Victory: Command & Conquer back on top

New game announcement "later this year".

The leaked news that EA has created a new developer responsible for breathing new life into the Command & Conquer series is now official, and it comes with a pledge to fans: C&C will be top RTS dog once again.

Victory Games, the three-pronged studio collective formed to create a "AAA Command & Conquer game", has promised fans it is "committed to bringing Command & Conquer back to the forefront for the next 10 years and beyond".

In an interview on the revamped Command & Conquer website, vice president of strategy games Jon Van Caneghem said: "We've put together a team made up of some of the best talent from previous Command & Conquer games along with a great mix of quality industry veterans. Everyone that we've brought on board is very passionate about making strategy games."

Following the launch of divisive Command & Conquer games in recent years, other RTS games, such as Relic's Dawn of War series and of course Blizzard's StarCraft, have emerged as leading lights.

Clearly, EA wants Command & Conquer to reclaim its RTS crown. An announcement on Victory's first new game is expected later this year.

So, what's in store?

"With over 30 million sold, Command & Conquer now looks to the future, with plans to combine classic RTS gameplay with bold new technology, innovative new concepts and, as always, tanks by the dozen," reads the website.

Some have speculated that C&C will go down the social route, and incorporate Facebook and other networking features.

Van Canegham has hinted in the past at a "direct-to-consumer" future for the venerable RTS series.

"It allows you to do everything you would have expected from a boxed game, but it adds a lot more to it... being connected and connected with players, and persistence, the social elements of playing against each other with other friends," Van Canegham said in 2009.

I doubt it will be worse than C&C4, to be honest.

Have not played C&C since RA2. Bring back the RA1 days!

make it more like supreme commander with the zoom out to map camera and its a sale. Every other RTS game feels restrictive after playing that :-(

    Facebook C&C?

Whilst I have no doubt this is the future, it's not quite the future i'd have liked.

Believe it when I see it. RA2 was the pinnacle in my opinion.

I'm not sure how when talking about the resurrection of a once venerated RTS IP you can actually mention the word "facebook".

Since they've pretty much destroyed the Tiberium Saga, Im hoping for a new Red Alert or Generals 2. Wishful thinking though.

Personally I am not sure i want another C&C. I loved the series, grew up with it, really looked forward to the revelation and conclusion of the Tiberium story, which was what I loved about C&C in the first place.

    C&C 1 was brilliant,
    RA1 was wicked,
C&C2 high expectations not really met, but story was good,
RA2 was fun, but too easy
C&C:G was good and it seemed that C&C was coming back strong
C&C3 really made the Tiberium story line interesting again
RA3: Just kicked the arse and was no enjoyment (first C&C game I did not complete)
C&C4: Not worth mentioning, it litterally killed the Tiberium Storyline (second C&C game i did not complete)

If I dont get to the end of the game, for me it means that not just the gameplay was a dissaster, but everything else was too. I can handle bad gameplay when the story is good, or when the story is bad i can go along with good gameplay but when both suck as much as they did in C&C4, the entire series just failed there and then. No studio is going to be able to repair that.

They'll sure have a lot of work to do then, c&c4 pretty much killed peoples hopes for the series, so if they intend to "resurrect" the series they realy can't afford making a similiar mess that was c&c4 and RA3

    QFT.
    TD and RA, Awesome.
    TS, pretty damn good.
RA2, eh, never got into it.
Generals, seemed like a fun new franchise, definitely worked. Seemed like too much of a rushed cash in on world events though.
TW, definitely felt like C&C was fully back, as a top traditional RTS in this new age of land control points and unit caps. those games have their place, but this genre had been neglected.
RA3, the less said the better, really.
C&C4........ NEVER HAPPENED. IF I CLOSE MY EYES AND PUT MY FINGERS IN MY EARS IT'LL GO AWAY!!!!

Of course if westwod studios had been left alone and not shutdown, the games would be still being developed well !

Red Alert series was the best imo. Enjoyed all of then, but Generals dropped the ball a bit , as did the later titles except RA 3, which was great.

EVEN THE SPAM POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE MORE ENTERTAINING THAN C&C4

Interestingly Steam have put up a C&C Sale. £3.74 for each of the later games.

New Generals please. Loved the original.

Won't be easy. Since I had both Blizzard's games and the Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander series, I didn't miss C&C much. At some point, I bought RA3 on a Steam sale, but it was far from being a match for those.
