Mass Effect 3 details - no multiplayer

Expanded RPG elements, weapon mods.

There will be no multiplayer in Mass Effect 3, BioWare has apparently revealed.

Multiplayer will, however, be considered for future games and spin-offs, according to new details lifted from the latest issue of Game Informer (read by NeoGAF).

Mass Effect 3 will offer more than one bad ending and more than one good ending, depending on the turns your personal story makes. Your choice of companions also affects the outcome.

The RPG elements of Mass Effect are being expanded for the third game. Skill trees will be larger, and powers can evolve several times. In Mass Effect 2 there were only four tiers of skill advancement.

Weapon mods return, not quite to the degree of Mass Effect 1 - but there's the option to swap scopes, barrels, etc. This affects not only the behaviour of the weapon, but also its appearance.

All weapons can apparently be used by all classes now, too, although only the soldier will be able to pack all options at once.

Characters returning in Mass Effect 3 include love interests Liara T'Soni, Kaidan Alenko and Ashley Williams. Squad members Garrus, Wrex, Mordin and Legion are pencilled in (providing they didn't die), as is Anderson. Whether these old faces can be recruited remains to be seen.

James Sanders - a possible offspring of Mass Effect novel heroine Kahlee Sanders - can also apparently join your team.

Mass Effect 3 starts as Shepard stands trial for his actions in recent ME3 DLC Arrival. Part-way through the hearing the Reapers invade earth. Mass Effect 3's prologue involves Shepard escaping to the Normandy, before rocketing off to put the old team back together. He'll fight Reaper-controlled husks of all species along the way.

Like Mass Effect 2 on PS3, the third game packs an interactive digital comic to both backfill the story as well as take your input on key series decisions.

Enigmatic Mass Effect 2 patron the Illusive Man also returns, his Cerberus operation now tasked with killing Shepard. Why the Illusive Man has turned the tables on his former champion remains to be seen.

Interestingly, BioWare has also denied any multiplayer for Mass Effect 3. It's a feature for future games or spin-offs, apparently.

Mass Effect 3.

Fortunately, they're not coming back in my game. I hope.

How is no multiplayer a reveal? Was anyone expecting it? Note how in the Neogaf post it comes at the end... on EG it's the bloody headline :/
  • Ultrasoundwave #6 1 year ago

Dead Space 2 proved that shoe-horned multiplayer just isnt worth the effort. Saying that, they shoe-horned MP in Uncharted 2 and i think thats excellent..........

i dont know what to think

Sounds to me like a ME1 and ME2 love child, which is just about the best thing they could of done.
  • bodypopper #8 1 year ago

Loved ME2 but for the side missions which were buggy as hell on the 360. Almost as if they gave them to a 'workie'.
  • PlugMonkey #9 1 year ago

The only reason I would want to see Ashley Williams back again is if she's morphed into Bruce Campbell's Ashley Williams from Evil Dead.

If she's going to come back from the grave, she might as well bring some Deadites with her.

I'm more interested to see how DLC-announce heavy this game will be.
DA2 seemed to be the most awful example of this.

Oh, and also can't wait for the retailer specific pre-order bonuses.
  • makememoo #11 1 year ago

Oh wow, what a shock after the news that Skyrim won't have multiplayer.

Is it really so important to report that a blatantly single player RPGs that have no logical need or space for multiplayer elements have no multiplayer elements? Christ.
  • linea #12 1 year ago

That sounds mostly very good. Slightly worried that it'll be structurally similar to Mass Effect 2 though.... not sure the urgency of the Reapers bumming Earth is going to work with the bumbling around doing loyalty missions and side-quests aspect (though to be fair that's always been a bit of a problem with Bioware games.... the need to URGENTLY PREVENT CALAMITY.... just as soon as you sort out this guy's problem with a rat infestation....)

Thank fuck I killed Kaidan! Great to see Legion getting in there somewhere, he was awesome. And nice to see a bit of a tie in with the books if that does happen to be Kahlee's son.

    Cannot wait.

@peteb: I guess Miranda will be a "bad guy" in this one, which is pretty awesome anyway. Especially since I nailed her, bring on the dramatic tension!

