EA teases "very exciting" new FPS

Continues to chase Acti's shooter crown.

EA will release a "very exciting" as-yet unannounced FPS before the end of 2011, according to CEO John Riccitiello.

The EA boss made the announcement while answering a question from an investor regarding the future of the Medal of Honor franchise during an earnings call today.

"The intention for us is to have strong FPS entries each year," he explained.

"I don't want to give away the thunder from our call but for quite a long time now I've been saying it's our long term goal to take back the first person shooter category leadership.

"We've made strong progress in calendar '10 over calendar '09. This year, with the tail-end of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 still doing well and Medal of Honor still doing well... with Crysis and Bulletstorm we're clearly going to make more progress towards our goal and that's before we get to what I think is going to be a very exciting entry later in the year that we're not yet announcing."

Of course, he could be referring to Battlefield 3, widely expected to launch this year – though that was officially announced in August last year and has been talked-up by Riccitiello since.

Failing that, we're left with either a second bite of the cherry from the new look Medal of Honor series or a brand new franchise. Place your bets.

    Starbreezes Syndicate or GTFO.
  • Final_Frontier #2 1 year ago

Yup, Syndicate would be my bet as well.

There's a lot of life left in FPS, in fact we're barely scratching the surface really. What IS dead is COD. There's no place for twitchy, bug ridden small scale shooters IMO. Everyone I know with Black Ops bar 1 guy has said it's crap, it may be the start of the slide for the COD series. I want fun, but tactical play. I want MUCH larger scale battles, I want vehicles, I want Bad Company with more flexibility, bigger maps, and more players. Or Halo with massive teams, bots to fill gaps in teams or if you don't want to play online. Steel battalion style persistent battlefields, (imagine being a guy on the ground as the giant VT's fight alongside you) and actual strategic objectives, like holding a depot that allows your vehicles to reload etc, or a clifftop, or a runway. I know I'm pipe dreaming, but capture the flag etc should be left as a novelty, real FPS should have an angle. Borderlands was a good start, MAG had a great idea badly executed, even Bulletstorm is bringing something new to the table.
  • metalangel #6 1 year ago

That's another reason I don't want to get Bulletstorm. Project Ten Dollar and EA in general can fuck off.
  • coolbritannia #7 1 year ago

In fact, my perfect game: Ace Combat/Dropship in the skies + Bad Company/Mag/Halo/Steel Battalion on the ground + RTS style orders decided by Generals overlooking the battlefield. That would be friggin epic. And this is where someone usually names a PC game I've not heard of that does just that.

    Um. The respawn guys? Hello!
  • AnsemsApprentice #9 1 year ago

    ^^ Viva Pinata. You're welcome.
  • coolbritannia #10 1 year ago

It's not enough time for Respawn to have a quality title out, given they started over from scratch. And Viva Pinata is brilliant, I played it today :0-)

i was thinking mag but then you've said it and isnt your cup 'o' tea. im fed up with shooters these days, cod4 was my last cod and have never played moh since ps1. theres only two i play and i play them because theyre broadly similar with no one running faster, no one having stronger armour, no one having a better scope and no one having more penetrating bullets than another player. those are the ancient bf2mc on 360 and the slightly sprightly warhawk on psn. these style fps' that seem ten a penny these days are, for me, the 7th gens' legacy and when i see more coming i just want to run in the opposite direction. its only standout shooters like uncharted that make me excited to play them, but then, theyre completely different games than the fps' that reign these days

@coolbritannia: Do you they usually say 'Planetside' to you?
  • coolbritannia #13 1 year ago

I got a lot of love for Ghost Recon too, the proper ones on pc and xbox 1, none of this GRAW bollocks.
  • bad09 #14 1 year ago

Will "very exciting" turn into "did not meet our quality expectations" like last time John?

    / glares at MOH

Honestly I couldn't care less about yet another FPS, this year I'll probably only look at 3 and that's it. Crysis 2 which looks a bit poo TBH but is holding on just thanks only to my love of the original, Deus Ex as if it's half as good as the original it might bring some life back to the genre and out of curiosity to finally play it maybe Mr Nukem might get a look in.

Other than that you got no hope, after the mess that shipped as a PC version of BLOPS right now I don't even think I'll be buying COD this year.

