PSN outage is hurting developers

PixelJunk studio is feeling the pinch.

It's not just Sony and its customers who are currently suffering through the widely-publicised PSN outage – developers are starting to hurt too.

Q-Games – the studio behind the PSN-exclusive PixelJunk series – has claimed that the downtime is starting to cost it money.

"PSN being out definitely affects our bottom line," boss Dylan Cuthbert told IndustryGamers, "but as long as the people who were going to be playing Shooter 2 and other PixelJunk titles will get right back in there playing them when it comes back up we'll be happy and hopefully income won't be dented too much."

Cuthbert added that his studio was just as much in the dark about when the service might be back online as the general population.

"Sony has contacted us to let us know they are working as hard as they can 24 hours a day to fully correct and secure the breach," he explained.

"Apart from that we don't know any other information. Fingers crossed they'll get it up and running very soon."

Q-Games' most recent effort, PixelJunk Shooter 2, launched on PlayStation Network last month, scoring 7/10 from Eurogamer's Chris Schilling.

I suppose they would be the real victims here, I can wait to validate my MK online pass etc. But this outage is hurting devs who need the money to stay afloat.

I still believe the circulating rumour that it is fake dev accounts and fake cc numbers being able to download anything that has lead to the shut down.

I hope its this in a sense as it leads to our CC details still being safe.... well as safe as they ever are on an online service.

/goes back to checking my bank details a lot

It's worse - the new Sony Android tablet devices are supposed to use the PSN infrastructure for gaming. The 'It's sunny, I'll go out and play instead' argument won't cut much ice with the iPAD brigade.

It's the customer service angle the bothers me the most - why do huge corporations spend so little effort on even the most basic communication courtesy?
  • coolbritannia #5 1 year ago

I agree dirtysteve. This is what failing to invest in your online infrastructures results in. It messes with the livelihoods of honest, hardworking people.

I wonder where the devs stand in terms of claiming damages from Sony?

What is this nonesense I'm reading!?

First of all, how do you know Sony isn't investing in their online infrastructure?

Second, the devs should be suing the one who actually damaged them i.e the hacker people, not the person whose service was hacked.

What the hell is with this XBL subscription snobbery?

@Steroyd, "First of all, how do you know Sony isn't investing in their online infrastructure?"

Not that I'm saying a lack of investment in the online infrastructure is the main reason for the outage, but lets not be too quick to completely rule poor infrastructure investment.

I feel for Sony I really do. But I am a bit fed up with this now.
I will complain and I will moan, I don't Care if PSN is free (I'm subscriber) they made that decision and it's pretty integral to the console and people have a right to complain free or not.

Sony IMHO have failed so much on this generation:
    PSN store lack lustre
Lack of or losing exclusives, less or late DLC.
    Backwards comp.
Removal of USB card reader ports.
    Linux removal.
Multi platform releases generally look better on the bitch box.
PSone Games on EU store sub par compared to the us/jap store.
    In game chat flakey.

The above list is what matters to me and are a fail for me. I love the PS3 but its not without some glaring problems I feel.

What about that recent exploit that gave away free MS points?

Oh right sorry, Live's a beacon of security.

This shit happens to both sides, it's about how they deal with it that matters and what Sony aren't telling anyone is the real problem here.

Yes, after all failure to anticipate growing demand (after the launch of Gears and Modern Warfare I think) was what caused Xbox Live to go down for five whole days in 2007.

Anyway, it sucks that it's down, but the weather is great and it would be pretty sad if we can't do without PSN for a few days. Though on the other hand perhaps that would also be a compliment to PSN, that it is at least good enough to be missed. ;)

Hope it will be back up tomorrow night, and perhaps they'll give away a free game. Heck perhaps that's even what PixelJunk is asking for - please pick our game to give away for free Sony, so we have some guaranteed sales. ;)

Sony's revenue from PSN in 2010 was around $870,000,000. I know revenue won't be equally split each week, and revenue is expected to be up in 2011 compared to 2010 but for the sake of argument divide that by 52 = $16,730,769. That's a fair bit of revenue to lose in a week. I don't know how the revenue splits between Sony and other studios such as Q-Games.

@Arwin, "Though on the other hand perhaps that would also be a compliment to PSN, that it is at least good enough to be missed. ;)"

Of course, most of he true PS3 fans are going to great lengths to explain how it's no big deal, the weather is great and that some are even saying that hadn't noticed until 'they read about it'. ;)

    @randompanda

I don't recall MS shutting Live down for days on end. And before anyone cites the issues over Xmas 2007 on Live, they were intermittent. Outages lasted for minutes not days.

I'm not saying it one way or the other, what I'm asking is how the hell could you tell if Sony's investment in their infrastructure is poor or excellent.
  • rotmm #15 1 year ago

    @Steroyd,

I was just yanking your chain, as I remembered a post by earlier this morning where you said something like, "I'm not saying it was someone from anonymous, but let's not be too quick to rule them out" :p
  • randompanda #16 1 year ago

Rod, it's not a competition - it's pointing out that this stuff does tend to break, no matter how much money is thrown at it.

Given that Sony have just admitted everyone's information has been compromised, I think it's hurting customers as well.

Well done for letting us know so quickly, Sony.

    Thanks for that.

At least we have some info now:

The latest information on the PlayStation Network service outage.

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. The following email has been sent to all PSN registrants; please read the help and support FAQ for more information.

    Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

    1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

    2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

    3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity passwords and login and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at uk.playstation.com/psnoutage should you have any additional questions.

    Sincerely,
Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment Teams

YA - I'm tired of all the wa wa wa stories about psn/ps3 not costing anything like X-Box live - KMA!!! I have a vast investment in three ps3 units tons of games and all the controllers etc that go with gaming. This is costing me & i'm sick of it. Sony's silence is DEAFENING if you ask me.

Hackers, maybe! Sony's own administrative management, probably! Get your crap together Sony & get the show on the road.

    My investment is idle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time to be checking those credit card statements then...
  • bwiancohen #21 1 year ago

Sure...I have missed PSN but the most important thing for me is that the network is safe, secure and that my info isnt in the wrong hands. Im happy for Sony to take as long as they want on this (in fact looking at the most recent report it has been handed to a specialist company). I was worried about my card info being used but I opted to just cancel my cards and get new ones in a few days.....its not a major inconvenience and one that has to be done every now and again anyway. I subscribe to PSPlus but again Im not too worried about a week or two (or more) down. I have managed to fill my time with other things - I even managd to plaster a wall the other day which the girl friend has been whining at me to do for a year :)
  • RodHull #22 1 year ago

    @randompanda

Agreed, it's not a competition but it's very difficult not to draw comparisons. Thanks to mouthpieces such as Major Nelson, MS kept Live users informed of the progress of fixes to issues several times a day. Sony have remained resolutely faceless and unhelpful throughout their problems and that's what grates with me the most. Thus far there have been 4 updates on the Playstation blog, each saying as little as the preceding one.
