Street Fighter x Tekken on 3DS?

Ono: "It should happen."

Eye-catching crossover fighting game Street Fighter x Tekken is, right now, an upcoming arcade, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game. But will it, like Super Street Fighter IV, launch on the Nintendo 3DS?

Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono told Eurogamer this morning that a 3DS version "should happen", and described the potential port as the "next step".

"As far as fighting games are concerned, we've come a long way," Ono said. "It used to be that you had to go to an arcade machine, pay money and play it. Then it came to home console and you could play it in front of your TV. Now you can play Super Street Fighter IV anywhere if you've got a 3DS.

"I think that's an amazing thing. The next step would be to have Street Fighter x Tekken, which is the celebration of all top fighting gamers' dreams in one, to be on 3DS, where you can play anywhere you want.

"That's an ultimate idea. Personally speaking, it should happen. We should probably start making more noise about this. But officially, nothing has been considered yet."

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition launches midnight tonight alongside the Nintendo 3DS console.

Little is known about Street Fighter x Tekken, however. In July last year Ono was quoted as saying it will launch in 2012.

We know Street Fighter stalwarts Ryu and Chun-Li, and Tekken favourites Kazuya and Nina, will be in the game. And the basics of eight-way lever and six button input system remain, but Ono wants to add an "assist" feature.

He said the iPhone version of Street Fighter IV has the answer: a feature that lets players feel they're able to do tough moves.

More information is expected to emerge from Capcom's game showcase event Captivate in April.

"I keep seeing regular mentions of Street Fighter X Tekken, but none about Tekken X Street Fighter.

Has that been canned on the quiet?"

I don't think so, but I distinctly remember hearing shortly after the inital announcements that Street Fighter X Tekken was way, way ahead in development than Tekken X Street Fighter.

@4: "way, way" may be a little too strong, but Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is squarely Namco's focus before Tekken x Street Fighter.

Tekken Tag 2 is the one I'm looking forward to most, but it hasn't even been announced for consoles so I don't think we'll see it for a long time yet. In terms of the "X" series though, I'm much more interested in Capcom's version. Glad it's further ahead in development.

It may work to Namco's advantage to release Tekken X Streetfighter in a different year to Streetfighter X Tekken, I am a big fan of Tekken but was massively surprised at the anticipation for SFIV and they delivered.

I hope once Nintendo produces a power update to the Wii, we finally see the SF series on the console. It will be the first since the SNES

Please do bring SFxTekken to 3DS. Even if it is after the launch of the PS3/360 versions, I would buy another copy for the convenience of handheld. I played the PSP version of Tekken 6 way more than the PS3 version. Can just wake it from sleep mode at any moment and have a fight or two, then turn it off again.

I can't see how this could possibly work. Two utterly different styles of fighting games. That, plus all the tekken folk are much harder than the SF clowns.