The RPG elements are being beefed up, not going back to ME1, but giving more freedom with the character skills. Skill trees will be larger, and powers will evolve several times instead of just once, offering even more freedom. Weapons are ME2 style, with a set list, but mods make a return, not in the ME1 style, but allowing you to swap out different parts such as barrels, scopes, and so on, which effect both the weapon's combat performance and its appearance.

This is most interesting bit to me, having played ME1 two and a half times and still not having finished ME2. Anything that makes it feel more like an RPG is good news to me.

And, just to be clear, is this still the final part to a trilogy? i.e. this will conclude the Mass Effect story?
  • LHH #18 1 year ago

yet more Kaidan and Ashley. One's boring, the other's a massive racist.

i tho rite? Who've thought there would be characters with actual character traits!
  • the_inchworm #19 1 year ago

Gah! The horror! I had the perfect ME2 save bar one detail - a dead Mordrin. Aside from that I had recruited Morinth, got my Kelly-gram, grabbed Liara's ass - everything. I was secretly hoping I wouldn't need to replay all of ME2 *again* just to keep Mordrin alive, but now.... /sigh... here we go again.

Oh good god, it sounds like its going to be the best of the three how disappointing. I hate it when games producers create these amazing games, I must rant and hate everything because it'll be the most amazing thing I will ever play. Rah, hate, everything sucks. Err... yeah, that.
  • DozyKipper #21 1 year ago

Yes, I would have been well muffed if Legion wasn't back.

I bet he does a Neo at the end and sacrifices himself to save the universe from the reapers.

The end shot of the game will be a dodgy coloured sunset.

‘Hack half the features and length’

Mass Effect 2 is way longer than Mass Effect 1. Even with the more streamlined travel options. It took me 38 hours to complete Mass Effect 2 the first time, whilst Mass Effect 1 never broke twenty hours even on a complete playthrough.

I’m a fan of both games, but I prefer the main story in 1 and the ancillary stories in 2. The world and universe feels more vibrant in the sequel, but the main story sort of plods along a little (not helped by the fact that the main story missions are hatefully difficult at times). I’m kind of hoping that Mass Effect 3 focuses more on the main plot and really delivers a satisfying conclusion.

I also quite like how it seems all three games in the series will play slightly different

I would be surprised if Miranda didnt make a reappearance or indeed any of the possible love interests from ME2 as Im sure there will be argument between lover from the first game and lover from the second.
  • michaelius #29 1 year ago

Glad to hear it isn as "streamlined" as ME2 was.
  • qoobah #30 1 year ago

So glad they're bringing some of the old squad back (Ashley!) as I didn't care much for the crew in ME2. Also happy with more RPG elements. Bah! Can't be more hyped for this, and we're like 8 months before release.

The long wait... Just gotta be careful not to spoil the story watching trailers ;)
  • Master09 #31 1 year ago

    No multiplayer! Yay!

Rather not have it and they focus on what has made the series awesome. Too many games with tacked on multiplayer.

  • tyrant1 #33 1 year ago

Never thought Id say this after ME2, but.... GOOD NEWS! Things actually sound GOOD for me as an RPG player who enjoys that side of ME2 more!

    Plus!

ASHLEY! KAIDAN! LIARA! UNBELEIVABLE! IVE waited AGES to united those two variations of that pair of characters! AT SODDING LAST!

    ALSO NO MULTIPLAYER!!! WOOHOO!

Its all worth the embarassment of overusing caps!

Oh, thank god. Thank god for no multiplayer. With this, Skyrim and Arkham City, I am at last getting a sense that EA's ludicrous 'single player is dead' sentiments a few months back might not have done any lasting damage.

As for the rest of the article, a spoiler warning might be an idea, given that the headline doesn't really trail any of the plot details.

Still, this news has made my Friday.
  • Zebula77 #35 1 year ago

Cannot wait for this. Dunno if I wanna import my evil male character or my good female character tho. I'll probably do both. :p

Like the news about more RPG elements. I liked the ones in 2 but after the second playthrough I felt that maybe they were lacking somewhat.

    Bring it on.
  • Phantom_Dynamite #36 1 year ago

I hope Conrad Verner is still nocking about.
  • teh_MBK #37 1 year ago

"...before rocketing off to put the old team back together. He'll fight Reaper-controlled husks of all species along the way."

