CCP shows vision for EVE and DUST 514

"You have constantly challenged us."

CCP's global CEO, Hilmar Pétursson, has used the CCP Presents session of the company's Fanfest convention in Reykjavik, Iceland, to showcase an audacious video outlining the developer's vision for the future of EVE Online.

Hinting at an extraordinary level of integration between the studio's upcoming DUST 514 first-person shooter for consoles and its established MMO, the video brought the 3000 attendees of this year's Fanfest to their feet to give a standing ovation.

An impassioned Pétursson also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the players of EVE.

"You have constantly challenged us, constantly taken us further, it's really that which allows us to come up with these crazy ideas," he said. "It really is all coming from you. I really need your help now to get this video out there. Tell the world what is going on here because it's so hard to get the word across."

You can watch the full video below.

In addition to discussing the long-term future of EVE Online, CCP revealed changes to the contraband system. New items are to be introduced that will prove highly desirable to capsuleers – but the job of scanning down smugglers will be placed in player hands. Once marked out, criminals become fair game to every player.

The negative effects from using boosters are also being drastically reduced.

In the spirit of iteration that has driven EVE's continued development, all weapon turrets are currently receiving a spectacular makeover so that they'll now feature multiple components and unique animations for deployment.

More eye-candy will be provided in the form of re-designed nebulae and star-fields.

Earlier in the session, NVIDIA discussed mobile and tablet devices running EVE to a high level of performance – a step in the right direction for portable MMO gaming following the cancellation of Panasonic's Jungle device at the beginning of March.

I think the possibility of being a merc, whoring my clan out to the highest space bidder and shooting baddies on sci-fi planets with real consequences gets me rather too excited.
  • mcmonkeyplc #2 1 year ago

I think I just came. Oh no, I did! Awesome!
  • mingster #3 1 year ago

That is the future of gaming right there.
Hoper i live long enough to see it come true.
  • Ezzekhiel #4 1 year ago

EvE Online is the only game out there that really deserve the MMO label. The rest is just large scale co-op or pvp.

I will pay each member of your clan the generous sum of 100,000 isk, for a year of service, do we have a deal?
  • DaemonSpawn #6 1 year ago

    @ResidentKnievel
Forget about that RedSparrows guy - he knows nothing about business.
Let's make a deal - you take 1M ISK from your corporation treasury per fighter in my crew, I pay 100k to each and we split the difference between ourselves. How do you like that?

We can even go that far as to hire no troopers at all - I only need to get "hired" by your competitors the same way so we orchestrate a fake battle and count everyone as KIA. Destroyed military hardware, maybe even ship or two lost in action - imagine how much money we can make of it!

    :D

But for serious, I really hope backstabbing, scamming and ego are a part of DUST 514 to the extent they are in EVE. They're a much better drive for conflict than K/D ratios.

Can I still shoot people in the head?

...I hope so too. The reason EVE is so laudable is the social aspect. I do hope the interaction with DUST isn't just 'get contract, do job, get paid', or 'give contract etc etc'. It'd be sweet if there was some way for troops to form their own mini corps and effectively become...not rogue, but strong enough to capture planets and hold/withold resources and goodies from the space corps upstairs. Even some way of neutralising the possibility of orbital bombardment etc. It'd really be fascinating to play. And all with shooty shoot bang bang!

This looks a bit stupid really. I mean why bother sending in ground troops when you can just use orbital attacks?
  • ResidentKnievel #10 1 year ago

For the lols, which is a perfectly acceptable reason for an EVE corp.
  • comben #11 1 year ago

you cant tax dead people xardan :).

loving the idea though and thats coming from someone who avoids time sink mmo's. kudos.

Sooooo! is this the first truly FPS MMO?
Can your average FPS fan actually co-operate on mass and on a level where this game could actually work?
How will Pod pilots deal with muppet FPSers who cant follow simple orders?
    Damn! I hope this works!!

Teflon - you may be shocked to discover that FPS players can also play EVE! I'm one of them!

    crikey!
  • Teflonmonkey #15 1 year ago

@RedSparrows Those peps know who they are!
  • WrongShui #16 1 year ago

This will never happen, one can dream though...
  • FWB #17 1 year ago

It will... it'll just take time. CCP have gone about this in the right way. Instead of throwing out a MMO in one go tat does it all, they've built the foundations of a solid game and slowly but surely adding to it. That way if something works they can build on it, if not remove it without destroying the whole project. Eve has been going on for ten years... constant tweaking and shaping. I think they know what they're doing. Good luck to them. Gaming needs this kind of ambition instead of pumping out generic game after game.
  • CaptainKid #18 1 year ago

Very impressive trailer but alas since for some unfathomable reason they decided to release DUST 514 on console ONLY, I won't be playing it. :(
  • RedSparrows #19 1 year ago

    Monies!

I presume that they want that eco-system on consoles only due to control crossover issues, and MONIES.
  • McShifty #20 1 year ago

It'll be interesting to see how CCP manage to negotiate the whole cross platform interaction thing, especially with Microsoft. Hopefully Sony will let CCP off the PSN leash, much like they did with Valve.
  • jrb #21 1 year ago

@teflonmonkey "Sooooo! is this the first truly FPS MMO?"

i think that was planetside.. still nothing has come anywhere near the scale of the battles in planetside, although this video did make me think of it immediately. Whether EVE + DUST can match it remains to be seen, but planetside next will likely be out first, and will hopefully re-set the benchmark of the FPSMMO
  • levitate #22 1 year ago

I hope they take their time. There are too many things for me to focus on already, makes my head hurt. Our corporation got war dec'd this weekend so I've finally experienced my first pvp fight, and unavoidable podding.
  • LordanSS #23 1 year ago

    @McShifty

Since it's a MMO, the dealings will probably be different. Good possibility that they end up with an arrangement like Squaresoft did for FFXI. You actually come across players from the PC, PS2 and 360 platforms.
  • agparrot #24 1 year ago

As my PC seems reluctant to run proper Eve as it advances technologically beyond my capacity, I'd love to see this, just to be near enough to real Eve players to touch them.

I can't really see it appearing 'this gen' though - it just seems one or two features too ambitious.

    In a good way.
  • Teflonmonkey #25 1 year ago

@jrb Good call and also a prime example of how quick a FPS MMO can die. Dust will need to be constantly delivering something unique enough to keep people playing.
  • telboy007 #26 1 year ago

Well if Dust "levels" are going to be based on planet constructions by eve online players then it will add a bit of uniqueness to proceedings. Although once people figure out the best way to do PI most planets will look the same... who knows, I'm sure they have some decent ideas.
  • DodgyPast #27 1 year ago

Levitate, podding should be avoidable outside nullsec bubbles and soul crushing lag.

Simple trick for avoidance is at the point when your ship is definitely going to die then click on a planet and then furiously click on the warp to button, after your ship explodes your pod will insta warp before anyone can lock you.
