SSFIV Arcade Edition PC a "just cause"

Capcom: PC gamers "back in the family".

Capcom has described the release of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition on PC as a "just cause".

At its Captivate event Capcom ended months of speculation when it confirmed the launch of a PC version of the game.

It had looked unlikely. Last year producer Yoshinori Ono said Capcom were put off of releasing the game on PC after Street Fighter IV suffered from piracy – despite a compatible version being 99 per cent complete.

But Capcom had given PC gamers a glimmer of hope when in January the company's US boss said he was "cautiously optimistic" that Super Street Fighter IV PC would materialise.

Now it's a reality, Capcom has told Eurogamer it's delighted to welcome PC gamers "back in the family".

"I don't want to call it fan service, but I'll say there's a multi-thousand page thread on the Ask Capcom section of Unity that haunts me all the time," Capcom's fighting game guru Seth Killian said.

"Why no Super Street Fighter IV on PC? I always felt bad because I never really had a great answer to it. There are all sorts of internal complications that result in different situations, so when we knew we were going to be able to do that we were really happy.

"I know there are a lot of people who play on PC. That's their platform of choice and they want to be involved.

"Also, there are a lot of things you can do on a PC that are more difficult on a console. I'm just happy those guys are going to be back in the family.

"It's a vocal minority, but the whole world is made up of nothing but vocal minorities. We're all part of a vocal minority.

"It was a just cause. We're in a lucky position of having people who are passionate about having access to our games on the platform they play on. We want to make that happen as often as we can. It's not usually as simple as we wish it was, but I'm really happy and it's going to be a great version."

While Killian was unable to reveal recommended or minimum specifications for the PC version, he did say it'll run on a wide variety of machines.

"I do not have an ultra powerful PC and I've got it running and it runs great," he said. My work PC is definitely no powerhouse, and it's running it fine."

The launch of Arcade Edition on PC is part of Capcom's wider push on the PC platform.

It intends to launch PC versions of Street Fighter x Tekken and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.

SSFIV Arcade Edition PC a "piece of piss to convert from the already Windows-based arcade original"

Capcom do a pretty good job on PC really.

I'd avoided Street Fighter IV until now as I guessed there would be some kind of 'definitive package'. This is close enough - I'll be buying.

Anyone know what DRM, if any, is about?
  • MrEuroTrigger #5 10 months ago

Well done Capcom! First Lost Planet 1, Dark Void, then Lost Planet 2, now this. No doubt that Dragons Dogma will come out for PC too!

@nuanimal: If not GfWL, there will be Steam for sure, preventing people from selling the game after finishing, but I don´t mind this anymore.

Considering the Steam version of SF4 sold and continues to sell really well it always astonished me that they didn't want to put Super SF4 on at very least Steam. That would eliminate the piracy thing at little, because it's just too damn convenient to setup quick matches between friends.

Great news but, the thing is, I'd be tempted to pirate it if it has DRM on it. I can't see why legitimate customers get punished with DRM whilst the pirates get a version with no restrictions. Do the right thing, Capcom, and don't punish your legitimate customers.

    Hello macro combos!

What they should do is cross-platform.

Blazblue did it, SSF should do it too.

Great to hear. Plus Capcom are just about the only dev nowadays that say not a powerhouse and don't mean "It's only got 8gb Ram, an i7 extreme quad core and a GTX 580"

Great. Day one purchase if it doesn't have some bad DRM and if it works offline.

Very much agreed. It would definitely help with the longevity of the game. Unfortunately, that won't happen. GFWL does not support it, Steamworks does not exist to Capcom, and a proprietary system would take far too much effort than they would like.

Hm, Blazblue has GFWL and crossplatform works, doesn't it?
It's only sitting on my shelf now for some time, cause everyone's too strong for me online but I think it worked nicely?

I'm happy it's coming, the news it was coming was spoilt slightly though with the confirmation of SFxT at the same time. Realising they shouldn't have said anything they are now neither denying or confirming it's coming.

With X360, yeah. I guess that would be good enough, I am just setting expectations too high.
  • 5h1nj1 #16 10 months ago

Oh, right. It's Microsoft we're talking about, isn't. :) They would probably all commit ritual suicides if it would work crossplatform with Sony products.

Excellent stuff. As a person who relies on their laptop due to attending university at the other end of the country (where I do not have my consoles), this reaffirmation of Capcom's stance has made my day.
