Team Ninja teases Dead or Alive 5

"Thinking about" PS3, 360 as platforms.

Next month Dead or Alive fighting games return after a five year hiatus with Nintendo 3DS brawler Dimensions, but what about Dead or Alive 5?

"Dead or Alive Dimensions received positive feedback and responses from consumers, so there is definitely a future ahead," Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi told Eurogamer.

"Team Ninja would like to progress and work towards that future."

Will Dead or Alive 5 appear on home consoles, including the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360?

"We'll think about it. We will take that into consideration."

Dead or Alive 5 was first rumoured to be in development in January 2010.

It was said to be planned for launch on PlayStation 3 – although a Xbox 360 release was not ruled out.

Dimensions is the first Dead or Alive fighting game to launch since the high-profile exit of Tomonobu Itagaki from Team Ninja.

There have been a number of Dead or Alive games since its 1996 debut, four of them in the fighting genre.

The last Dead or Alive fighting game was Dead or Alive 4, which launched on the Xbox 360 exclusively in 2005.

Eurogamer's Dead or Alive 4 review smashed in a 6/10.

Dimensions is described as a "collection" of all of the DOA fighting games, and a return to the series' roots.

It features 60fps visuals – if you turn the 3D effect off. With 3D on, it runs at 30fps.

While Hayashi confirmed Dead or Alive has a future – possibly on home consoles - he said the development team has "no desire" to make another game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS.

"Dimensions has just finished being developed," he said. "So for the time being there is no desire. But what we want right now is for people to play the game and hear their opinions."

    DOA was my fave fighting game, accessible and flashy.

    Dead or Alive is such a second rate Fighting game.

    Its got nothing on the depth of Tekken or Streetfighter.

    Although there is alot of hot women in the Cory Yeun 2006 Dead or Alive Film.... So I guess thats something.

    PS. I didnt say it sucked I just said its second rate.

    As long as the gameplay has sufficient bounce, I'm in!

    DOA4 6/10? That game was amazing I spent so much time online with that game, about 1000 times longer than SF4! EG reviews are funny!

    Loved all the DOAs but I'll never pay for online again and after this week I'll never game on a PS3 ever again so unless Team Ninja want to branch out to PC (unlikely) we must part ways from here. I'm sure it will be a fantastic fighter though.

    "It features 60fps visuals – if you turn the 3D effect off. With 3D on, it runs at 30fps."

    Errrr, yes? So? Rendering 3D graphics means you have render a frame for each eye, so performance will be halved.

    @Hermiod

    Yeah, that's what they're saying. Why are you picking on that sentence?
  • Geowolf #10 1 year ago

    Hmmm, so Stream launch title I'm guessing.
  • MattEdWithCheese #11 1 year ago

    it's not called stream, it's refered to as project cafe with some people thinking it has steam integration but personally I think it's just hot air

    DOA is such a beatiful fighting series. Lovely reversals and great characters with seemingly realistic skills. Stupid fireballs and unrealistic juggles can bog off as far as I am concerned. All I ask is that DOA games feature a ton of unlockables. 4 Really dropped the ball on that one. ULTIMATE was simply amazing, I am hoping Dimensions follows suit.

    Where is everyone getting this Stream shit from or is it just the same guy trolling the name around?

    Ah, it is. Stop it please. It's Project Cafe until the name is announced. Simple really.

    Frankly I thought the last good DOA game was on the Dreamcast. Since then I've not been very impressed with the series. It would take a really stand-out update to tempt me back.

    @bad09: Many early 360 games suffered poor reviews on Eurogamer.
  • sega #16 1 year ago

    If not on 360 and PS3 then what? The Wii? It's unlikely but would be nice to give Wii owners a proper 3D fighting game for a change.
  • Caimbeul #17 1 year ago

    @Photoboy: Dont they all "stand-out"?

    /sniggers in childish manner

    Seriously though, would be a great launch title for Nintendo's new console but will Nintendo allow the Gratuitous sexuallity of the game?

    Traditionally DoA has always been on cutting edge hardware, so I don't really see how Dimensions is a return to the series' roots. If anything, it's the first major deviation since the uneven ground and tag team gameplay of DoA 2, as no DoA game has been on a handheld before, used a touchscreen for shortcuts to moves or been a massive step backwards visually.
  • mr_pink #19 1 year ago

    Could this be any more formulaic? This is what's wrong with the gaming industry, safe, boring and predictable sequels. Team Ninja had flash of brilliance in its early days and then became a one-trick pony.
  • rivuzu #20 1 year ago

    @Ap3xx

    Go revisit DOA4. You can do a maximum of two floor kicks before invincibility frames kick in, and even then the attacks do very minimal damage. Seriously, if you want to whine about anything in it re: AI, whine about Alpha-152. To date, still the hardest Beat'em Up End Boss I've ever fought, and I've played pretty much everything BEUp since 2003. She's overkill, but brilliant because of it.

    @Hermiod

    Monkey ball on the 3DS claims to do 60fps in 3D mode but its graphics aren't of this quality they look more like DS standard or close to it.

    I still don't get why the 3DS can't render all 3D games except those really pushing the system at 60fps. Dreamcast was only 360 dmips not much more than half the 3DS's 600 dmips approx yet could render a more detailed image with better textures at a full 640x480 60 fps progressive display which is over 3x the 3DS screen size. Its gpu was only 100mhz although was a incredible gpu for its time. The 3DS seems horribly compromised somehow in its specification.

    Maybe the issue is the 3DS draws too much power and if they pushed the system we'd end up with 1-2hr battery life?
