Mass Effect 3 details - no multiplayer
Expanded RPG elements, weapon mods.
There will be no multiplayer in Mass Effect 3, BioWare has apparently revealed.
Multiplayer will, however, be considered for future games and spin-offs, according to new details lifted from the latest issue of Game Informer (read by NeoGAF).
Mass Effect 3 will offer more than one bad ending and more than one good ending, depending on the turns your personal story makes. Your choice of companions also affects the outcome.
The RPG elements of Mass Effect are being expanded for the third game. Skill trees will be larger, and powers can evolve several times. In Mass Effect 2 there were only four tiers of skill advancement.
Weapon mods return, not quite to the degree of Mass Effect 1 - but there's the option to swap scopes, barrels, etc. This affects not only the behaviour of the weapon, but also its appearance.
All weapons can apparently be used by all classes now, too, although only the soldier will be able to pack all options at once.
Characters returning in Mass Effect 3 include love interests Liara T'Soni, Kaidan Alenko and Ashley Williams. Squad members Garrus, Wrex, Mordin and Legion are pencilled in (providing they didn't die), as is Anderson. Whether these old faces can be recruited remains to be seen.
James Sanders - a possible offspring of Mass Effect novel heroine Kahlee Sanders - can also apparently join your team.
Mass Effect 3 starts as Shepard stands trial for his actions in recent ME3 DLC Arrival. Part-way through the hearing the Reapers invade earth. Mass Effect 3's prologue involves Shepard escaping to the Normandy, before rocketing off to put the old team back together. He'll fight Reaper-controlled husks of all species along the way.
Like Mass Effect 2 on PS3, the third game packs an interactive digital comic to both backfill the story as well as take your input on key series decisions.
Enigmatic Mass Effect 2 patron the Illusive Man also returns, his Cerberus operation now tasked with killing Shepard. Why the Illusive Man has turned the tables on his former champion remains to be seen.
Interestingly, BioWare has also denied any multiplayer for Mass Effect 3. It's a feature for future games or spin-offs, apparently.

Is it really so important to report that a blatantly single player RPGs that have no logical need or space for multiplayer elements have no multiplayer elements? Christ.

@peteb: I guess Miranda will be a "bad guy" in this one, which is pretty awesome anyway. Especially since I nailed her, bring on the dramatic tension!

This is most interesting bit to me, having played ME1 two and a half times and still not having finished ME2. Anything that makes it feel more like an RPG is good news to me.
And, just to be clear, is this still the final part to a trilogy? i.e. this will conclude the Mass Effect story?

Mass Effect 2 is way longer than Mass Effect 1. Even with the more streamlined travel options. It took me 38 hours to complete Mass Effect 2 the first time, whilst Mass Effect 1 never broke twenty hours even on a complete playthrough.
I’m a fan of both games, but I prefer the main story in 1 and the ancillary stories in 2. The world and universe feels more vibrant in the sequel, but the main story sort of plods along a little (not helped by the fact that the main story missions are hatefully difficult at times). I’m kind of hoping that Mass Effect 3 focuses more on the main plot and really delivers a satisfying conclusion.
I also quite like how it seems all three games in the series will play slightly different

Rather not have it and they focus on what has made the series awesome. Too many games with tacked on multiplayer.

As for the rest of the article, a spoiler warning might be an idea, given that the headline doesn't really trail any of the plot details.
Still, this news has made my Friday.

Like the news about more RPG elements. I liked the ones in 2 but after the second playthrough I felt that maybe they were lacking somewhat.
Bring it on.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else but me? ME2 perhaps? Okay now we have to fight husks of all species, but really? The party members all seem so keen to join Sheperd in a jaunt to take down an evil menace, but why don't they stick together until the job is done, i.e. Reapers defeated? Does everyone in the team secretly hate each other or something?

Best news I've heard all day
As for the characters returning, that's pretty much what I expected - mostly made up of the previous two games, with a couple (maybe 2-3) new faces to scratch our recruitment itch.
Also:
"Enigmatic Mass Effect 2 patron the Illusive Man also returns, his Cerberus operation now tasked with killing Shepard. Why the Illusive Man has turned the tables on his former champion remains to be seen."
Well, he was pretty pissed when I blew the Collector base and told Miranda to stop me. I'm guessing that's the 'canon decision', just like letting the council die in ME1. Still, him trying to kill Shepard because he did something the IM didn't like is a bit petty, considering advancing humanity is his main goal, and Shepard is the best way to do that.
I did always wonder whether the IM was legit though. Those eyes.
This is going to be so good! I can't wait!

I just hope it doesn't take up as much game time this time around, recruiting them all quickly would also aid the sense of urgency.

