Catwoman headlines DC Universe update

SOE's MMO flooded with new content.

Catwoman takes centre stage in new content heading to superhero MMO DC Universe Online later this month, publisher Sony Online Entertainment has revealed.

According to Kotaku, a new episode sees you traversing Gotham's rooftops in pursuit of the mischievous feline. Turns out she's holed up in a museum and has transformed security guards into lions and tigers with the help of some ancient Egyptian relics. Suffice to say, you'll need to put things right.

The update also lets you play as Catwoman in the Legends PvP mode, adds a new multiplayer race and offers up new Ancient Mayan Armor and Cat Burglar gear.

Noobs beware, the episode is only playable by users who've hit level 30.

Fear not though, there's new content for less advanced players too. A Valentine's-themed addition sees Wonder Woman and Circe accidentally ticking off the Goddess of Love, who duly causes fountains to erupt across the city.

These fountains then provide access to 100-player instances where you'll be turned into a cherub and tasked with scrapping it out over the meaning of true love, before squaring off against the Goddess of Love, Devotion and Scorn in a four player bossfight.

Unlike the Catwoman content, it'll only be available until the end of the month.

The update also throws up a few more treats: you can now fight Bane in a two-player battle, there's a new eight-player Batcave raid, new collections, races and investigations, and the ability to trade equipment in the Watchtower or Hall of Doom.

According to director Chris Cao, SOE hopes to offer similar updates on a monthly basis.

DC Universe Online launched last month, scoring a modest 6/10 from Eurogamer's John Bedford.

    Awesome bunch of new content.

Nice. That's a hell of a lot of content. If they continue this every month like they said they will be then it more than justifies a monthly sub.

EG gets it wrong some times, but never has John Bedford been as out of touch with any review as he was with DCUO. The game is refreshing in so many ways, it reduces the worst parts of the MMO formula to something inconsequential and its worst flaw is only a UI navigation issue.

The combat is a refreshing change from looking at numbers while you hit abilities on cooldown and "move out of the fire", the customisation of characters is fantastic for those with the comic book bug and now they're showing they can bring real depth to the end-game for those who look for it. A 30-player "chase" across Gotham City rooftops culminating in a battle inside a museum with all kinds of zany comic book-esque antics going on is exactly what I expected from DCUO.

They shipped with PVP, the ability to actually PLAY as iconic superheroes without breaking too much suspension of disbelief, dungeons and a familiar levelling system that perhaps misses out on Cataclysms zone-wide epic narratives, which I happen to think adds a sense of comic book franticness to the whole experience anyway. All this and incredibly successful recreations of comic book locations and graphically the art style is superb.

If WoW opened up MMOs to the masses then DCUO is continuing that trend by delivering a new formula to those who find the WoW model unsuitable.

6/10 is a disappointment not just for the developers who are building momentum towards footing in a crowded market, not just to gamers who recognise a fun streamlined MMO in DCUO but also to readers of this website who have to witness you guys get it so utterly wrong.

Every reviewer gives a different score. I just finished Dead Space 2, which - in my opinion - is not worth 9 out of 10. I thought the story and dialogue were awful, and the focus on action makes it about as atmospheric as a picnic with Dale Winton. Great game on its on merits, some memorable moments but, not what I expected. I'm not wrong for disliking it, the reviewer isn't correct for liking it and vice-versa. It's all subjective; we're all different.

I am enjoying DCUO though, it's great fun. Hope this new content is worthwhile, I do love Catwoman. I look forward to seeing how the game evolves over time.

I like EG, but to be honest i havent disagreed with a review more since they reviewed chromehounds. Hopefully they will do a re-review sometime (hopefully by someone else, sorry john!)

The saddest thing about the review was the amount of comments along the lines of 'not buying then'.

Or even worse, the self proclaimed experts who hadn't even tried the game but thought they should tell the world that it would be 'total fail, 'f2p in six months' (because remember kids! A business model that quadruples your income isa sign of weakness!)" or 'dead on arrival'.

re the subjective thing, yes but it is the journalists job to have an informed opinion, I'm not saying that's less or more valid then anyone elses but it should be more well informed

The proximity of the review to the release concerned me. Either the review was based on the beta (which is daft as it's all subject to change), or it was based on less than a week's playtime of retail (once you factor in time needed for writing and editing).

Of course, EG will say "well that's why we do re-reviews for MMOs", but a lot of people go by the impressions given by an initial review and, to me, it's therefore important that enough time has been spent with the final code to accurately assess the game.

That, and the fact that all MMO reviews on EG seem to live in the shadow of WoW. DCU is not wow. Other than being an MMO it has nothing in common with it. Hell, the combat system has more in common with God of War than it does with wow.

For the first time I'm agreeing with everyone else! I also thought the review was slightly harsh, but put it down to being a comic geek.
DCUO is the first online game I've played in a long while that's kept me hooked for more than a few days. It's also the first that I'm interested in the quests and content (as daft and quick as they are). It does feel like a 30 page comic compared to WoW's (or LOTRO's or WAR's 500 page epics). Perfect for someone who can only play for an hour or two at a time because of harassment from the lady.

    Is this free content?

    Is this free content?

Yep. All content updates for DCUO will be free.

I played about 20 hours so far, I'm not a typical MMO guy cause I don't have the time.
I can tell you, I am really enjoying it very much, it is all you can ask from a super hero game!

Really want this game but just don't have time to play it. It's holding its price, despite not setting the charts alight, but I really can't justify a game that has cost £40 but has a month time limit to play it. I know there's a subscription but then that's £50 for a game I'll hardly ever play

Also got to throw in my two penneth worth, I think EG got this review wrong too. I've never got on with any MMO's really, and I've played plenty, just looking for the right one, and this is it! And if the content updates are going to be this good all the time, then that's just even better!
