    Sorry, but unless they manage to give the controls an over-haul as well I'm not buying. They'll have to do more than give it a new lick of paint to interest me.
  • vx-chemical #2 1 year ago

    Actually they were quite good games. i played them all on the 360 though, so I dont need the HD remakes.

    I am very much looking forward to the reboot.

    so..they're the 360 versions?
  • Murton #5 1 year ago

    "so..they're the 360 versions?"

    Not quite as the 360 versions were sub-HD, consider these what the 360 versions should have been.

    @Krazyface - they've done a lot more than given it a lick of paint judging by the screens, the lighting model appears to have been updated for starters. No way of knowing if they've improved anything else until release. Look at the updates to Prince of Persia Trilogy for an idea of what this will be like if done right, HD resolution, better lighting, better frame rate, better sound, just better all round really.

    VX-chemical is right though, if you already own these, the difference isn't likely to be so great that you need buy them again.

    Just goes to show how good the PS2 version was, and not necessarily how good the PS3 version is. Although the resolution is not so great on the PS2, they have a more crafted feel. These new shots look a touch... lazy.
  • LHH #7 1 year ago

    Wasn't the 360 versions of Legend and Anniversary etc in HD (ish) anyway? I don't get it.
  • Pehmu #8 1 year ago

    Two things I don't understand:
    1. Why is it that people think these new Tomb Raiders (Legend, Anniversary, Underworld) have bad controls? Do you play with a keyboard or what?
    2. Why oh why these same Tomb Raiders have such a bad reputation? They're fine action-adventures each one of them.
  • joelstinton #9 1 year ago

    i would consider this just to play anniversary as i missed out on that release, and of course havn't played the original since its ps1 days, but... its a strange trilogy. doesn't make much sense at all. there is no story relationship at all. its just as though they have only these games to compete in the reissued hd classics. I am all for these HD remakes (When done right), but regardless of updated visuals, lighting and all that, this smacks a little bit of desperation.
  • Marshall2008 #10 1 year ago

    Pity its not the very first tomb raider. That would be a must buy.
  • Acrid #11 1 year ago

    The cynical side of me asks why these aren't comparison shots with the 360 version, of course it's going to look better than it's PS2 counterpart.
  • GamesConnoisseur #12 1 year ago

    Well to actually shows PS3 improvements over all previous versions, come on, compares X360 AND PC versions as well as PS2, then we can talk!
  • BBIAJ #13 1 year ago

    @Murton:

    Better sound on the PoP HD Trilogy?

    Hardly, it's all echoey and distorted!

    And I'm not alone with that issue, a quick Google search shows it as a common thing, including a dedicated thread to it on the Ubisoft forums, which typically, no-one from Ubi has posted in...
  • Acrid #14 1 year ago

    @Marshall2008

    Anniversary is quite a faithful remake of the original Tomb Raider.
  • Doctor_What #15 1 year ago

    Is it bad that I think I prefer the look of the PS2 versions? They look more like the classic Lara to me.
  • Murton #16 1 year ago

    @BBIAJ: not had any sound issues on mine so far, could be setup related. I must admit though, the TV I had in the PS2 days was pretty shit so maybe that's why I rate the sound as better this time round.
  • BBIAJ #17 1 year ago

    @Murton:

    Interesting... It could be an issue with the PS2 originals being in Stereo or Dolby Stereo/Pro Logic, and it being forced into optical 5.1 by my decoder.

    Another issue I and others have had though, is speech being incredibly quiet during the FMV's, with the music being almost unbearably loud.

    At the minute, I'm hoping the rumour of the Xbox 360 trilogy being true means that the sound might be in true 5.1, assuming that is that it's using the original Xbox's assets.
  • Murton #18 1 year ago

    "Another issue I and others have had though, is speech being incredibly quiet during the FMV's, with the music being almost unbearably loud."

    I did have that issue, a few minutes in the sound options resolved it though. I've been seeing this in a lot of games recently, music being much louder than voices and sounds, I suspect it's probably an equaliser issue, the standards being used in games don't tally with the standards used on common TVs/sound systems. I don't know about anyone else but I'm far too lazy to switch my EQ settings when I switch from playing games to watching TV or whatever so I just picked the preset that seemed to work best and stuck with it.

    some of the new shots seem to have removed a lot of the atmosphere and colour of the originals.Looks like a monkey island 1 special edition to me rather than a monkey island 2. (ie lazy)

    "Not quite as the 360 versions were sub-HD, consider these what the 360 versions should have been. "

    Any proof that the PS3 version are not in sub-HD either?
  • YoungPayters #21 1 year ago

    this kinda shows me more of how powerful the ps2 really was to be honest. quite a good machine that was
  • Widge #22 1 year ago

    Really? I thought it was the least powerful of the 3. Compare GTA:San Andreas on Xbox to PS2 and it really is a significant step up on the Xbox. Gamecube games felt more crisp and vibrant than the PS2 as well.

