with their wallets sometimes.

The game is pretty bad as well it must be said, i still can't believe eurogamer gave this 8/10.

Deffo due to psn being down. Perhaps sales will pick up again this week though I.e gamers who would have bought it on ps3 haven't switched to the 360 version but decided there was no point buying it day 1 withought online.

I know personally I would have been tempted by this but last night was the first time I got to play socom online so will just be on that the next few weeks
  • thebuttonz #8 1 year ago

Here's hoping for a bunch of pre-owned 360 versions to start turning up when multiple platform owners switch back to PS3. Then I'll invest.
  • estel #9 1 year ago

I'm pretty sure Bethesda are dodging the Steam issue. There's no way after this time they don't know *exactly* why it's missing from the Store.

Brink makes the number one spot and yet every game i play online i play against bots?

    What the hell
  • tiny_Eggy #11 1 year ago

Nah in the UK Xbox 360 sells more than PS3. Brink is unplayable online anyway going by the reviews. :D
  • randompanda #12 1 year ago

TechnicianTed - why are you annoyed 360 owners have bought a game for their 360? Even if it is a shoddy port (I have no idea) most normal people don't stop buying games for their consoles just because one website says a rival format's is slightly better.
  • Layzlo #13 1 year ago

Thanks for this awesome update. Any gaming news to report now?
  • pokota #14 1 year ago

FPS games always sell better on the 360 and fighting games always sell better on the PS3. It's like an unwritten law.

Great post, randompanda. A lot of people have been saying that for years, though. Ever since the "Face-Off" feature began on EG, IIRC.
  • technicianTed #16 1 year ago

randompanda, i'm more annoyed that it's selling well on 360 because of its unfinished state.
The game has so many problems, there's another patch on the way.
I just think they are taking the piss releasing a game in this state, it annoys me when the sales seem pretty good.

I can just see the developers rubbing their hands with glee saying 'they'll buy anything that xbox lot' :p

    XBOX 360 Version
First I hated the game because it promised so much - 8 maps is just not enough!
Then I got into it and liked it a little more.
Then went online - it updated and deleted my level 11 chatacter!
The lag is terrible - worst I have ever seen.
Now I hate it again :-(
  • SleepyDeathFred #18 1 year ago

    It's great on PC.

Sony is learning a hard lesson indeed. I think that once they estimate the lost revenue, they will *really* take security seriously.

i pre-ordered the PC version on steam and its fine, really weird that it dissapeared from the steam store on release but the same thing happened to metro 2033
  • nuanimal #21 1 year ago

Wait, a heavy online multiplayer game sold badly on the PS3 - where the online multiplayer functionality wasn't working on the PS3?
  • Fightclubber #22 1 year ago

Has anyone played Brink and had their entire game be full of humans? I keep playing against skynets rejected A.I robots and its pissing me off.
  • HyperTails #23 1 year ago

I've not heard a game get such polar opposite responses from gamers in a long time. I was thinking of getting it when the price drops but i'm not so sure.

Though PSN being down has definately affected PS3 sales. Why buy a FPS that is really ment for multiplayer when you can't play it online?
  • Retro_ #24 1 year ago

Played PS3 version via PSN with some mates last night. No Lag.... No graphic texture fill in, in fact, compared the the Beta, the graphics are very good.... Clear comms. It's a decent co-op game, all it needs is a few more missions. Looking forward to the DF versus article as I think the PS3 version is polished.

    Neg away!
  • Tryhard #25 1 year ago

The love hate amongst the gaming community for Brink reminds of.

    Release of Homefront-servers.
    Release of TDU2 -servers- bugs.
Release of Fallout New Vegas-save corruption-bugs.

There is a trend here but I just cannot put my finger on it.
  • GamesConnoisseur #26 1 year ago

Most PS3 owners preferred to get slightly inferior PS3 ports on a good number of occadions in the past, and shouldnt be suprised if when situation is reversed this is also true for X360 owners.

As there are other considerations, friends list, preferred controller and so on.

We dhouldnt dhame people who freely made their choices, but would still be important to be aware of variations, the shortcomings and so multiplatform owners cn make their choice.

    Bayonetta, FFXIII etc.

I m avoiding Brink due to mixed reviews but will rent.
  • funkateer #27 1 year ago

Don't FPS games usually sell a lot more on the 360?
    Bulletstorm worldwide sales: 0.73M (360) versus 0.19M (PS3)
  • tinyspark #28 1 year ago

Really starting to distrust Eurogamer, Brink, brink, brink all over the place. Stories, adverts and a microsite and 8/10 review for a game that's getting slated elsewhere. Seems like someones getting paid for some positive spin.

  • Mister-Wario #30 1 year ago

If what's said about different genres selling on different consoles is true, maybe it's down to the controllers and the style of console. I mean, the 360 is known mainly for its online multiplayer which invariably manifests in the form of shooters. And considering the 360 is widely held to have better triggers on the controllers (though personally I quite like the PS3's softer triggers) maybe that facilitates that console's prevalence for shooters.

