Sony PSN restoration targets end of May

And a possible 41 days offline.

A spokesperson for Sony Japan has warned that PlayStation Network may not be fully operational again until 31st May.

Shigenori Yoshida told Bloomberg that the plan was to "restart services fully" by that day.

As of today, PSN has been offline for 19 days. The service went down on 20th April.

Should the PSN restoration go the distance, the online platform will have been unusable for 41 days.

A phased restoration of PlayStation Network was supposed to happen last week.

On Saturday, however, Sony announced (via the European PlayStation blog) a delay to this strategy brought on by the breach of Sony Online Entertainment's servers.

As you may know, we've begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We're still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.

As you've heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won't restore the services until we can test the system's strength in these respects.

When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we're doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.

41 days???? I think it's time to ditch the bitch and get a 360 instead!
  • captain_Carl #3 1 year ago

They've been saying this for a while now, EG. FULL restoration - including store. That doesn't mean the service can't be partly up before then.
  • oldtrusty #4 1 year ago

Don't Sony know that Lent was last month?
  • Supposedcorpse #5 1 year ago

So the same dates Sony already gave? FULL service by the end of May with parts of the PSN service coming back soon - should have been last week but with IT nothing ever goes to plan. I expect some services back this week.

Duh, read this before getting any conclusions...

You guys should have learned by now

They are talking about the FULL restoration of PSN, they have said before that this was going to happen by the end of May, but other services are gonna be up way before this happens

If your interested in Brink, it's obviously not a good idea to go for the PS3 version.

  • YobRenoops #8 1 year ago

It's FULL restoration including Store. The partial will be the online gaming and sign-on. Correct the bloody article.
  • omisnad #9 1 year ago

So much for the LA Noire preorder DLC ... not to mention the MK codes im still waiting to redeem. Oh, and MX vs ATV Alive devs must be pretty p'ed off.

    hahaha oh dear oh dear

lucky for me MGS4 is singleplayer
  • Mattattattatt #11 1 year ago

Wow. Well, I'd say getting multiplayer up is going to be the priority for most gamers, but if the store is down much longer there's going to be some angry developers and 6 weeks of releases that won't have got the promotion they needed on there...
  • bnazir #12 1 year ago

    total disgrace!
  • macksed #13 1 year ago

yeah it does seem like it should be important to highlight the fact it is very likely that some online functionality will be restored before that date; a lack of store probably wont annoy consumers so much (might be a touch different for PSN devs though).
  • Haerger #14 1 year ago

I heard PSN will be up anytime but the Store will be ready end of this month.

I wouldn't say strange negging more that this whole palaver has brought the worst sensationalism out of all the gaming media outlets. People desperate to jump on any and all information and hype it to the max. Half the time it seems that all the websites just have people sat on NeoGAF waiting for something to post to drive traffic!
  • Darren #19 1 year ago

Wow, that really is a surprise not that if affects me in any way as I don't play games online at all. I feel sorry for people who do enjoy onlne gaming though and it is a big blow to publishers who've released games with online functionality, e.g. Portal 2, Mortal Kombat, Motorstorm Apocalypse, etc.

The offline L.A. Noire is out next week so I doubt I'll miss PSN to be honest; I certainly haven't so far anyway! Bet Rockstar are glad they didn't add an online mode to L.A. Noire as well! :p

The longer PSN remains offline though the more damage it'll do to the PS3's already shaky reputation. Not a good time to be a Sony employee really...
  • ZizouFC #20 1 year ago

Yeah, Brink is gonna suffer. I'm sure Bethesda is pretty pissed since sales will be lost...

Really hope the online side is sorted for Brink and there developers, and any other developers with games just come out. But at the end of the day i rather have sony making sure this is done right.
  • milks #26 1 year ago

No wonder they dropped the '2 free games' press release just before this bombshell

In some ways if it means making PSN more secure then I don't mind so much, though it sounds like they're rebuilding the whole thing and I need to play Portal 2 co-op!

And generally, if they say end of May, it'll be the end of May at the earliest.
  • Architect_z #27 1 year ago

I can wait. It's not ideal, but its not the end of the world.
  • RodHull #28 1 year ago

Frustrated that it's taking so long to sort it out but would rather have a secure system than the flimsy one from pre hack. Dreading the first few days of the service being back though, unlikely to be playing games what with all the updates for games and firmware. Hopefully they'll sort out this as well whilst they're tinkering under the bonnet.

