PC RAGE includes level editor

Modding tools available from launch.

The PC version of forthcoming id Software FPS RAGE ships with a full level editor, the game's creative director Tim Willits has revealed.

Willits told PC Gamer that it will offer the very same kit that the development team used to build the game. "Pull down the console, type 'id studio', then press enter. Then, bam, there's all the tools we use."

Mastering it might take some time, however. Willits noted that the set-up is rather more sophisticated than in id shooters of old, such as Doom.

"Building levels from scratch is more difficult, because we have a layer system in some of the levels. I can foresee somebody modding up Wellspring [a town in-game] and adding different characters, giving them different voice-over."

Last month, Eurogamer's Tom Bramwell braved a hands-on session with the OTT FPS, which is due out on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September.

"RAGE is shaping up to be an interesting departure, and the balance the developers appear to have struck defies obvious comparisons," he wrote. "You certainly can't fault it for depth and variety."

    Nice to see a former PC and now multiformat developer showing some PC love for a change. I'm sure the modding community will appreciate that. Crytek take note! ;)

    Just think a few years ago that kind of thing didn't need to be advertised as everyone assumed that every game released with guns could be modded.

    Would be nice to have level editors like this on PS3 games. If you could then set some bots loose in them it would be great. Can you use bots in your own pc levels?

    I'd like to see them put this capability in the PS3 version as well, much like other games are doing with that console.

    Yep it's a nice thing probably it means they don't want to milk you with useless DLC content.

    Just think about it a few years ago you didn't pay for things that Diablo1-2 randomly generated

    @Darren

    Crytek are releasing mod tools to be fair to them, didn't have it at launch sure, but at least it's coming.

    Anyway being moddable is always a good way to butter me up. Still not sure if I'll bite on Rage but that's certainly a tick in the reasons to buy list.

    It's nice to release a map editor. I hope they release an SDK too. An id game without deathmatch just seems wrong,

    This is a very good move on their part. Mods make a game much better.
