PSN themes are turning 3D

Now will you buy them?

Absolutely nobody will ever believe you have a 3D telly unless you can show them 3D content - they'll call you a liar and push you over.

Thank god then that Sony sympathises; cue 3D dynamic themes for PlayStation 3.

The very first of these, a theme for PixelJunk Shooter 2, can be bought by Japanese people now, according PSN Stores.

Yes your Western money is useless, at least until tomorrow when the EU PlayStation Store cupboards are restocked. Note, however, that a 3D PixelJunk Shooter 2 dynamic theme might not arrive tomorrow, but there's a good chance of it.

There's no word on the price of these new 3D themes.

PixelJunk Shooter 2, you say? Eurogamer reviewed that this morning, awarding 7/10.

Perhaps not PixelJunk Shooter 2, but 3D themes? Hell yes. Where do I sign?

As much as I'm looking forward to hopefully buying a 3D TV this year (waiting for the new model lineups here in the Spring), I have a hard time seeing myself wanting to put on the 3D glasses whenever I want to browse the XMB - which I do numerous times a day as I use my PS3 for video and music as well as games.

I like the idea of 3D themes, as I do of Dynamic themes in general, but the charges are just too much. I can't justify spending money on something that just sits behind the XMB for the minutes, if not seconds that I'm not actually playing a game.

But free or 50p etc then maybe.

Keep offering extra stuff up like this Sony. I can't use it myself, but things like this make the Playstation experience much richer. As far as 7/10 for Pixeljunk Shooter 2 - really? I thought all the Pixeljunk games were pretty shoddy to be honest, other than Monsters that is.

I bought one dynamic theme, and wish I hadn't. It just frustrates me seeing the same animations loop over and over. Probably the biggest argument against themes on the PS3 is simply that the default wibbly-line thing is just so nice, I don't see the point in paying for something else.

Especially at the price. Almost as bad as Xbox 360 'premium' themes, which all too often are nothing of the sort.

They'd have to be REALLY cheap. Not likely I'd buy any then. :)

The only theme that I consider to have been done well is the Heavy Rain one, which came with the Gamer's Edition/Deluxe Edition/whatever it was called. The depth of the street with the fall of rain visually infront of you and (aurally) surrounding you meant that it stayed on my PS3 for a long time.

Would actually be pretty nice in 3D as well.

    The flower one is lovely

The LittleBigPlanet one is also lovely, with a great day/night cycle animation.

I'm with Miths on this one. I got a 3DTV at Christmas on Sony's VAT back offer and I've tried as many bits of 3D content as I could since then but I'm going to have to draw the line at themes I think. Mainly because I don't want to have to have my glasses on every time I switch on the PS3, much better to pick up the specs when I actually activate some 3D content rather than needing them all the time.

Besides, how long do you spend looking at the XMB? Long enough to truly enjoy a theme that you've paid for?

@miths - Would be good if the had a 5 second grace period where, if you hit, say triangle, xmb will be 3-d otherwise it will remain 2d.

    And God is capitalised!

    "And God is capitalised!"
Maybe he meant a general god, one from polytheism, not the one from monotheism. :) You know, like "thank a god" (any of you gods out there, because I don't know, which one to thank exactly for this - probably a gaming god of some kind).
Then it would be alright maybe? Or are they all capitalised, them guys? :)

The Motorstorm: Arctic Edge dynamic theme is really nice, all zoomy in and outty, and you have to wait a really long time, or just be really bored (or sad!), to have the hot air balloons fly all the way across the sky (OMG! It's so intense! What does it mean!?).

Better yet, it's FREE on the UK PSN, but the Yanks have to pay for some reason...

I'll try it as long as it works in 2d as well. I do some occasional 3d gaming but I don't usually start off playing in 3D

2Red Panda: True. Then again, those gods have already their own name capitalised, don't they? They don't need to compensate their namelessness like the one from christianism. :)
Btw, I do agree totally with the idea of themes both 2d and 3d, user selectable. I think it's a good concept overall.
  • DozyKipper #17 1 year ago

I agree with Widge. The Flower dynamic theme is the only one worthy of your money so far.
  • K1LLAY #18 1 year ago

FAKE! It's in basic 2D unfortunately! I think I want my money back now...