  • loveless #34 1 year ago

With their constant desire to put bright / arty backgrounds on the PSN store, that prevents you from being able to read the text, the store has been kind of unusable for a lot longer than 41 days.
  • markmitt #35 1 year ago

Games still update even though PSN is down. Data is stored on the DEVS servers for this. Well, Crysis 2 made me update, and I got that after the PSN went down...

"please avoid tabloid like headlines EG, you're better than that."

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no.
  • HyperTails #37 1 year ago

I bought Homefront the day PSN went down. Of course, I didn't know it was down at the time as I got it in the morning, but even if I did know, i'd of bought it anyway as we didn't know it'd been hacked then.

Anyway, as a result of this i've not been able to actually play the game online so far. I like the campaign, but for a FPS it lives and dies by its MP, and I have yet to try it.

Its not just Homefront either. White Knight Chronicles 2 is out on the 27th, and i'm not gonna' be able to give that a whirl online straight away. Which pisses me off as I loved the 1st.

Anyway, my point is my patience... has gone. I was really patient up until now, knowing that they had to properly check and see if its secure, but they said it'd be up last week. Now the end of May!? Not happy Sony, REALLY not Goddamn happy.
  • miiiguel #38 1 year ago

We had a major, major corruption on our main datababase this weekend. We had a very compromising 12 hours downtime. If we had 41 days downtime, we would close our doors.
Horses for courses, we'not in the ludic buisness, but anyway...
  • Beano #39 1 year ago

Last week (sunday) Sony said that they would have the service partially online within that week (which they didn't manage to do) and the entire service (including PSN Store) online within this month. I guess this is the same schedule the spokes person is talking about?
    Nothing new then ... or?
  • Darren #40 1 year ago

@omisnad - Oh hell, I'd forgotten about the redeemable pre-order DLC. I do hope that some of PSN is up and running by next week in that case so we can use the codes because L.A. Noire could possibly get delayed if it isn't. And that would the worst thing EVER as far as I'm concerned as I'm so looking forward to playing that game.
  • BartonFink #41 1 year ago

"It's FULL restoration including Store. The partial will be the online gaming and sign-on. Correct the bloody article."

Curious. What do people base this on ? The riskiest area of the infrastructure is likely to be the authentication systems/servers. These are a key component of online gaming/sign on.

I thnk anybody who expected a major infrastructure change like this in anything less than a month was kidding themselves. And that includes Sony.
  • Darren #45 1 year ago

@BartonFink - Not that I agree with it but I saw someone on another site post PSN = Piece o' shite network. Made me giggle a bit anyway.

  • RexRunti #50 1 year ago

I've heard rumours that these "outside entities" are Visa auditing them.

As for the "gaming will be available long before this" crowd, Sony stated last week as that deadline has clearly passed this is the only deadline we're left with.
  • tomkuryakin #51 1 year ago

I'd rather Sony got it right than rush out something that wasn't ready. It's annoying for PSN to be down but it's hardly the end of the world.

"Curious. What do people base this on ? The riskiest area of the infrastructure is likely to be the authentication systems/servers. These are a key component of online gaming/sign on."

The whole point is that EG is deleberately trying to post old news with a negative spin reg. the planned schedule. Last week Sony said that the full service (PSN Store) would be scheduled to be online within this month and the primary services online before that.
Sony screwed up (again) by giving a deadline (ending 1½ days ago) which they didn't manage to fulfill. But that's not the same as the service will be offline till the end of the month as the article makes it sound like. As previous mentioned - not thing new here.
  • ShiftyGeezer #56 1 year ago

This statement was from Saturday, e.g. after the "gaming back online" deadline the only idea we have on when gaming will be back online is this latest statement and I think giving Sony any benefit of any doubt at this point is rather naive.
  • digoutyoursoul #62 1 year ago

its a good job starhawk and uncharted 3 are coming otherwise i'd trade it in for 360/ds games
  • knocker #63 1 year ago

@beano That I understand. Online news sources from the Guardian to Carp Fishing Online depend on regurgitating news stories with increasingly lurid headlines to generate page impressions.

I was just curious from a technical perspective why the online gaming part of the platform could get back online and not the store. My professional curiosity almost outweighs the inconvenience as a customer. But only almost ..
  • GR1up #64 1 year ago

EG must be congratulated on their old news update....... breaking news bin ladens dead
  • technicianTed #65 1 year ago

41 days would be bad it must be said.

It's certainly affected me regarding portal 2, i had planned to buy it on ps3 but knew of course you wouldn't be able to register it on steam until psn was back up.
So i opted for the pc steam only version as i bet several others did as well.

