God of War 4 out September 2012 – report

UK mag cites source close to GOW universe.

God of War 4 will launch in September 2012, a UK game magazine has claimed.

PSM3 (via CVG) attributed its information to a source who "works closely with the God of War universe".

Last month a job advertisement suggested developer Sony Santa Monica might implement multiplayer into the God of War series.

God of War III launched early last year as a visual showcase for the PlayStation 3.

Sony Santa Monica has said it did not mark the end of the action-packed blockbuster series.

"This is not the end of God of War," studio boss John Hight said. "This is definitely the end of the trilogy, but we're [going to] continue to do God of War games.

"We're [going to] be very careful about what we do. We're the keepers of the franchise and we don't want to see it ruined or polluted."

The PlayStation 3 exclusive enjoyed a 9/10 in Eurogamer's God of War III review, in which Christian Donlan wrote: "There are no branching paths, no complex decisions, and no multiplayer modes, but this particular game is all the better for it, since the results are rich and focused rather than drawn-out and a little ragged."

    Awesome! Loved GOW3 :-)

    Perhaps they could do with making a few changes to the formula to stop it getting stale but whether it's more Kratos or a new character, can't wait!

    They really have to mix it up gameplay wise if this is the case. 3 was good fun, but it was pretty much 2 with weaker gameplay and better graphics.

    As a fan of the series I Was hoping they would have leave this behind. Any extension will probably be a bit of a cash-in.

    God of War 3 was epic, I will gladly play another game. The gameplay has always been consistent in the games, but it's the amazing story that has kept me entertained across 3 platforms. Hopefully this new title will have an equally entertaining (or better) one.

    It might be seen as a GOW clone, but I would love to see Santa Monica Studio make a Hercules game in the same universe following him through his Twelve Labours. They could get Kevin Sorbo back to voice Kratos' half sibling, the same for Zeus and any other returning Gods.

    With all the sex Kratos had over the course of three games (I haven't played the PSP games) he's bound to have produced an offspring... Bring it on Kratos Jr.!

    there was clues in 3 that kratos twin brother would be the protagonist in god of war 4. quote me on that!

    They really ought to wait and have it as a launch title for PlayStation 4. Surely that will be out by holiday 2013 so they could hold it back for a year.

    Deimos is Kratos' younger brother. I think references to him in GOW3 were there to relate to the events of Ghost Of Sparta. Similar to Hades talking about the murder of his wife (Persephone) at the hands of Kratos, which happened in Chains Of Olympus.

    All the greek gods are dead, though... Which culture's heros and gods will be crushed by an inexplicably powerful sociopath next?

    I suppose the Roman gods are an option, but it would be a bit samey. Maybe Norse gods? Kratos vs Thor, Baldur and Odin would be pretty cool.

    Or how about christianity? See Kratos re-write the bible as he battles through the 12 disciples to finally nail Jesus to the cross with the bones of Mary and Joseph..

    What for, Kratos? You started killing everyone and then got smacked down for it. It was fair enough, you were being an idiot, so what are you trying to get revenge for? I was really hoping that Kratos might gain a bit of self-understanding in GOW3 and realise that he'd been an utter cock throughout games 2 and 3, but sadly not.

    Since they said that Kratos trilogy is over I would love to see the franchise going north and focusing on the Norse Gods.

    Kratos is a bad joke, a teen-angster dream.
    He forgot the purpose of its fight a long time ago.
    He should just be put down like the ravenous dog he is.
    GoW3 is a disgrace, a wasted oportunity...

    I have enjoyed the few 'GoW-clones' such Castlevania:LoS & Darksiders.
    So why have I not been taken by the God of War series (I have tried GoW 1 and GoW 3 demo),

    @Darkphoenix: I don't think the games are a waste of time - I actually really love the GOW series - but the script and motivation for Kratos in 2 and 3 is absolutely dire.

    I really had a huge amount of sympathy for him in GOW1, it's a brilliant tragic arc that his character endures, but in 2 and 3 he's like a stroppy teenager who's drunk on White Lightning on a Friday night. I still love the gameplay and the spectacle, but the narrative is very poor.

    Yes, I'm in the same boat as you.
    I really loved GoW, and enjoyed GoW2 for being a great technical achievement although its script was vastly inferior to the original.

    The game I really disliked playing as Kratos was GoW3.
    Kratos had become a bully, hurting everything and everyone.
    ...so much violence and torture in the name of what?!?
    What was he trying to prove?
    -You mess with me, I destroy everything?

    Is that it?

    He ended up betraying everything its character stood for in the original game, wich was taking control of his own life from the hands of the gods, mainly from Ares.
    He ended up being the enemy of the entire planet, washed away and crushed in his raging madness.

    I don't get all the hate, GOW3 was my joint GOTY last year and I played some fantastic games in 2010. Yes Kratos is a psychopathic seething pile of inhumanity but if you follow the plot there's a reason for his less than jovial disposition.

    God of war 3 is the best game in the series for me I loved it and I can't wait to see what Santa Monica do with 4.