In fact, somewhere in the future of remakes, I know ME2 will be left on the cutting floor, nothing more than a stall after the first game.

That is correct, sir.
The Alliance is still no match for a single Reapper ( one that doesn't put its life and energy on Siren's body, that is ), and there are millions just waiting outside the galaxy.
So, ME2 should've been all about searching for some ultimate weapon or cosmical power, so that in the third game we could have a chance of fighting the bastards.
Will Sheppard witness Earth's destruction?
I bloody hope so, as punishment for ME2.

It was to defeat the Collectors .
I suspect that ME3 will have you recuiting civilizations to join the fight, rather than just getting indivuduals. This could be why Wrex will be back (if you didn't kill him), if he is now leader, then you'll have him bring his armies to the fight (might be a little easier to recruit the Krogen if Wrex is alive than if he is not)
Maybe Legion will help you get the remaining Geth on your side as well.

There's no way to physically confront the Reapers and survive.
Maybe Sheppard discovers some kind of lost techo-organic virus that disrupts the Reapers from the inside.
Maybe Sheppard becomes a god-like creature.
Maybe maybe....
The balance of the universe requires that everyone and everything has both its powers and its weaknesses.
Yin and Yang, always.
The Reapers do have a weakness, it'll be up to Sheppard to find out what it is.

Do you really think thats a good idea to keep the ME2 squad? Bioware still wants to cater to new players (though hopefully nowhere near as much as ME2 did) and starting with a full squad already is just stupid.
Not to mention its pointless from a story perspective. How much progression and expansion would it limit if you were stuck with the same team from ME2?
Besides, they were all pretty much mercenaries anyway. At least in ME1, and hopefully ME3 you are more "brought together" by events. In ME2 you were basically handed a shopping list that said "recruit these people".
In short, if like me youve been waiting to properly reunite with Liara in a full squaddie role in game, and finally reunite with Ashley/Kaidan, hooray for us, Biowares promise paid off. If youre one of the lucky ones whose favourite character transfers over (Garrus), lucky you. Just be thankful you havent had to have them sit out a game. If youre one whos favourite character might not make it in as a squaddie (like at this stage possibly Tali, although nothing is certain yet) hard luck old bean. Now you get to bask in the disappointment that Liara, Ash/Kai and Wrex fans felt in ME2, when you quite possibly didnt give a shit because you were too busy caring about Garrus, Tali or one of the new characters.

They were old faces, but not much of their old character carried over.
They were doing new things, and most of their character revolved around "fuhk me furry, or listen to my calibrations/engine cleaning".
Mind you, most characters fed you stupid "busy lines" for most of the game anyway.
Hopefully weve seen the last of that crap from Bioware.
What they could do is say created between 5-10 short conversations that pop up randomly when you talk to them, with an extra 5 or so for if you romance them (keeping alive the idea that the two are in some kind of relationship more than just in the specific conversations).
At least that way for the first few times you visit them youve got a nice few fresh interesting conversations that pop up randomly. It wouldnt last forever, but first impressions are important. I bet if people werent confronted by "calibrations" so early and had a few random conversations before it came up, people wouldnt have been so bothered by them.

Aside from these niggles, Mass Effect 3 looks very promising so far. I think much more emphasis will be placed on recruiting races to help Earth as opposed to recruiting crew members. My guess is that some of these races will require you to perform missions for them before they help you. Obviously leaving Wrex alive will make it easier to recruit the Krogan race and letting the Rachni queen live will give Shepard another ally. All in all it should be excellent, so long as Bioware manage to maintain a sense of urgency throughout.

Cereberus hunting Shep down suits me, haven't forgiven them from stuff they did in ME1. Considering all my characters will blow up the Collector base, take Miranda so she quits and pretty much tell TIM I'm going my own way, not suprising Cerberus want blood.
More familiar faces the better, very noticeable playing PS3 version of ME2 after playing 360 version several times. Legion can be a contact for getting Geth help, if they and the Quarians aren't busy fighting each other. Similar role for a certain krogan.
I personally argue this is a trial not suitable for the Alliance. Firstly, wan't a sanctioned mission for them. Second, it's more than a human matter. After all, Shep kinda disintergrates 300,000 batarians. More like a Council matter. Thirdly, Shep can be a Spectre so unless there is at least one Council member on Earth the trial can be pointless. I can hope the Turian one is there, dismiss this bitch when the reapers arrive.

Personally I couldn't care less about Ashley or Kaiden, so I hope I'm forced to squad up with one of them again.
But I WANT Thane, Mordin, Legion, Tali and Liara as squadies. Anyone else is a bonus, but I'd be gutted if at least Thane and Mordin didn't return.