The PS3 is an interesting case. I mean, yeah, there are shooters but it also seems a little more willing to try more unusual titles like LittleBigPlanet, so fighters get more of a foot in the door because the focus isn't purely on shooters all the time. Plus, you can't deny the PS3 controller has a better D-pad (which is a godsend for games like Pac-Man CEDX and Scott Pilgrim) which may facilitate fighting games more.
  • siallen #31 1 year ago

i think its a excellent online shooter , prefer it over crysis 2 and black ops for online , but i mainly purchase a game for its online experience and customisation . will be getting LA noire next week tho that looks excellent and should revolutionise gameplay!
  • Gearskin #32 1 year ago

You can't buy the PC version through GAME either. Not as a download anyway. Probably because the download version requires a Steam account to play?
  • deano2099 #33 1 year ago

Eurogamer always note the score and link to the review on any news story, it's their editorial style. Check any other news story about a released game. It's nothing special.
  • metalangel #34 1 year ago

Brink will be all but forgotten in a month or two.
  • Spydy #35 1 year ago

....hardly news worthy. 360 is a shooter fan console, PS3 isn't.
  • subedii #36 1 year ago

    @HyperTails:

TotalBiscuit just released a video feature on Brink, and I have to say, it's a really good review. He points out all the flaws with the game, but also points out exactly what the game gets right and why. Definitely worth looking up, it's very in-depth (pretty much an hour long) and ought to give you an idea of whether you want the game or not. To be honest, I've found most of the reviews of Brink to be pretty bad or lacking. A lot of that is down to day 1 issues that the game had (and those shouldn't be excused), but to be blunt, most of the negativity I've seen is simply because the reviewer is trying to compare the game to Call of Duty, and it simply doesn't work along those lines.

The short version is: If you're on the PC and you like the style of gameplay that Splash Damage games espouse (or just in general, heavily team focussed games), then Brink is DEFINITELY something you want to look at. Either way, look it up, it's pretty in-depth in what the game's about, and I feel he hits all the real issues with the game, both positives and negatives.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9zDpaQPo...

EDIT: @ Pinkyrocks: Dude, Brink is 8v8. Fair to slag off the game on what issues it has, but at least stick to the facts instead of manufacturing stuff to complain about?

Multiplatform PS3 games have taken a huge dive and they were getting better, easy come easy go.
  • coolbritannia #38 1 year ago

PSN wasn't offline when Portal 2 came out. Explain that one.
  • subedii #39 1 year ago

Must be a console side thing.

In which case, yeah, wow, that's pretty bad.

EDIT: No hold on a sec:

In the meantime, we have made a configuration change for 360 users (which will be available to the PS3, once PSN is up) that alters the number of human players when matchmaking for “Campaign” and most ‘Freeplay’ modes to eight total human players. This new configuration will allow those connecting to and hosting matches (particularly those with lower upstream bandwidth) to more reliably find and connect to quality hosts via the match-making process – resulting in less lag and more fun. This change is being rolled out today and will be available worldwide.

For players who haven’t been experienced lag, we’ll still support 8v8 on all maps via a new ‘Big Teams’ configuration in Freeplay, and through custom settings in Private matches. There is no download required for this update and it will be available automatically the next time you log in to play Brink and launch either campaign or standard Freeplay matches. This should allow players new to the Ark as well as veterans to find quality matches suitable to their preferred play style.

8v8's are STILL available console side. The difference being they're not the default game mode. When you're dealing with guys hosting off of home connections, I can pretty much see why. Not brilliant, but as they say, it's a temp measure.

I would prefer to play a slightly worse "port" of a game on a console which works, than a slightly better version on a console with a crap controller, terrible online functionality, no cross game chat...

PS3 = mono gaming, FIFA, COD chavs....
  • Walkerj #41 1 year ago

i would have expected this with or without PSN. reviews havent been great and its essentially 100% online. Oline like that has always been much more of a 360 thing
  • subedii #42 1 year ago

Therein lies the problem though, since you can't really test for lag issues on PSN whilst PSN is down.
  • MDL199 #43 1 year ago

Teamallstar said "I would prefer to play a slightly worse "port" of a game on a console which works, than a slightly better version on a console with a crap controller, terrible online functionality, no cross game chat...PS3 = mono gaming, FIFA, COD chavs...."

Are you calling the 360 the console that works?! That'll be the console with the worst failure rate of probably any major piece of electrical equipment gaming or non gaming ever released.

As for the dual shock being a crap controller that'll be why almost every controller since the release of the original Playstation has copied it to varying extents. The only reason the Xbox controller swapped the positioning of the d pad and left analogue stick is to avoid being sued by Sony.

As for PS3 gamers liking Chav games that'll be why unique titles like LBP, Heavy Rain, MAG and Demon Souls amongst others have done so well. It's the 360 crowd heavilly populated with dumb Americans that only seem to like games where they can "blow shit up".
  • metalangel #44 1 year ago

If every controller "copied" the dual shock, then the original PSX controller "copied" the SNES controller which "copied" the Master System controller which "copied" the Intellivision controller (it had a crude dpad)

Fanboys. The Dual Shock (or whatever it's called now, Sixaxis?) isn't bad, once you retrofit the awful L2/R2 triggers with some levers to replicate the lovely triggers those COPYCATTING N00BS at Microsoft and Sega have on their Xbox and Dreamcast controllers.

Actually, I would say this is less a PS3/360 problem and more of a Bethesda issue, with Bethesda going "Testing? What testing? We've got an entire World filled with alpha and beta testers out there! Paying ones!"
  • septimus #47 1 year ago

    Not surprising.

Plus really EG; could be? FFS obviously.

Reading the headline I just knew who the author was.

Is writing articles that attempt to undermine consumer confidence in Sony and the PS3 this guy's job now?

  • borkedconsole #49 1 year ago

The only reason i can think of EG giving Brink an 8/10 is because Splash Damage is a european developer like EG is an european site. Brink is below that score.
  • The-Jack-Burton #50 1 year ago

To be fair, the PS3 does have quite few more exclusive titles to choose from and given the fact that Brink is utter crap, maybe they chose to purchase something else.

  • The-Jack-Burton #51 1 year ago

And when Bethesda says they are looking into something that means they just haven't decided on the line of bullshit they want to feed everyone.

They do this for every single fucking game they release, it's either someone else's fault or they'll tell you some crap story when they get around to it.
