Dragon Age II sales: Xbox 57%, PS3 22%

21 per cent on PC.

More copies of Dragon Age II were sold on Xbox 360 across UK shops than any other platform - by far.

Chart-Track told Eurogamer this morning that Xbox 360 commanded 57 per cent of the total, whereas PS3 managed only 22 per cent.

The remaining 21 per cent was attributed to PC. Chart-Track doesn't count digital sales, such as those made on Steam.

This sales picture suggests that Dragon Age II on Xbox 360 is the better console game. But that's not the case; actually the PS3 version was ever so slightly preferred in Eurogamer's Dragon Age II face-off. The overall winner, however, was PC - providing you have the goods to power it.

The full UK top 40 chart, which Dragon Age II topped, can be found elsewhere on Eurogamer.

PS3 versus Xbox 360.

I don't think this news makes any sense since they don't count any digital sales, and DAII has been pushed hard on the digital side by EA through Steam but also big promotions on the EA Store.
  • drchocapic #2 1 year ago

So this means that Dragon Age III will be even more dumbed down I guess.
  • feistycheese #3 1 year ago

FFS, the games only been out less than a week, can we not wait a while before making a fanboy baiting article?

"This sales picture suggests that Dragon Age II on XBox 360 is the better console game"

Only if there were an equal number of potential customers for each version. Or if you don't know the first thing about statistics.
  • TheTingler #5 1 year ago

I think the telling point here is "does not include digital sales". I think that'll push the PC side waaaaay up, certainly over PS3.
  • DozyKipper #6 1 year ago

ChartTrack is irrelevant for PC figures. Why bother with them any more when the majority of sales are likely digital.
  • spekkeh #7 1 year ago

Those are actually very good pc sales, especially considering that they're probably 1.5x that. I wonder how this will hold up over time.
  • Vanmunt #8 1 year ago

Guess releasing a gimped demo on the ps3 (something that DF jumped all over) didn't help sales.
  • Xboxfanuk #9 1 year ago

360 controller is best IMO for gameplay feel. Perhaps that is why DA2 was made for consoles.
  • thesombrerokid #10 1 year ago

"This sales picture suggests that Dragon Age II on XBox 360 is the better console game"

this statement suggests that everyone who buys the console version owns a PS3 & a 360 or that they will buy the best version of the game regardless of weather or not they own the console it was made for.
  • _LarZen_ #11 1 year ago

Most I know buy PC games on Steam, so this sale picture is wrong. That said..there are so many games out that for me personaly im just waiting with buying Dragon Age 2.

Never thought I would say this....but there are to many games coming out all the time. We just cant buy them all....
  • AceGrace #12 1 year ago

Could we have a breakdown of sales for every cross platform game released every week please?

    In the interests of balance.

    ;-)
  • raloB #13 1 year ago

So in brief, Xbox 360 gamers prefer some heavily diluted DnD clone. Thanks for sharing.

It is a shame the game was never realised in it original form. Hopefully Bioware will reward their loyal RPG fans one day.

"This sales picture suggests that Dragon Age II on Xbox 360 is the better console game."

So that means McDonald's hamburgers are better than fillet steak, and Fords are better than Ferraris? FFS.

'More popular' != 'better'. Unless you're a complete child with a grasp of logic no greater than a meerkat.

More sales doesn't suggest any kind of quality EG.

Enjoy the damn game on whatever your preferred platform, be it PC, PS3 or X360!!

Some prefers the mouse, keyboard and higher gfx of PC, better fps and accepting higher frame torns of PS3 or vice versa of X360 as in my case.

Cant stand frame tearings is ehy i m chuffed with X360, but this time around, compared to ladt game, actually the gaps between each refuced quite a bit more.

    So nitpicking much?!
  • HL706 #19 1 year ago

"So that means McDonald's hamburgers are better than fillet steak, and Fords are better than Ferraris? FFS. "

The difference with the products you mentioned is that Steaks are more expensive than a McDonald's hamburger. Fords are cheaper than Ferrari's. DA2 costs the same accross consoles so your comparison is flawed.

