More COD Modern Warfare 3 details

More "epic" story, more destructible.

A new report suggests the story of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - thought to be codenamed Project Collossus [sic] and due out 8th November - will be of a much grander scale than previous Modern Warfare games.

As the story unfolds, multiple countries will be drawn in to the conflict, Kotaku heard from a source - creating a potential World War III scenario.

As for a time-line, Modern Warfare 3 apparently starts where MW2 stopped. Urban warfare, where tanks rumble through streets used by cars, will be the game's bread and butter.

We're told that MW2 heroes John "Soap" MacTavish and John Price "may" return.

Like Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3 will focus heavily on destruction of scenery and objects.

The world expects Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to be unveiled at E3 next month.

Can't really complain about those revelations.

    Can we?

I have a theory that the bonkers finale of MW2 was Zampella and West setting up a ridiculous task for anyone hoping to do a follow-up sequel, as a last jab at Activision.

After all, America has repelled the 'Red Dawn' invasion and is heading to invade Russia, Soap and Price are outlaw renegades and the rest of the world is going to hell in a hand basket. You can't exactly return to the Clancy-style escapades of the first game, so I guess we'll get more crazy "WW3" madness?

I'm looking forward to seeing Battlefield 3 and this going head to head, its goings to be interesting at the very least.

Still think won't be a patch on Battlefield 3, yet the reviewers will overlook the fact that deep down MW3 will still be the same as MW1 but with a bit more destructibility!!
  • riceNpea #6 1 year ago

Collossus?! really? are literacy standards not low enough already without help from Activision?
  • StriderRex #7 1 year ago

Spot on @ supermaniacs, I'm probably just going to get Battlefield 3 as it looks excellent and to be frank I want to keep supporting EA, I have Dead Space 2 and NFS:HP and the both of them are excellent, I'm willing to bet B3 will be as well, whereas MW3, well, you nailed the description perfectly :)

You mean Activision are going to spend money on making the game engine actually support destructible objects? Or is it going to do what BF2 did and just have a few token wooden panels that you can blow up?
  • joelstinton #9 1 year ago

Supermaniacs- Thats a little unfair. Adding destruction is quite step up that can effect gameplay quite a bit. After all most shooters are a floaty hand on screen shooting terrorsits in a mixtures of greys and brown, a can of whoopass, and explosions left right and centre.. Gameplay rarely evolves that much in any shooter does it?

Previous COD sp player levels are a perfect fit for RUSH mode esq/objective gameplay, i wouldn't be surprised if that is COD mp main draw, but also squaring of maps for std TDM play etc

If CoD adds destruction then good for it.

I'm still not totally sure what BF has that puts it at apparently unreachable distances from CoD. The core gunplay is exactly the same, sniping aside. BF is more fun because of the map size and nature of the objectives and so the teamwork (or rather 'spam XP to reward people for doing what they should be anyway... ;)), which CoD could ape if it wanted to. I doubt it will, it's done well enough as is.

Just wait till the trailer comes out. I'd be gobsmacked if it turned out looking better than BF3.

"Modern Warfare 3 will focus heavily on destruction of scenery and objects"

Did Dice sell them Frostbite 1.0 now that they moved on to Frostbite 2.0. lol

"Like Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3 will focus heavily on destruction of scenery and objects"

This is rather a good reason to buy the original Battlefield 3!

Also when it comes to destructibility the Frostbite has already proved to be amazing.

What a twatish comment. Well played.

Love it how it is automatically assumed that Battlefield 3 will be superior when both Bad Companies were generally less well received by the gaming press than both MW games.

    Typical.
  • rojjer #16 1 year ago

Destructibility? This can only mean good things. And competition for Frostbite 2 engine with whatever the new engine (it has to be, right?) for COD will only mean good things for gamers (my engine can bring buildings down, well MY engine can level and entire street..)

Bring it on. I too like both BF and COD (and am looking forward to a break from Bad Company franchise..)

I hope iw can get destructability working in their aging engine without a knockon effect to the fps. Personally im going for bf3 because cod has went downhill since 4
  • hippyjump #18 1 year ago

Oooo this is interesting. Seems to be trying to after some of Battlefieds unique selling points.

    Fight!

The only thing that has kept me interested in Modern Warfare is because for a change you actually play as the brits, credit where it's due to Infinity Ward during the West/Zampella heyday, they didn't just do the standard "play as US Marines", but actually made the SAS pretty much the main characters.

If you do get to play as the SAS/SBS/Brits/Scots etc in MW3, I'll put aside my hate and pick it up.

"I'm a hardcore, non-teenage gamer, and I'm gonna make a pathetic joke or comment on how COD sucks and only kids play it"
-fuck that shit. CANT WAIT FOR MW3
  • drhickman1983 #23 1 year ago

I shouldn't really look forward to this, but for some reason, against all logic, I actually enjoyed the campaign in MW2. Think it's because the story seemed so damn implausible I just let myself get swept along.

The story can only get more batshit crazy. If Soap and Price do return I'd be tempted to rent the game at least.
  • chrisola #24 1 year ago

I traded Black Ops off fairly quick after growing tired of the early on-line, but i still have an open mind to this being good.

Its a fresh start in a way with a new team behind it --- i'd love the same level graphics and set pieces etc but with destructible environments and better ai -- there is room for an epic dumb shooting gallery in the FPS market and this should be it.
  • BlinkeredAxis #25 1 year ago

Loved MW1 and 2, but I thought BLops was a boring mess, and the single-player story was utter fucking crap. They need to sack the lot of them and get some decent gameplay and storytelling back into this franchise, or it'll end up dead, like Medal of Honour.

The Battlefield people know that they are way ahead, but need a strategy to get the Daves away from CoD and FIFA for five minutes. Goood luck with that one.

Wow. So not only has COD got less entertaining as the games have gone by. They are all the same shiz over and over.

As each Battlefield games are released they have managed to get better by each game. Bad Company 2 was EPIC! COD:BO was short and dull, like MW1 and 2. WaW was the last great COD.

    They're both named John?
  • inutaihanyou #29 1 year ago

Although i think that activisions business model is crap, and treyarch just exacerbates fan rage..i will be picking this up. Maybe while i'm waiting for respawn's new game, sledgehammer and the rest of IW can spice up the series abit
  • Tkozy #30 1 year ago

    @RedSparrows

I'm not sure that the gunplay is "exactly the same" between the two series. CoD games have never felt as weighty to me. BF guns have always had some tangible heft to them, whereas CoD is more arcadey. I've played all of the CoDs (all of em) and most of the BFs, and BFs of late seem a bit more sophisticated.

Just my 2 cents (erm... pence).
  • Bursiene #31 1 year ago

@acuratebob "WaW was the last great COD." LOL what are you on about this was one of the worst! The best thing about WAW was Nazi Zombies. COD 4 is without doubt a classic.

  • BishBashRoss #32 1 year ago

    @Tkozy

For me it's always been quite the opposite, COD controls and weapons feel more solid, while Battlefield lacks weight. I enjoy the multi in both though and am interested to see how the new titles turn out, hopefully they're both excellent.
  • carlitoswagon #33 1 year ago

Destruction my arse. The entire gameplay of cod would have to change radically to support this. My arse.
