CD Projekt clarifies Witcher 2 console talk

"It's not going to look like crap, definitely."

Work won't begin on a console version of The Witcher 2 until the flagship PC release has happened, CD Projekt has explained to Eurogamer.

When that day comes, plans will be laid out for the new project, which may gain additional content beyond that of The Witcher 2 on PC.

Importantly, however, The Witcher 2 will be the same game on console as it is on PC. It won't be The Witcher 3.

"Production wise - coordination and scheduling and budgeting - this is a new project for us. But it's not going to be a completely different game: it's going to be the same storyline and everything," Thomasz Gop, senior producer at CD Projekt Red, told Eurogamer.

"We crave for potentially adding something new like some brand new content into the game. But still, we are talking about The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings."

"I can already promise you that if we're going to do this on consoles it's not going to look like crap, definitely," he added.

Gop went on to reveal that "no", the console version wasn't in production - "at least not officially".

"We're definitely not a team that can do multiple projects at the same time," he elaborated. "We're warily not doing it this way because it might compromise the quality of the first PC release."

"So no, no no no, we are not in full-scale development on the console version of the Witcher 2 right now. There were tests like a proof of concept, so we at least know that it's doable, possible. But we are not fully producing the game right now. Nuh-uh."

CD Projekt still hasn't officially announced the console version of The Witcher 2, regardless of how much of a 'sure thing' the project appears to be. That trepidation stems from The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, a console project suspended due to Atari funding problems.

"We failed due to reasons we could not have foreseen," recalled Gop, "so it seems [a game's development is] always dependent on something. But the truth is we're not holding back [with Witcher 2 on console]; we definitely know that after finishing the PC version we want to sit down and we want to start working on this," promised Gop.

"We won't wait to see how well The Witcher 2 does on PC first," he added. "After we release The Witcher 2 on PC we just sit down with Excel or Project and make schedules, make plans. Then we will be totally glad to announce what is coming out; we know what team we have, what capacity we have, but we still have to plan out the amount of work. Then we will tell the world what we plan to do and 'it will be that day of release', potentially."

The Witcher 2 is weeks away on PC. Alec Meer, whose preview of The Witcher 2 was published today on Eurogamer, was very impressed with what he saw: "From humble roots," he wrote, "we have our king-slayer."

Combat in The Witcher 2.

Excellent. Although development for consoles is apparently a lot more difficult than for PCs, due to older CPU tech, so if it really is 'an afterthought' it may still never happen. And they're now at risk of coming slightly after ME3 and Skyrim, when most people are RPG-saturated. Will still likely buy it.

I don't want to play that game on PC, but I would pick it up right away for my console. I like that they appreciate that interest exists in the console version of The Witcher franchise, and I also find it good that they didn't ignore or wave off questions about it.

It's not their focus now, they're looking in to it, taking the time to make the best decisions, nothing definite, etc...That's fine! :) Best of luck with the PC version, but I won't be buying it, as I'd prefer to wait.
They did great with the first Witcher, and really could not have shown more regard and appreciation for the support from their players, and of that of the game itself, and pride in their own game, but that's where I am on this.

Utilising the superior hardware then giving the consoles their version rather than giving us a watered down game? Top stuff!

Unlike the console people who normally bitch about us asking about PC versions of console games I wholeheartedly agree with bringing this series over to them to enjoy as long as PC is not compromised (hello Crysis 2), besides the more money for CD projekt the more PC games we get from them!

    Just watched that combat video

There were lots of other weapons in Witcher 1 aswell, but they were about as useful as a thing that isn't very useful. They were entirely pointless. If there is more of the same ion Witcher 2 and I have to spend 25 hours wtaching the same combat animation with the same sword I'm going to murder the nearest Icelandic I see. With an axe.

Bringing it to the Xbox should be faiirly easy compared to making a PS3 version I would think. I hope they make a PS3 version tho, because this looks great and I want a copy!

The good thing about consoles is that you make a game for a very specific hardware, and if it works on one Xbox 360 then it works exactly the same on all Xbox 360ies. On PC, there are so many configurations of hardware and drivers to factor in.

Looking forward to the review of this - I hope it sets the bar really high for Skyrim - if EG says The Witcher is better then I will simply wait for the PS3 version (please!), otherwise I will just have to get both and judge for myself :)

It'd be nice if they made a console version as sadly my PC just isn't up to scratch. It would be nicer still if the PC version was made somewhat scalable as my PC is way more advanced than a 360 but I guess that's kind of a pipe dream.

Yes. This is great news my pc wouldn't be able to run the witcher 2.

    @Shikasama

Yes, "jump and slash" sure got old fast. There seems to be big stick, something I might call a pole if I was not afraid evoking horribly bad puns, in the video, and yes - the wooden stick does not have any pointy bits. It is just a blunt piece of wood. So it is point-less.

They could start early by making a pre-configured Xbox controler input thingie, just hook up a joypad and there you go, without any need for custom settings in order to make it work. This game looks like it could benefit from joypad input, and does not seem to need mouse and keyboard.

I was gutted that the original Witcher never arrived on console so I'm doubly hoping this one does.
  • coomber #11 1 year ago

Me too, Adam. Still hoping it might arrive one day...

Phew, hopefully that means instead of forming out 500 or so euro to make my creaky ol laptop capable of playing the flippin thing, I can just play the waiting game, or hungry hungry hippos, and play it on my creaky ol X360

Once again CD Projekt gets it right. First by steering clear of needless DRM, now by producing a proper, unrushed and well-though out port that makes the most of the target platforms.
Even though I'll be getting this on PC (and not at a bargain for a change because I genuinely want to support these chaps) I hope they manage a really good console version so a) more players can enjoy their product and b) to grant CD projekt some well-deserved additional income.

    Many kudos to them.