Anyway, the PC version was the best - why fight over which inferior version was better than the other?
  • Subdominator #20 1 year ago

#14: If you have comparable prices then yes, popularity shows what people find better. If the Ford and the Ferrari had the same price (as Dragon Age II versions) guess what would sell most?

"This sales picture suggests that Dragon Age II on Xbox 360 is the better console game. But that's not the case"

I expect it would suggest more that PS3 owners have already had plenty to spend their money on this year, whilst the 360 release schedule has been more sparse, so they probably have more money to spend.
  • miiiguel #22 1 year ago

Enough with the damage control. What do you care where ppl spend their money on ? Stop with the justifications.
  • Anciegher #23 1 year ago

I bought it retail for PC, yay me.
  • technicianTed #24 1 year ago

Ps3 fans keep telling us they hate screen tearing, they are voting with their wallets.

They are disgusted with no vsync in their version.

Actually it's probably nothing to do with that, but i thought i'd throw it in.
  • coldfoot #25 1 year ago

Looks like PS3 owners chose to buy the better reviewed Motorstorm Apocalypse.
  • pantherjag #26 1 year ago

At the risk of inducing a riot can i suggest that PS3 owners at this moment in time have a better selection of recently released games to spend money on with killzone 3 just out LBP2 still doing ok and a few other great games on the horizon.

Decent recently released 360 games are to be fair a little sparse at the moment. It may explain the big difference just a little
  • Moribundman #27 1 year ago

Waaaaah, they've totally skewed their sales in favour of the consoles. Why can't they sell more of them on the PC like with DA1? Why did they go and change it and sell more on the consoles?

Honestly. Baldurs Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment were ace and that didn't sell any copies on the consoles. I want more RPGs that don't sell any copies on consoles. Thats the only way to free them of console taint.

CF: Fallout games on consoles. Bla bla bla.
  • WJF #28 1 year ago

'Waaaaah, they've totally skewed their sales in favour of the consoles. Why can't they sell more of them on the PC like with DA1? Why did they go and change it and sell more on the consoles? '

Erm, your sarcasm would be better if the PC sales figures for this title weren't actually stronger than the PS3 (given that a good proportion of owners will buy through non-tracked digital sales).
  • michaelius #29 1 year ago

Hmm obviously 6 milion x360 consoles in british homes versus 4 milions ps3 have nothing in common with that ;)

Or the fact Bioware was making xbox brand titles since Kotor versus whole 3 games released on PS3 so far (DAO, ME2 in January this year, DA2)
  • jonbwfc #30 1 year ago

TBF, I'm a PS3 owner but I bought it on PC instead. If I had a 360 I'd have bought it on PC instead. It's just a game more suited to a PC environment, regardless of the 'dumbing down' they may or may have have done to it.

As for the replies, of course price and other factors are important too. You've kind of made my point for me. My point is you can't attribute commercial success to any one given particular factor, there's just not that level of cause-effect going on. There area myriad of reason why PS3 and/or 360 owners might go for the PC version instead. There are many reason why pure console gamers might pick the 360 or PS3 version over the other. Where is the evidence that people have picked the 360 over the PS3 version because it is (or they think it is) 'better'? have EG actually asked anyone? Have they done any research?

Ha, sorry, 'research' = 'journalism' doesn't it, as oppose to 'rewording press release and posting flamebait opinion pieces'.

My opinion : multiple console owners were put off DA2 PS3 by the fairly shoddy quality of DA1 PS3. Bad first impressions last. The relative quality of DA2 versions is irrelevant, since very few people other than journalists will actually ever see both side by side anyway.

I guess everythought thought the PS3 version would be inferior. Looking on the bright sider, I look forward to picking up a heavily discounted PS3 version.
  • oreillymj #33 1 year ago

Since Playstation Plus came about (and I decided to keep €50 in my wallet) with certain demo's limited to the privileged, I've bought less from the store and retail.

