Level-5 working on Professor Layton 6

Won't say whether it's for 3DS or DS.

Level-5 has already started work on a sixth Professor Layton game, CEO Akihiro Hino has revealed.

But his tweet, translated by andriasang, didn't mention a platform.

Four Professor Layton games have been released on DS: Curious Village, Pandora's box, Lost Future and Specter's Flute.

But the most recent Professor Layton game, Mask of Miracle, was a Japanese 3DS launch title.

Will Level-5 opt to stick with the new Nintendo technology?

Earlier this year, Level-5 announced that the four DS Professor Layton games had shipped 11 million copies worldwide between them. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask has sold nearly 250,000 copies in Japan to date, according to Media Create figures.

Professor Layton and the Lost Future - the most recent European release - triumphed on Eurogamer, earning a gargantuan 9/10 from reviewer John Teti.

Professor Layton games released:

  • Professor Layton and the Curious Village - Japan 2007, Europe 2008
  • Professor Layton and Pandora's Box - Japan 2009 (Diabolical Box), Europe 2009
  • Professor Layton and the Lost Future - Japan 2008 (Unwound Future), Europe 2010
  • Professor Layton and the Specter's Flute - Japan 2009, Europe TBC
  • Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle - February 2011, Japan - Europe TBC

Seems obvious they would keep using the extra tech they added for the 3DS, i am sure Ninty would "help" to encourage them to do so as well..

I didn't realise that Prof Layton was two games ahead in Japan. I'll play 4 and 5 regardless, but I'll be a bit annoyed if we have to wait absolutely ages for the 3DS version, given we still need the fourth.

One more on DS for old times?

    So 3DS then.

EDIT: Hang on, what's this then? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professor_L...

I don't really mind what platform they release it on. They just need to hurry up and get the rest out in Euroland.

Love the Professor Layton games. Can't wait for the 4th one.

Given the plummeting sales of DS worldwide (especially Japan), surely 3DS is a given?

Or will the established userbase of DS (with 3DS compatibility) be too tempting a prospect?

Hope the 4th one comes out over here soon. They seem to come out around September every year, hopefully this one will be earlier though. Can't see it happening, but one can hope.

Stopped after the 1st one because of the small proportion of good puzzles... is there any reason I should try the others?

Wasn't a 3ds version already announced last year? Or are they going back to the ds after this one?
  • Shakey_Jake33 #11 1 year ago

Given there's already a Layton game on the 3DS in Japan, I think it's pretty obvious which format they'll be developing it for.

As long as there's no slide puzzles or bloody "as made famous by Die Hard With Avengence" water jug puzzles I'm happy.

    [/only played the first one]

And yet still no word on the fourth game for us beleaguered westerners.

    @kinky_mong

There have been a few variations on slide puzzles in the second and third games, mostly with oddly shaped blocks. Some of them were more interesting than others.

The water jugs got replaced by Towers of Hanoi with pancakes in the second, and some puzzle about moving cans around in the third, so you're safe from those.

Well if the 3DS launch game sold really poorly compared to the previous games, I can see them going back. Remember, although these games have a huge following among gamers, they really are the very definition of 'casual' games. And they'll be the last to upgrade to the 3DS, if they ever do.

And Layton vs Phoenix Wright is also out on 3DS later this year in Japan

In other news, dogshit smells a bit.

I'm not sure I'd describe the series as casual gaming. There's elements of it in the game certainly, but every Xmas I buy the new Layton for the ball and chain and she puts a good 20-30 hours into each one, usually not stopping till every puzzle has been unlocked and completed and she almost never uses hint coins.

I only played the first one, but spent many a 4 hour session at it, especially when confronted with the later noodle scratchers.