    Counts for nothing really, though, as it had more games on it!
  • Nikanoru #23 1 year ago

    A bunch of these just look plain WORSE no matter how you view it. Seems like a programmer's job, this. "Oh we'll put some different lighting on these models and textures that weren't made for it, obviously they should automatically improve." That's not how that works despite what some people think.
  • Nikanoru #24 1 year ago

    "The cynical side of me asks why these aren't comparison shots with the 360 version, of course it's going to look better than it's PS2 counterpart. "

    Precisely why you'd think. They haven't done shit to them, at least not to Legends, that looks -identical- to the horrible 360 version.
  • Aretak #25 1 year ago

    "Any proof that the PS3 version are not in sub-HD either?"

    It would rather miss the point if a collection specifically touted as a HD makeover wasn't actually in HD. It's being released under the 'Classics HD' banner, so I'm sure they could be charged with false advertising if nothing else were they not. I'm not sure what "proof" you'd expect one way or t'other considering it hasn't even been released yet.

    "...its a strange trilogy. doesn't make much sense at all. there is no story relationship at all."

    All three games have the same story thread running through them; Lara's search for her missing Mother, Amelia. Chronologically, the events of Anniversary takes place first, then Legend, and Underworld concludes the story. Originally, TR1 (which Anni is a re-imagining of) never had the Amelia plot, it was purely Lara searching for the Scion artefact on behalf of Natla. The Scion plot remains in Anniversary, but Crystal shoehorned in the Amelia plot as well (much to the anger of fans of the original TR1). The bulk of the story takes place in Legend, where players find out how Amelia disappeared when Lara was a young girl, and Underworld concludes Lara's search with a climax that most of us TR fans thought was a big pile of shit. It also saw Crystal paint themselves into a corner because, according to their bio, Lara's reason for being a tomb raider was her lifelong search for her Mother. With that search over, she had no reason to be a tomb raider any more. Hence the reboot.

    Basically, the trilogy isn't strange at all like you thought.

    @TheDriffter

    None of them were in HD on the 360, not even Underworld.
  • Pehmu #28 1 year ago

    "chessboxer that means this Tomb Raidor collection isn't HD as well ? Because I'm certain they will just be 360 ports."

    I'm sure they are 360 ports, but they just bumped up the resolution a bit. Hopefully.
  • Murton #29 1 year ago

    "I'm sure they are 360 ports, but they just bumped up the resolution a bit. Hopefully."

    I'd hope that they've done something more than that. Look at God of War, Prince of Persia and Sly Racoon remakes, there's all sorts of improvements going on, increased resolution, improved frame rates, better lighting models, 5.1 sound, stereoscopic 3D, they're almost new games rather than simple remakes. Then of course there's the Ico Collection which looks nothing short of amazing. If there turn out to be ports of the 360 versions with a few extra pixels then I'd say the whole endeavour was pretty much a waste of time, the whole point of remakes is to improve and take advantage of modern tech, not simply cash in with a low budget re-release of a popular title.
  • BigE0n #30 1 year ago

    More importantly why is it that in http://www.eurogamer.net/view_screenshot... the sub HD version she has a Belly Button, but in the HD version its has been removed!!!!

    ;-)

    @djronz

    " It will never be able to capture my amazement at the original one back on ps1 though. "

    I agree, anniversay is a great game all the same but it doesn't come close to the wow moments I had when playing through the original on PS1, I still remember walking out into the St Francis Folly level for the first time and this is what they need to be able to do in the reboot.
  • FladgeMangle #32 1 year ago

    Anniversary was, in my opinion, a flawless update. Even up to and including the stupid unplayable ending, which was recreated perfectly, awful gameplay intact. :-)

    Joking aside, I actually loved it. Played it on PSP mostly (EG rating 6/10 - can't control camera, yes you can EG, press triangle, never mind)
  • makeamazing #33 1 year ago

    Well i've never [cough][cough] actually played any of them. I think i played a demo once... so i guess I will add this onto my list :D
  • jackdoe #34 1 year ago

    Heh. They increased her bust size for the PS3 compilation.