Does this sound familiar to anyone else but me? ME2 perhaps? Okay now we have to fight husks of all species, but really? The party members all seem so keen to join Sheperd in a jaunt to take down an evil menace, but why don't they stick together until the job is done, i.e. Reapers defeated? Does everyone in the team secretly hate each other or something?
  • kinky_mong #38 1 year ago

Hmm, this will be a dilemma when it comes to importing a save character, do I pick goody two shoes Shepard who saved everyone and told the Illusive Man to fuck off, or bad-ass Level 30 Shepard who got Legion, Jack, Jacob and half the Normandy crew killed and gave Illusive Man the Reaper tech?
  • Koborover #39 1 year ago

Great news, more Keith David as Captain Anderson. I was dissapointed with his cameo in ME2 after his major role in ME1. Maybe Shepard can convince him to pick up a gun and fight the Reapers in ME3.
  • KujiGhost #40 1 year ago

I reckon Conrad Verner will save the day. Just like Randy Quaid at the end of Indepedence Day.
  • Ror1984 #41 1 year ago

"The RPG elements of Mass Effect are being expanded for the third game. Skill trees will be larger, and powers can evolve several times."

Best news I've heard all day :) Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Mass 2, but I did lament some of the streamlining decisions BioWare made, and was hoping 3 would be a bit of a mix of 1+2.

As for the characters returning, that's pretty much what I expected - mostly made up of the previous two games, with a couple (maybe 2-3) new faces to scratch our recruitment itch.

    Also:

"Enigmatic Mass Effect 2 patron the Illusive Man also returns, his Cerberus operation now tasked with killing Shepard. Why the Illusive Man has turned the tables on his former champion remains to be seen."

Well, he was pretty pissed when I blew the Collector base and told Miranda to stop me. I'm guessing that's the 'canon decision', just like letting the council die in ME1. Still, him trying to kill Shepard because he did something the IM didn't like is a bit petty, considering advancing humanity is his main goal, and Shepard is the best way to do that.

I did always wonder whether the IM was legit though. Those eyes.

This is going to be so good! I can't wait!
  • darleysam #42 1 year ago

    What about Thane.

    I'm serious here.
  • Masaroth #43 1 year ago

Wasnt the whole point in number two to recruit a team to deal with the impeding threat of the reapers? Yet having to whisk of to re-recruit my team(invaribly they wont be able to join you save the universe till you sort out a minor dispute of theirs) seems very counter productive. Surely the final act you shouldnt be spending 80% of your time running off after your old team instead of jumping right in and fighting the reapers.

Dunno if anyone else agrees, just seems anti-climatic to me
  • Yossarian #44 1 year ago

  • Subdominator #45 1 year ago

Old character returns will propably have as huge an impact as Kaiden/Ashley returning to ME 2. So virtually none. Everybody from ME 2 can be killed at some point in the game so I'm pretty sure they won't invest a lot of time creating storylines for people that aren't even in some players games. I hope they do more than the text message thing from ME 2 but I doubt it's gonna be much more. You'll be watching holos of former crew members, maybe some give you hints about missions you can also find without them, but that will be it. I had very high expectations after Mass Effect and the whole "import your character" thing. But after seeing what they did in ME 2 (getting rid off your rank, your money, your weapons, your crew, your skills) I won't get my hopes up. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice ...

Also I'm a reinstated Spectre. I don't stand trial for my actions. I am my own judge.

I'm getting tired of these Bioware games requiring you to span half the galaxy (or Kirkwall) to recruit a band of heroes. Fair enough about Dragon Age as they are in, well, the Dragon Ages, but this is a futuristic Sci-fi world. I mean, Shepards a damn hero, surely he could just pick up the damn phone and have them on the Normandy quicker than it would take to fly between planets.

I just hope it doesn't take up as much game time this time around, recruiting them all quickly would also aid the sense of urgency.

Was anyone honestly expecting multiplayer for Mass Effect 3 when it's the last game in a trilogy which hasn't had any so far? I can't say I was and I'm pleased that it doesn't as I believe it would have compromised the quality of the game.
  • darkphoenix #53 1 year ago

After the reset and waste of time in ME2 - assembling a new team, complete with their oh so important personal subquests, when the single most lethal menace to the galaxy is at the verge of awakening - I look forward to finally going on with the Mass Effect story on the third game, and this time PLEASE spare me the soap operas.

