Machinarium coming to PlayStation 3

Microsoft not interested, claims creator.

2009 PC point and click adventure game Machinarium will launch on PlayStation 3.

Speaking at Nottingham Trent University during a GameCityNights events, creator Jakub Dvorský confirmed the game will launch on PlayStation Network later this year.

Dvorský's company Amanita Design will explore a release on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, too.

However, an Xbox Live Arcade version is off the table because, according to Dvorský, Microsoft turned down the game.

"We were already refused by Microsoft to bring the game to Xbox," he told CasualGaming.biz.

"They weren't interested because the game was already released for Mac and Windows, and Microsoft demanded it as part of an exclusivity deal.

"We're not interested in Microsoft anymore."

Meanwhile, Dvorský announced he has begun development on three new games.

They are point-and-click adventure games Samorost 3 and Botanicula (screenshots below), and interactive music video Osada.

Samorost 3 is at least two years from release on PC and Mac. Botanicula is due out by the end of this year. Osada will launch as a free download from Amanita Design's website soon.

Dan Whitehead returned an 8/10 in Eurogamer's Machinarium review, saying, "Machinarium is a treat for the senses that demands more of your brain, a paradoxically gentle yet punishing riff on a genre that, until now, had been revived but sadly defanged for modern players."

Excellent! Was gonna get this on PC before I got rid of it - looking forward to it despite the more clunky pad controls (I imagine).

I'd like to comment on this but apparently I'm a CUNT... as are you!

    "Microsoft not interested"
Quite rightly so. They have all their 1st party stuff to release...
    Oh, Wait...

    Any Move support I wonder?
  • bad09 #7 1 year ago

It's great news more people can sample this lovely game, PS3 owners are in for a surreal treat.

Microsoft are complete idiots for ignoring this gem but then I suppose these days if it 'ain't human waggle or Gears they don't care.
  • Goodfella #8 1 year ago

Very nice game with a great atmosphere, damn hard though, at least for my ageing mind!

"They weren't interested because the game was already released for Mac and Windows, and Microsoft demanded it as part of an exclusivity deal.

What are the people at MS smoking?

I fail to understand this mentality at all, unless MS make the games or fund them in some way that cant expect exclusivity on anything in the current market. Devs need to feed their families too!
  • drxym #10 1 year ago

Machinarium is a Flash movie on the PC. I wonder how they'll port it.
  • GamesConnoisseur #11 1 year ago

If MS are not interested in non exclusive games, then I wonder what up with all these multi platform games?!

BOTH retails and downloads only, such as Stackings, Swarm, Crysis 2 etc etc

    DOES NOT COMPUTE... This smells!
  • Silvergun-Blue #12 1 year ago

Jakub Dvorský: Hey Microsoft, want me to port an excellent and unique game onto your XBL service? It'll really spruce it up, and is bound to make a few bucks for you!

Microsoft: Sure, but we want it all to ourselves! We don't want to share! Because limiting the exposure of unique and talented indie developers is a great thing for the industry!

    Jakub Dvorský: ......... Fuck off!
  • Augmentation #13 1 year ago

I'm thinking that Sony is kicking themselves for not picking up Super Meat Boy so they're going to get as many indie Flash games as possible. Which is something I absolutely support. I just wonder about the controls.

Also: charming_fox, firstly, Rob Fahey's comments aren't Wesley's and I daresay that Rob would take them back if it meant getting a little peace. Second, how is being an argumentative tool helping anybody?

Its quite funny that MS dont want it unless they get exclusive, meaning PS3 gets it exclusive by default, idiots.

Played it on PC from the humble bundle, great game!

Also can someone link to why charming_fox is so pissed off i think it would be less annoying with a bit of context.

XBLA has plenty of new exclusives anyway, competition is though,no need for old ports(non selling ones).I remember some crying about 90% piracy rate for this game.Good thing that PSN games can't be pirated...oh,wait
  • SYS64738 #18 1 year ago

    @GamesProgrammer

Think it's got to do with the (aftermath of the) Slapped Down article by Rob Fahey, who apparently called the EG readership a cnut because of the reactions to his article (or something).

Still, that shouldn't make charming_fox to act like one in every bloody comments thread now.

A friend of mine was holding off getting the PC version in anticipation of an XBLA version. I told him that it wasn't happening but he didn't believe me. Wasn't really expecting the PS3 version either, but since he doesn't have one I can make him play it on PC now.

