LittleBigPlanet aces score dream jobs

How two fans landed Media Molecule roles.

For any youngsters reading, here's something to show your parents next time they tell you to turn the games console off and do your homework.

A rather heart-warming mini-documentary posted on the PlayStation Blog today reveals how two top LittleBigPlanet players, neither of whom had any prior industry experience, scored dream jobs at developer Media Molecule.

The film shows how Frenchman Christophe gave up his career at an advertising agency following a job offer from the LittleBigPlanet studio and now commutes from Paris to London every week.

Then there's former builder, kayak enthusiast and disaster-magnet John, who scored a job when the developer spotted his amazing custom levels.

The full, cockle-warming clip is reproduced below for your viewing convenience – take a look.

Should you be interested, the same blog post also has details of various new costume packs in the works for LittleBigPlanet 2. Keep an eye open for Tron, Killzone 3 and Move Heroes-themed add-ons in the next few weeks.

i'm screwed then, i'm no better than average at games... :(. Some of the levels that people have made though on LBP are frankly awesome. Kudos to them two!

still if any game company wants a location researcher (Taking photos)... i'm here for hire!

Hopefully they teach these guys a little more about game development tools, research etc. Otherwise thier services will only be relevent for Little big planet.

I wish I had time to put into LBP to design levels.

Edit: negged?! In the real world if I don't know both Avid and Final cut pro I can only apply for half of the editing positions out there. I'm glad for these guys but they are surely doing much more than just using the LBP creator. they must be learning new skills to keep current otherwise they will struggle to find anything beyond.

So people who made a game within a game are now being hired to work on the game itself?

It's like inception all over again!

Spaff and Telarium's story of getting to MM is also an impressive one.

From International House of Mojo to an LBP fansite, created partly to get noticed by MM. Quality gents those two!

Not really pirotic there was a time that the way to get noticed in the industry was by making your own levels and mods for a game, but alas we live in a time where level creators and mods are being stamped out of existence by publishers hell bent on DRM and microtransactions.

Nice guys - especially the Frenchie.

    Good luck to them.

As a journalist I wish I could land a spot at Eurogamer or some other gaming site...
  • Ninja_Tino #9 1 year ago

I wish they said how to find their levels online. Anyone know?

What a beautiful little video, this needs to be shown on national TV in the UK and France. All the bad press the gaming industry and gamers gets, this shows the other side.

What a way to get to work BTW \o/

There's one in the eye for all those "video games are a waste of time" naysayers
    Many congrats to them both.

John's PSN ID is Johnee and Christophe is urbandevill

Sorry for finding the negative in this generally positive story, but how long do you reckon they will work there?

Choosing to employ people based a couple of (albeit great) community maps may be something MM live to regret...
  • eviroboy #14 1 year ago

From the sounds of it they come from backgrounds that obviously gave them too much spare time. Good call from MM, people without experience are cheap as chips to employ and easy to throw away.

Some of the comments on here are pretty grim, clearly from jealous sods.

Design isn't something which is based purely in the technical - although it helps. What a good designer should have is creative flair and a knowledge of what makes something fun. A really good designer can then build that.

These guys have the skills to do both, and yet they're still derided by the vocal minority on here for being cheap, throwaway labour, suggesting they can't cut it in the wider world of design.

Well I work in the games industry, and let me tell you I'd be damn happy to be working alongside either of them.

@altitude2k go read Valve's staff page.