In fact, somewhere in the future of remakes, I know ME2 will be left on the cutting floor, nothing more than a stall after the first game.

BTW, bring them on, those negative feedbacks!!

I agree with Daeltaja here, I am getting bored with having to recruit a team from scratch for each of these games. It made sense for one and two, but I think for three it might just be too much. Hopefully they will limit this and put the focus on recruiting support throughout the races for fighting the reapers or something similar.

If I remember right.... You never see the illusive man in person... So he could technically be a machine. Or like Hargreave in Crysis 2. Especially with the eyes that the guy talked about in above post. So I think this time around I will blow the collector ship to pieces haha.
  • Douche #59 1 year ago

Must say, played through the first Mass Effect a couple of weeks back and i'm now playing through the second and what a bloody great game and series it is. Enjoyed the first one mostly for the story but the second imporves on the first in so many ways.

Can't wait for the third and i'm glad i put aside my initial impressions of the first game and played through it.

    @Gastrian

    That is correct, sir.
The Alliance is still no match for a single Reapper ( one that doesn't put its life and energy on Siren's body, that is ), and there are millions just waiting outside the galaxy.

So, ME2 should've been all about searching for some ultimate weapon or cosmical power, so that in the third game we could have a chance of fighting the bastards.

    Will Sheppard witness Earth's destruction?
I bloody hope so, as punishment for ME2.

"Wasnt the whole point in number two to recruit a team to deal with the impeding threat of the reapers?"

It was to defeat the Collectors .
I suspect that ME3 will have you recuiting civilizations to join the fight, rather than just getting indivuduals. This could be why Wrex will be back (if you didn't kill him), if he is now leader, then you'll have him bring his armies to the fight (might be a little easier to recruit the Krogen if Wrex is alive than if he is not)

Maybe Legion will help you get the remaining Geth on your side as well.

There's no way to physically confront the Reapers and survive.

Maybe Sheppard discovers some kind of lost techo-organic virus that disrupts the Reapers from the inside.
Maybe Sheppard becomes a god-like creature.
    Maybe maybe....

The balance of the universe requires that everyone and everything has both its powers and its weaknesses.
    Yin and Yang, always.
The Reapers do have a weakness, it'll be up to Sheppard to find out what it is.

@MojoDex - it's not the Council trying Shepard, it's the Alliance. Even as a Spectre, Shepard is still a human, and after the events in Arrival, it's not too hard to see why the Alliance would want to try him. The Council would likely not get involved one way or the other.

Complaining about having to meet and join up with new (or at least returning) characters in a story driven Bioware game, story driven game, or just a plain old story in general is pointless.

Do you really think thats a good idea to keep the ME2 squad? Bioware still wants to cater to new players (though hopefully nowhere near as much as ME2 did) and starting with a full squad already is just stupid.

Not to mention its pointless from a story perspective. How much progression and expansion would it limit if you were stuck with the same team from ME2?

Besides, they were all pretty much mercenaries anyway. At least in ME1, and hopefully ME3 you are more "brought together" by events. In ME2 you were basically handed a shopping list that said "recruit these people".

In short, if like me youve been waiting to properly reunite with Liara in a full squaddie role in game, and finally reunite with Ashley/Kaidan, hooray for us, Biowares promise paid off. If youre one of the lucky ones whose favourite character transfers over (Garrus), lucky you. Just be thankful you havent had to have them sit out a game. If youre one whos favourite character might not make it in as a squaddie (like at this stage possibly Tali, although nothing is certain yet) hard luck old bean. Now you get to bask in the disappointment that Liara, Ash/Kai and Wrex fans felt in ME2, when you quite possibly didnt give a shit because you were too busy caring about Garrus, Tali or one of the new characters.
    Edited by tyrant1 at 08/04/11 @ 15:49
  • ChuckNorris #79 1 year ago

Tali and Garrus were not new characters.
  • tyrant1 #80 1 year ago

    Technically they were.

They were old faces, but not much of their old character carried over.

They were doing new things, and most of their character revolved around "fuhk me furry, or listen to my calibrations/engine cleaning".

Mind you, most characters fed you stupid "busy lines" for most of the game anyway.

Hopefully weve seen the last of that crap from Bioware.

