EU PlayStation Network down

UPDATE: "Down for maintenance."

UPDATE: SCEE has tweeted to say the PSN is "currently down for maintenance". "We'll update you with timeframes as soon as we can," the company said.

ORIGINAL STORY: The European PlayStation Network is currently inaccessible.

We can't log in, anyway. Can you?

Reports are coming in that the PSN is down in the US, too. Is this a global issue?

We've contacted Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for comment.

They don't even need Anonymous to bring the PSN down.

Well, at least Anonymous said they wouldn't attack PSN anymore... and they sure seem legit
  • captain_ginge #5 1 year ago

Seems to be down all over the place
    Anonymous attack??
  • TheEarlOfZinger #6 1 year ago

    It was Geohotz etc
  • KrazyFace #7 1 year ago

HAHAHAHA! I lkie it! Anonymous go on about "we'll get yer back, nyarf, nyarf, nyarf" and when something does go wrong they get the blame! I guess you shouldn't cry wolf...

It takes all of 10 seconds to go to playstation.com and notice that it says PSN is 'Offline' with a little red light next to it. So yes, EG, it's offline for everyone.
  • sega #20 1 year ago

Haha @elephant_stone - Skynet went online about 14 years ago but I suppose the PS1 wouldn't have been much of a hacking oppertunity.
  • Caimbeul #21 1 year ago

Seems to go down for unannounced maintenence quie of ten does the PSN.
  • jablonski #22 1 year ago

What's so wrong with this article?
It's relevant, not many facts are available, but still worth flagging in case it turns into something.

    People moan about anything

@sega - today is the exact date that Skynet takes over actually

I'm pretty sure Sony normally announce when PSN is going down for maintenance. For it to suddenly go offline worldwide with no notice makes me wonder what the real reason is...
  • Huntcjna #26 1 year ago

Down for unannounced maintenance. Worldwide. Really. Pull the other one Sony its got bells on.
  • oklahoma-killa #27 1 year ago

the network for all of playstation is down here in oklahoma usa. i know i've seen plenty on a group of hackers called anonymous that was suppose to hack into the netwok and take it down. but don't know if its true or not.

Sometimes things go wrong. Yeah it happens in the real world people, move along.
  • drxym #29 1 year ago

I got an error last night when I tried to log in but then I got in at the second attempt. Could be glitches from Steam or idiots from Anonymous pissing around with it.
  • GamesConnoisseur #30 1 year ago

SDF: please! Trying to make this as a non story, if MS did the same, I would expect questions to be asked. I m PSN+ subscriber and my service is being interrupted.

Not announced is pretty poor, i would expect some downtimes sure, but would appreicate being warned and secondly, if this was unplanned and due to hackings, then this is a story too. As Anon thugs promised to leave PSN users alone? If it was tech faults then again, its as much a story as X360 RROD. The frequencies of these faults being so noted.

People may choose not to care and thats fine, but i m gonna be concerned if a good proportion of my subscribed service goes nowhere.

You need to get some perspective.
  • Machetazo #32 1 year ago

I vote "unscheduled", since this reaction, today, goes a long way towards explaining the service's behaviour, yesterday.
  • DozyKipper #33 1 year ago

Shucks. I need multiplayer action. I've got cold toikey.
  • Eighthours #34 1 year ago

Sigh. Every time PSN gets a bit glitchy now, we're going to think that Anonymous did it. And hey, I'm going to join the party! Even though they said they wouldn't target PSN anymore, given the hilarious failure of their Sony store stunts a few days ago it's not beyond the realms of possibility that they've switched tactics again.
  • M_of_the_sys #35 1 year ago

Is it a leap year again already?
  • icematt12 #36 1 year ago

Well, I downloaded updates for Killzone 3 and Home overnight using PS+ and downloaded 1.02 for Modern Combat Domination like 2 minutes ago.

I would rather companies come out honest. The tech used are complicated and things can and do go wrong, they earn my respect more being open about the issue than coming out with bull like maintenance.