Presumably Microsoft wanted exclusivity if they were to publish it under XBLA Games and that it might have been possible to get it there via another publisher. But if they're not interested then that's probably the end of that. Not that I'm really concerned as I already played it on PC. Wonderful game it was too.

    @SYS64738

oh interesting hope they cover it in this weeks Podcast.
  • randompanda #21 1 year ago

This really is good. But then, you should all have bought it with the humble bundle and have no need to play it on consoles ;)
  • Lunastra78 #22 1 year ago

Hope this is the case with other PC games too, would love to see a million MS refused games on PSN. :)
  • Jolly_Armadillo #23 1 year ago

Hopefully it will come out on some sort of deal on ps plus. Will get it if that's the case
  • Kanselier #24 1 year ago

Excellent news. I hope they include the (digital) soundtrack, as it is utterly fantastic.
  • M1chl #25 1 year ago

I actually know a guy who made a animations for this game, it was actually my high school teacher (his name is Vaclav Blín) and I hope that Machinarium will sell well on PS3, because it definitely deserves and because shows MS the potential of this game. I am definitely gonna buy it on my PS3. Another question comes to mind, original game on PC was made in Adobe Flash, I have to ask guys in Amanita desing how they gonna bring it to PS3. As far as I know PS3 doesnt support flash...
  • uzivatel #26 1 year ago

The game may be good, but the price is a rip-off.
The English digital download says "GBP 12.50 + VAT". That may not seem much to some, but lets not forget the "expensive" XBLA games are 1200MP - they could not charge more than that. Worse yet, like pretty much all the XBLA devs out there, they would have to share with Microsoft and the publisher ... and Amanita Design seems too greedy to share.
(in case you are wondering, the Czech DVD version of Machinarium was CZK 99 including VAT ... thats some GBP 3.50)
  • SeesThroughAll #27 1 year ago

Give it Move support, because for point-and-click it does make sense.
  • Monkey_Puncher #28 1 year ago

Was just about to come in here and say I read this same news story about 10 months ago....
  • SeesThroughAll #29 1 year ago

The PS3 browser can handle Flash 10, I think. Sony have paid their license to Adobe, worry not.

this game is BEAUTIFUL and everyone should play it.

    that is all.
  • cherryuk #32 1 year ago

Machinarium is a superb game, but needs some dextrous mouse work!

Also the screenshots are not of Machinarium, EG
  • Mister-Wario #33 1 year ago

Hell yes! I loved the demo and can't wait to play this. I wonder what happened to the rumoured WiiWare release, though: I imagine this is better with a Wii/Movemote and I don't own a Move controller yet.

Nice. Got it on Steam a month or two ago, good stuff. Yeah, if it comes to PS3 I hope it gets Move support ...

Gastrian: wasn't interested UNLESS it was an exclusive ... is probably the right way to phrase this situation, yes?

LoL about someone saying that live games piss all over psn games this year..the same could be said about Ps3 exclusives.
  • SeesThroughAll #39 1 year ago

@charliechan (or should it be Sheen?):
Have you actually seen the list of games coming out on XBLA? It pisses all over PSN and always has done.

Oh, you warlock you! You totally destroyed the insecure SDF with the might of your words! :D

Thank you for the laugh. God bless you.

I don't agree with MS here but you're being plain ignorant if you ignore the amount of original titles MS have allowed on to XBLA.
  • Syrette #42 1 year ago

And yeah, what's with the rehashing of a year old story?
  • VandelayIndustries #43 1 year ago

"I don't agree with MS here but you're being plain ignorant if you ignore the amount of original titles MS have allowed on to XBLA."

Indeed, but I wonder how many indie developers have allowed themselves to be pushed about by Microsoft's policies regarding XBLA exclusivity. I don't agree with their practices and as such don't really want to support them by buying these games on XBLA, I'd sooner wait and get the PSN/iOS versions down the line (if available).

One exception for me would be Fez. Looks amazing.

How can MS push an indie dev to do anything. It's been pretty plain and clear that MS Studios for XBLA games only do console exclusive and even that can be set to a limited time period (Braid and Castle Crashers say hi). The reason you go with MS studio is that you get more of the pie(money) and MS will provide publisher duties for your game. I believe Sony has a similar setup for their published games and I do not remember games published by Sony on their Network not being exclusive. So if you do not agree with MS practices then I guess you will not purchase any games on PSN that is published by Sony Studios.