Make a nice space combat game that doesn't require monthly subs, I'll have some of that.
  • jackdoe #15 1 year ago

Mirror's Edge 2? Maybe they throw in more guns this time.
  • Kenshin001 #16 1 year ago

MAG had a great idea badly executed

Not sure how it was badly executed. I play MAG a lot and it pretty well matches what you described. Large scale battles, tactical play, vehicles, more players, commander giving orders.

Anyway, the new game will be the Respawn team's.
  • darkmorgado #17 1 year ago

    Starbreezes Syndicate or GTFO.

If they turn Syndicate into an FPS then they certainly can GTFO.
  • Master_Ted #18 1 year ago

    Timesplitters 4.

your body is not ready for it, but its coming.
  • sfp_noodle #19 1 year ago

    *sigh*

The letters FPS stopped exciting me a long time ago.
  • louyfitz #20 1 year ago

I agree that much larger scale, tactical and well balanced shooters are the way forward.

But I wouldn't say CoD is dead, rather that the multiplayer is getting old, even for hardcore FPS fans.

I have spent a lot of time on the latest CoD and can safely say the multiplayer seems to be resorting to throwing new toys at people in a desperate attempt to draw attention from the fact it's the same as any other CoD, once of course the toys grow not so new.

It's still an ok game, but ok is not groundbreaking or breathtaking.

Single player I found very enjoyable, did laugh at the fight club-esk conclusion tho.

Main gripe however = Why no crossbow attachments in multi?

Liked the scoped one in the snow :)
  • Lusterpurge #21 1 year ago

It's sad that EA has to release 5 fps games in a year to compete with CoD. Let's hope Acti runs CoD into the ground (profit wise) so companies can stop trying to catch up with it and focus on releasing more diverse games.

  • Olemak #26 1 year ago

Of course they have something big planned for the "holidays". Project Redlime / syndicate wars seems likely, it has been In development for a few years but has not been officially unveiled yet.
  • Harmonica #27 1 year ago

What if it's Syndicate and it's a mix of strategy and FPS, so you're part of the ground team, but you're giving the orders and you're the boss outside of the missions. Could work.
  • coolbritannia #28 1 year ago

    It's a damn shame I don't play pc games.
  • Rodster #29 1 year ago

I'm sorry but I just can't get excited for anymore FPS games. O_o

  • photoboy #33 1 year ago

Come on EA, Mirror's Edge was an FPS, let's have a sequel to that please!
  • SHPanda #34 1 year ago

    Definitely Respawn Entertainments first game.
  • BritishBlue1 #35 1 year ago

+1 to Photoboy! Mirror's Edge didn't last very long but it's stuck in my head, one of those games that's hard to forget.

Wishful thinking time but how about:

Mirror's Edge 2. Simply advance the storyline and have Faith take a more active role in the resistance movement.

or, and this is a big time wish. System Shock 3. EA own the license, they said when they acquired way back when that they had every intention of using it to make more games and with current gen tech they could make it even more atmospheric than SS2. As long as we end up with a System Shock title and not something like Bioshock they'll be onto a winner.
  • tachometer #43 1 year ago

WHy hasnt anyone done a FPS with fish instead of humans, imagine being a big shark going up against a whalefish or a quick marlin puncturing a salmon. Man I hope EA release this now!!
  • des #44 1 year ago

Another EA fps, like they don't have enough already...meh

""I don't want to give away the thunder from our call but for quite a long time now I've been saying it's our long term goal to take back the first person shooter category leadership.

Interesting that they think they had it in the first place.

It went from ID and then Epic and Valve into the mix, then I guess you could add Bungie into that, although I'm not much of a fan of the Halo games.

Anyway, didn't they say the same about their latest MOH...

    @coolbritannia

.....you should try ARMA II.. it seems to fit your description to a T. It's epic.... go to YouTube and check out some of the mammoth battles.

Edit: I just noticed you don't play PC games. But if that's what you're after then get yourself a monster PC (cos that's what you need for ARMA II) PC gaming rocks!

Until an FPS attempts to make the protagonist a giant crab, I'll consider the genre very much alive.

At the moment they are concentrating on Fish with COD, I am sure they will look at crabs shortly..... ;)

    /me gets coat.
  • weebl #48 1 year ago

Just in case anyone is interested, I have a game in development which will revolutionise the whole FPS / MMO genre.

I haven't started developing it yet, but I figured I was full of bullshit enough to make such a lofty claim. I hope you're all looking forward to it.