There's also a couple of downloadable games on xbl i might have bought on psn as well, but of course we can't access psn yet which equals more lost sales.

I do worry that the hackers now have a taste for sony. Once the new security is up i think they'll find it a turn on to try to inflict more pain on them.
It's the way hackers work, they love a challenge and will be targeting sony throughout 2011 unfortunately.
  • coolbritannia #66 1 year ago

Wonder how many people complaining about the article are PS3 fans?
  • steadynedy #67 1 year ago

Game updates still work, patched Critter Crunch when i fired it up last week :p

Hoping online play is up soon, still my intention to get Portal 2 on the PS3. And i'm yet to play demon's souls so not ready to abandon my PS3 just yet.
  • Seansy #68 1 year ago

As long as lessons are learnt from this, and it doesn't happen again then that's great. If it happened to my xbox I would've been pissed! But I don't think it would warrant me changing consoles, even if I was a PS3 owner. It will more than likely be a lot more secure now.

It's good Sony are willing to give two free games to their users. Hopefully they are good titles.

    Seá
  • RevanNL #69 1 year ago

But chances are the titles they're going to offer us are first party games that most users already have anyway.

EDIT: I love how I'm being negged for stating that no moronic hackers are to dictate my choice of purchase. Those who negged me: Do you let everybody push you around? Or is it just hackers?

I would imagine they want the bulk of services back up and fully operational ahead of 7th June which is the start of E3.

It's going to be a major embarassment if PSN is still on it's arse when they try and wow gamers with their keynote - and it will certainly taint their press coverage.

I was hoping to play Portal 2 with my mate who I frequently play online games with over PSN, instead I've gone back to my X360 and I'll be sticking with that for the forseeable future, as well as trying to convince him to make the move also.

  • Cronan #84 1 year ago

This really is becoming farcical now.

I own both the 360 and PS3 so I am pretty impartial but I must say that the pace of this recovery is becoming ridiculous. I appreciate that it takes time to repair the damage but the inconsistent information coming from Sony is poor and not helping matters.

In the past I have tended to play most of the 3rd party titles on my 360, but since the start of the year with Dead Space 2 I have been finding myself playing the PS3 more and more. After this event the PS3 has returned to the exclusive only console, with my 360 for everything else. Sony are indeed lucky that Infamous 2 and Uncharted 3 belong to 2 of my favourite franchises of this generation.

I wonder how the 3rd party developers are dealing with this. Sucks to be SD releasing Brink this week which has a fairly important multiplayer aspect. Great to be MS though. I wonder how many people are jumping ship.

@snake_2011 The store is a fundamental part of the PSN offer. It is actually the part that I want back the soonest. After just picking up 50 quid worth of PSN vounchers the week of the crash.

  • MizzouGaming #88 1 year ago

Defend SONY all you want but this is no longer hurting just SONY its hurting the entire industry. Developers invest millions in developing games and not having access to the PSN the week it launches can cost them their whole studio in this bad of an economy. If I were developer launching games with the PSN is still down Id be hiring legal representation to begin looking at possibly bringing suit against SONY for possible breach of contract. We don't have access to the deals between SONY and its 3rd parties so I cant tell if they any legal ground to stand on but I guarantee a lot of devs are going to start looking into it.
  • themorganator #89 1 year ago

While I would normally come on here to troll and laugh at the Failstations abysmal online performance, even I (as a 360 fanboy) feel something for the millions on online gamers screwed over by these hackers. I'm sure the same group are going to go after XBOX LIVE soon, but as far as I'm concerned - you get what you pay for. Live has more features, is stable and costs less than 80p a week. simples.

  • arcam #94 1 year ago

I cant tell if they any legal ground to stand on but I guarantee a lot of devs are going to start looking into it.

Sony may not be big on security analysts but they're certainly big on lawyers. I'm sure there are clauses in their contracts about Sony not being responsible for earnings potentially lost from network downtime.
  • HiddenAway #95 1 year ago

I think the word "Full" is missing from the headline. It's perfectly possible that most of the more vital functions will be available before then (as in the online gaming portion).

All sites I've seen so far are misleading on their headline except for Kotaku :p. Cut it out. It doesn't help matters one jot.
  • GamesConnoisseur #96 1 year ago

    Wow just wow

I dont just refer to the possibilty of being offline for MUCH longer than most people anticipated or xbots prayed for, but that valid expressions of complaints or criticsms are all negged heavily!!

Thats just to show a lots of frustrated PS3 owners out there, easy to vent those on peopke who DARED to take advantage of the situation or to make fun.