So Sony may have got €50 from users for PS+, but it may well end up costing them more over the longer term in lost sales/license fees.
  • Rens11 #34 1 year ago

Gotta remember not everyone can afford to buy new games and with a couple big hitters already on ps3 this year in lbp2 and killzone3 its probable some people can't afford/justify another game si soon

There is, it's the small X button at the top right of your browser window.
  • aidey6 #36 1 year ago

Agree with Rens11, PS3 owners have Killzone 3, LBP2, DC Online plus of course the rather universally loved Mass Effect 2 with the extra DLC to finish too.

  • tulx #37 1 year ago

Mm, what good is this chart if it doesn't track digital sales? We're not in the 1990ies.
  • WinterSnowblind #38 1 year ago

    @drchocapic
I don't understand the "dumbed down" statements. The gameplay is largely the same, the only really big difference is from the dialogue options with a more pre-set character, rather than the completely custom one from the original Origins. I think that was a bad move but I don't see how it's "dumbed down", it seems to have been done to create more of a cinematic experience.

And Origins itself sold very well on consoles so I don't see why the blame for these changes falls on them, it's clear that there was a market for that type of thing on consoles.

But really, why is the original game considered more "intelligent" or whatever, it's not like it was Baldurs Gate. Get over yourselves.
  • mcmothercruncher #39 1 year ago

The last game was a slideshow on the PS3, it's not surprising it's lowest considering.
  • Vyggo #40 1 year ago

Wouldn't it be good for the pc industry if steam would share their sale numbers? You'd think digital downloads makes up very a significant portion of pc sales these days.
  • iter #41 1 year ago

    @#38... not if you're a Mac user. :)
  • StooMonster #42 1 year ago

I am going to wait until Xmas for the GotYE with all the DLC included for a bundle price of £20 on Steam -- got plenty of games to keep me going until then, including Dragon Age 1 ... which if I had waited until I had enough time to play would've got GotYE with all DLC for less than I paid for it.

So mines a future PC sale. :)
  • UncleLou #43 1 year ago

Well with that 21% of sales, PC Gamers OBVIOUSLY deserve loads more extra work to be put into their version of the game.

    Hey, Spartan.

And 21% in the UK, with no digital downloads no less - impressive. Must be even more of a smash hit on the PC anywhere else.

"Erm to all the people quoting the "This sales picture suggests that Dragon Age II on Xbox 360 is the better console game." and having a go at eg about did you actually bother to read the next sentence or did you just see that sentence, froth wildly at the mouth and start bashing away like an angry tiger at the keyboard?

Btw just in case you decide to read this and start frothing at the mouth and yada yada yada rather than re-read the article the next line starts "But that's not the case; actually the PS3 version was ever so slightly preferred""

The point is that the number of sales suggests very little with regard to the relative quality of the versions. The next sentence doesn't qualify the first, it sets up a false counterpoint, as though it were some kind of mystery that the XBox version sold more even though the PS3 version is of slightly better technical quality. It's not. Installed base alone accounts for a whole lot of the difference. Developer fanbase (Bioware has a much longer track record on XBox platforms than on PS3) could probably handily take care of the rest, so we don't even have to go into more subjective (and contentious) issues like quality of recent releases.

So it's not just the one sentence - the entire paragraph is guff, and feels like either filler or a deliberate attempt to stir up an interplatform flamewar (because we certainly don't have enough of those).
  • customfirmware #47 1 year ago

A mediocre game sells less on ps3. True gamers I guess.
  • azix2 #48 1 year ago

piracy is already killing ps3 game sales like it did with the PC! omg! what?!? the 360 has more piracy than the ps3? no way!
  • Kaminari #49 1 year ago

This sales picture simply suggests that 360 users are dying for *any* RPG to be available on the platform. Thankfully they will join the ranks of Demon's Souls harbingers soon enough.

Playing on PC at the moment, about 20 hours in, just scratched the surface. Beautiful game on max settings. The docks and lowtown in particular, with that far east/desert style art, is fantastic.

Loving every minute of this game so far.
  • bladdard #52 1 year ago

I agree with most posters, the 360 has a barren spell so everyone mops up what's available whereas the very fertile PS3 games market gives gamers more choice ATM. Also there's not really much to choose between the two versions and multi-format releases tend to be better on the 360.