What they could do is say created between 5-10 short conversations that pop up randomly when you talk to them, with an extra 5 or so for if you romance them (keeping alive the idea that the two are in some kind of relationship more than just in the specific conversations).

At least that way for the first few times you visit them youve got a nice few fresh interesting conversations that pop up randomly. It wouldnt last forever, but first impressions are important. I bet if people werent confronted by "calibrations" so early and had a few random conversations before it came up, people wouldnt have been so bothered by them.
  • Soton4084 #81 1 year ago

To be honest, this makes me even more disappointed that the Arrival DLC wasn't more fleshed out. It was a good DLC in my opinion, but the forced decision could have been handled a lot better. I also would have liked to have been able to have a squad with my Shepard who had opinions on the dilemma. I find it a bit annoying that my good Shepard has to stand trial when I didn't have much choice over my actions.

Aside from these niggles, Mass Effect 3 looks very promising so far. I think much more emphasis will be placed on recruiting races to help Earth as opposed to recruiting crew members. My guess is that some of these races will require you to perform missions for them before they help you. Obviously leaving Wrex alive will make it easier to recruit the Krogan race and letting the Rachni queen live will give Shepard another ally. All in all it should be excellent, so long as Bioware manage to maintain a sense of urgency throughout.
  • Zaiz #82 1 year ago

Tali is missing from that list. It'd be kind of an insult to the poor thing to let her be all...forgotten, considering she had a grand total of ten lines in the first game.
  • telboy007 #83 1 year ago

"considering she had a grand total of ten lines in the first game. "

Not if you got talking to her when she was down in the engine section she didn't. Then it was err... about 15. :)

No multiplayer in ME3, who in the name of feck would want multiplayer in Mass Effect?!
  • The-Bodybuilder #85 1 year ago

The way they described the reapers in ME1, and the way sovereign dealt with the citadel, you would expect thousands, maybe millions of reapers to deal with earth in a matter of minutes.

Why and where would shepherd get all that time to go galaxy curb-crawling for support?

Maybe it's just a small number of reapers that attack earth to begin with.

This is sounding great, hope it works out as i hope it will. Wasn't expecting multiplayer and glad they haven't put it in.

I didn't bother with any of the love interests in Mass Effect 1 because the only one I wanted was Tali. Don't ask me why. So as you can imagine, that was one aspect of Mass Effect 2 I was very pleased with. So, I hope she isn't missing from Mass Effect 3.

I'm thinking that a last-minute assist from the Gath and/or the Racni will play a role in Mass Effect 3 - depending on your choices of course.

Some good stuff for me, but not exactly sold on the all classes having all weapon types available. Depends how they do it, but could be useful if say swithing from adept with pistol and smg to pistol and shotty when against krogans.

Cereberus hunting Shep down suits me, haven't forgiven them from stuff they did in ME1. Considering all my characters will blow up the Collector base, take Miranda so she quits and pretty much tell TIM I'm going my own way, not suprising Cerberus want blood.

More familiar faces the better, very noticeable playing PS3 version of ME2 after playing 360 version several times. Legion can be a contact for getting Geth help, if they and the Quarians aren't busy fighting each other. Similar role for a certain krogan.

I personally argue this is a trial not suitable for the Alliance. Firstly, wan't a sanctioned mission for them. Second, it's more than a human matter. After all, Shep kinda disintergrates 300,000 batarians. More like a Council matter. Thirdly, Shep can be a Spectre so unless there is at least one Council member on Earth the trial can be pointless. I can hope the Turian one is there, dismiss this bitch when the reapers arrive.

No multiplayer best news ever, since the early release date means morefocus for single player

Fucking spoilers people. Seriously, not everyone has bought Arrival yet.

Personally I couldn't care less about Ashley or Kaiden, so I hope I'm forced to squad up with one of them again.

But I WANT Thane, Mordin, Legion, Tali and Liara as squadies. Anyone else is a bonus, but I'd be gutted if at least Thane and Mordin didn't return.

Sounds like Bioware may have learned some lessons from ME2 and DA2 and are going to put some RPG features back in. Here's hoping for a decent Trilogy pack with all DLC included.

I just hope Shepard doesn't keep saying he's going to "take him/her/it/them down!" anymore. Honestly, just say "kill", "destroy", "arrest", whatever, this isn't WWE for god's sake.