Come on, be honest, we cannot be happy at all about any of this. Guys ease up. Both frustrated PS3 and others seeking to take a piss.

Afterall we dont wanna to see others crowing when Steam or XBL get offline for a long while do we?!

Don't get me wrong, I'm missing psn as much as the next guy but I would never jump ship to xbox, blame the hackers, I would wait two months for it to be fixed fully than this blunder to happen again! there hasn't been any reports of fraudulent activity within peoples bank accounts yet, so let's hope Sony do a good job in rebuilding cuz hey we might not be so lucky next time! Besides it wants to come on soon cuz I'm getting sick of watching soaps with the misses n having to engage in regular convasations with her lol

There is a simple solution to this situation.

    Buy an Xbox 360.

    Or a Wii.

    Or a 3DS.

    Or a Dreamcast.
  • Valver #109 1 year ago

Who's to say that when it comes back again it'll be secure then anyway? Sony don't exactly have a great track record with security and DRM in general. Yeah, they're doing a re-write of PSN - big whoop! That's just an opportunity for their under-pressure coders to make more mistakes and leave vulnerabilities !

Wouldnt suprise me if someone decided it hack it again just for shits and giggles.

On a more positive note - bring back PSN online play quickly please. I dont want my PS3 gather dust anymore.

"Wonder how many people complaining about the article are PS3 fans?"

Wonder how many people bitching about Sony don't have a playstation. It doesn't affect you so move on.

I'm finding it a big inconvenience, but still this is not something Sony planned for. They got hacked so it's just something I have to deal with, I hold no grudge with Sony only with the hackers responsible.

Words could not describe how disappointed, angry and let down I feel. I understand that no system is impenetrable, however in the past few weeks many damning articles have been written regarding Sony's lack security, old programs and basically major flaws in every element of the PSN network. People have complained about Sony's poor communication, I think that is maybe a bit harsh, we should definitely have at least one update a day and also a timescale should have been given much earlier. Nevertheless for me these are minor issues. I am a bit annoyed that my card details may have been compromised but as many people have pointed out it's easy to change a card number, less so your date of birth and address.

What shocks me is that Sony did not have any backup plans just in case the network experienced 'intrusions' or hardware failure on their part. Nearly 3 weeks without PSN, and we're possibly not even half way, what a big joke! All I want to do is play online. The worst part about this outage for me is its timing, it included easter holidays for many people and 2 recurring 4 day weekends - I was looking forward to a bit of Black Ops & Fifa etc. In fact due to this outage I may delay the purchase of some games, e.g. I had brink pre-ordered ages ago for £31 but is it really worth it if I'm unable to play online which is major part of the game. As I said earlier, all I want to do is play online, it would've nice if Sony were able to run a kind of parallel PSN whereby we had the ability to continue playing online purely as guests - therefore this would not be linked to our PSN accounts,we wouldn't have access to the store etc - at least to appease the community.

Some people have said that PSN is not a right, but let me put it this way, if the PS3 was a purely offline (and therefore lacking) entertainment hub, would you have you purchased it in the first place. I'm also a Plus member so I'm probably a tiny bit more entitled to the network than non-subscribers so that I can have the ability to download free games which I normally already own.
  • maximusfarticus #144 1 year ago

  • ShapeThrower #145 1 year ago

The main issue I have with this whole debacle is the fact that with PSN down I can't access any of the content that I paid for from the PS Store or the content that came as part of my PS+ subscription, why's this an issue ?
My console YLOD'd the day that PSN went down and as a result I lost everything on the hard drive. So even though I've got cloud storage as part of my PS+ subscription with all my game saves in it, what good does that do me when the network isn't available ?
I now have a pile of games sat next to my console that I don't want to start again ...
Playstation Customer Service's answer to my question .. You should've backed up your system ..
Wonderful response .. It certainly makes me think twice about purchasing digital downloads in future ...

Anyone else read posts by charliechan in the voice of (Viz character) 'spoilt bastard' ?
  • TopKatt #147 1 year ago

Okay, quesion for you techie types. Why is online multiplayer far more laggy on my 360 than my PS3? I only ask in case there's anything I can do to improve it as I'm kind of limited to using Live for the foreseeable future it seems! Both consoles are connected wirelessly to the same router by the way.
  • Xardan #148 1 year ago

A different sound: I don't give a fig about Sony's network problems and I think more than 50% of the PS3 users agree with me. As far as I'm concerned they could dump it altogether (save a patching service). A nice side effect would be that my credentials wouldn't be all over the internet.