    EDIT - Caps Lock fail

PSN was down the whole weekend here in South Africa and I couldn't access any of the websites either, eu, za or usa. Logged in last night though all the websites running over here at the moment too. It all happened on the damn day I got my new router too, leaving me in thinking that is was due to the router. So I spend a good amount of time forwarding ports and such, before I tried to open the websites on my PC to see if PSN was down. Doh!
  • coolbritannia #38 1 year ago

It's a shame Sony still lie to their customers over stuff like this, Major Nelson would have posted something by now admitting there was a fault.

That said, PSN is free, so you can't really complain.
  • patch #39 1 year ago

I was trying to log onto the web based PSN all day yesterday (uk.playstation.com, killzone.com etc.) and couldn't get in. Was fine using shop & downloading yesterday, left PS3 on downloading (set to shut down automatically) and it stopped 9% into Pain.

I'm guessing this is unplanned as they're usually pretty good with up-front notifications, plus I saw nothing on the issues I had yesterday.

Annoyingly this affects Qriocity as well, the website still works but you can't login. Not good for a paid service, how often does iTunes or Zune go down for maintenance?

Also, given that Sony are pushing using the PSN login for more things you would think login servers would be independent. Microsoft don't take down the whole passport system when doing maintenance on xbox live.
  • DeanDMX #44 1 year ago

Timing maintenance with the launch of a major game. Good thinking Sony.
  • jamiewillz #45 1 year ago

wtf that gotta do wiv this blog
  • RodHull #46 1 year ago

I upgraded to PS yesterday and planned to download my freebies this morning. Cheers Sony!
  • mss99 #47 1 year ago

What annoys me is that planned or un-planned these outages always occur around the day the store updates. With the bank holiday weekend looming I hope this is sorted quickly.
  • GamesProgrammer Verified Games Team Programmer, Eutechnyx Ltd. #48 1 year ago

Portal has just arrived will get home to play it in 6 hours, sort it out before then please Sony.
  • sega #49 1 year ago

@jablonski - how could skynet go online today when the opening line to Terminator 2 was '3 billion human lives ended on August 29 1997'. Unless you're going by the latest film or something but I say only the first 2 count. End geek rant.

  • Darren #52 1 year ago

Love the way Sony never bother to notify its users ahead of time about planned maintenance like Microsoft do. That's just unforgiveable IMO, especially as you never know until you check whether PSN is genuinely down or just undergoing maintenance. How about showing a little bit of courtesy toward your users, Sony? It doesn't take much effort as it can all be automated? Ask Microsoft if you can't work out to do it? :p
  • Architect_z #53 1 year ago

O well, good weather today, i'm off to the park. ^_^
  • oldschoolsoviet #54 1 year ago

PSN has been sketchy over the past week, to say the least. Numerous attempts to log in, with no guaranteed sucess, random error codes with failed attempts, trophy sync problems etc. Whether it's an after-effect of Anon or others with DDOS attacks, or yet another bug that's been rumoured affecting network stability, or just gremlins, who knows ?

If the maintenance sorts all this out, and it's back to normal, it's about time. I'll even be patient with the inevitable following update.
  • FlipC #55 1 year ago

Socom 4 and Portal 2 released today and someone decides this is the best time to do maintenance on the servers... yeah totally buying that Sony.
  • jonbwfc #56 1 year ago

@dfua "Annoyingly this affects Qriocity as well, the website still works but you can't login. Not good for a paid service, how often does iTunes or Zune go down for maintenance? "

Odd coincidence (or possibly not) - the iTunes Music Store was actually partially down last night. You could browse around, but if you tried to buy anything it rejected your password. May still be affected, haven't tried today. That's happened a couple of times since Christmas.

Just got posted on the sony blog

As you are no doubt aware, the current emergency outage is continuing this afternoon and all Sony Online Network services remain unavailable. Our support teams are investigating the cause of the problem, including the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party. If the reported Network problems are indeed caused by such acts, we would like to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service.
Our engineers are continuing to work to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers’ continued support. For further information, please refer to updates on PlayStation.com, here on PlayStation.Blog and via our @PlayStationEU twitter feed.

oh great, does this mean Anon are at it again... on portal release day? If it is them they pretty much just f*cked themselves royally....

They are referencing the "Sarah Connor Chronicles" which are apparently official cannon. They pushed the date back to today with some funky time travelling, malarky

  • DannyXanny #60 1 year ago

PSBlog: While we are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert you that it may be a full day or two before we’re able to get the service completely back up and running.