Except that all of those features you mentioned are pretty much worthless IMO. You may attach value to them. But there a plenty of people like me who couldn't less about something as 'Party Mode'.

Anyway you're clearly some foaming fanboy: In one paragraph you criticize PSN for not supporting mute functions, then you criticize it not having enough people use voice chat!
And your assertion that being allowed to use 'any shitty old headphone' is Sony's fault or even a drawback is just plain pathetic. Whether I want to spend £9.99 or £99.99 on some headphones is my choice.
  • RexRunti #155 1 year ago

    @TopKatt

If your connected wirelessly try changing the position of your 360 with the PS3 as there may be interferance. Or if you really care about online gaming use a wire. Wireless gaming is far more problematic than wired (I even bought a wired adapter for my Wii).

"(rumble in the controller, trophies, custom soundtracks, in-game XMB being examples of things that PS3 fanboys dismissed as worthless in the past)"

Well if I had to pay a monthly premium for those features I certainly wouldn't want them. Would you, if you had to pay again for them?

Is the PSN up yet? I'm guessing not. But I never said I owned a PS3. (for the record I do)
But since I do the vast majority of my online gaming on a PC I'm not too concerned. And none of those features such as cross party private chat or whatever matter to me as I hardly ever use them. But if I did want them I'm pretty sure I could get something similar...... for free.
I'm loathe to play the PC snobbish elitism card as other have done on this thread as I like my consoles, but Live can't match the online experience on a PC.
And thinking about, where is the Xbox 360's answer to DC Universe Online or MAG, or LBP or Modnation Racers - I suppose Far Cry 2 supports user generated content, but that's on multiple platforms anyway.

  • chessboxer #171 1 year ago

    @trubadman

A back-up system would be pointless in this instance. A back-up (which they might actually have - no one here knows if they do or don't) would be an exact replica of the live environment, this includes security protocols. Sony would receive even more slating if this happened.

I wouldn't believe everything published about their lack of security. Some security expert (who has never worked for Sony and was relying on 2nd hand information) stated that Sony were using an old version of Apache on all of their servers, whereas a simple search using Google's cache shows that in March 2011, the servers that they have now taken offline were running the latest version of Apache.

    [/link]

Sony said on Saturday it had removed from the Internet the names and partial addresses of 2,500 sweepstakes contestants that had been stolen by hackers and posted on a website, and said it did not know when it could restart its PlayStation video games network. The company, under fire since hackers accessed personal data from about 100 million user accounts of its PlayStation Network and PC-based online gaming services, said in a statement details posted on the inactive website also included three unconfirmed e-mail addresses.

The data came from customers who entered a 2001 product sweepstakes contest. The list did not include information on credit cards, social security numbers or passwords.

There is a situation where the delay to recover Store may piss off gamers, even those who don't really want to buy anything: activating Online Passes.

These are usually activated through the Store. If the new PSN doesn't let consumers bypass the Store and go directly to the publisher's serves, it can lead to odd situations where online multiplayer is back but you can't play the game online anyway. IIRC, Mortal Kombat *does* feature an online pass...
  • fabiosooner #186 1 year ago

    @RodHull

Game patches and updates run on different servers and are working right now. By the way, it's a great time to start updating whatever games one has; it has never been so quick a process. Lots of people probably just thought it wouldn't work, what with the PSN down and such. I did patch three games yesterday in less than 2 minutes each, for example.
  • DarkSeptember #187 1 year ago

    @ fabiosooner
You make a very good point regarding online passes, before PSN went down I deactivated my account on my PS3 because I didn't to play the First Strike maps on black ops, this may mean that when PSN is restored partially I won't be able to play Fifa.

OH Sony, how on earth did you allow things to get so fu**ed up? I have already traded my Playstation 3 in, it took some balls but I decided the last thing I wanted is to be a sheep bleating "outrage" while soon after taking my medicine. I'm going to be disappointed to miss some good looking PS3 exclusives but life will go on.

I only wish people had the courage to perform actions rather than simply blow a lot of hot air. This isn't about PSN being down, what it is about is the fact Sony have surrendered millions upon millions of customers most personal details while trying to cover the whole thing up. I hope PSN never gets back up and running, it will serve this faceless corporation a good lesson in loose morales.

  • markmitt #198 1 year ago

Personally couldn't give a toss about online gaming. Sure there are some titles that are fun for a couple of hours online, but it's not the deal clincher. Put it this way, I have Xbox Live Gold sub as well, and my 360 gets as much use as always as it always did. About 10% to PS3's 90%.

Others absolutely have to have online play, but I'm sure they do not make up the majority.
