Splinter Cell Trilogy release date

Sam Fisher gets PS3-only HD makeover.

Watch your backs, people - Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD quietly sneaks onto PlayStation 3 in the US on 22nd March, publisher Ubisoft has confirmed.

The bundle, which incorporates newly HDed versions of PlayStation 2 sneak 'em ups Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, will be available both as a retail disc or via download on PlayStation Network priced $39.99.

Following on the heals of last year's excellent Prince of Persia HD pack, Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy also includes support for integrated 3D stereoscopic view.

We're in touch with Ubisoft to pin down a firm European date, but Amazon.co.uk currently has it listed for 1st April on these shores.

Great news. Keep em comin', and I'll keep buyin',

    Wishlist:

Devil May Cry Trilogy (DMC2 was shite but, might as well include it.)

Kingdom Hearts Collection (The Final Mix versions)

    Silent Hill Quadrilogy

    Resident Evil Quadrilogy

Killer 7 was on my list but, I think the majority of people hate it so, I doubt it's on the cards. Okami would look stunning in HD.

Why PS3 only? What's the issue? Moneys Ubi, moneys!

p.s. if the online components are enabled then FUCKING BRING IT TO 360 NOW.

    PT online was pure gold.

Who would pay the same for download version as retail version? Not logical.

    @redsparrows

I doubt Ubi wanna pay MS extra cash for each additional game disc. All 3 games hardly fit on a 6.8GB DVD and MS do charge extra for each additional disc (makes their console look kinda inferior after all ^^).

I'd like to note that MS don't offer the required HD tools to remaster the games. It's different with complete remakes by scratch (BGaE), but HD-collections are most likely to stay PS3 exclusive ;)

  • Snake_2011 #11 1 year ago

great news now the GTA trilogy please Sony.
  • captain_Carl #12 1 year ago

PS3 only because, i believe, Sony makes it pretty easy for developers to get the tools to do it. All they ask in exchange is exclusivity. It's quite clever. They make it extremely easy for devs to make them, and ask for exclusivity in return.

I can already play in HD in 3D on my PC.

Surely in this case they will use the xbox versions as the base as there were visually better looking.
  • RedSparrows #14 1 year ago

You can't play them online any more, and if PS3 gets them online then I shall be grossly annoyed!

  • sonicyoda #15 1 year ago

Having never played these games, how different are the PS2 versions to the X-Box versions? Just want to know whether this collection is worth my time as I have all the others (Prince of Persia, Sly Raccon and God of War) and have thoroughly enjoyed playing the games I missed in the PS2 era.

Would really like to know how this translates to 3D! Could really add to the atmosphere.

Would love to get Chaos Theory, had the soundtrack forever but never the game.
  • Widge #17 1 year ago

The ps2 versions won't have been as technically good as the xbox ones, but no matter ... these should be getting the full glorious uplift!

AnsemsApprentice: Wow, great idea, I would so buy a blu ray containing Resi 0-4, including Code Veronica!!

"I hate playing on the PS2 it feels so retro."

You are joking right? Recently I've found more fun in my PS2 collection than I have on the current gen systems. Just a week ago I re-played Metal Gear Solid 3 with the 3D camera and it seriously puts MGS4 to shame. Not that MGS4 is a bad game, but the A.I, even though it's nearly 6 years old still outclasses other games. I was smoking a cigar whilst hanging off a tree and a gaurd actually smelt it and said something like "Smoke? Is that cigarettes?" before coming towards me and setting off an alert.

Not only that but graphically its still a stunner. I've got my PS2 hooked up via component and the games still look amazing. MGS doesn't even have a HD mode and it still looks fantastic. Beyond Good & Evil is over 8 years old but when played in progressive scan still looks stunning. Seriously, going back to last gen just shows how stagnated this gens games are. There's still some brilliant stuff, but no-one makes imaginitive games like they did last gen, and the PS2 is a treasure trove to pretty much every classic game out there.

So yes, I fail to see how playing the PS2 already feels retro. It's only one gen old, it won't be retro until the Nextbox and PS4. You should give it more credit and revisit some of the golden gems of gaming. I for one am happy with these HD remakes. It keeps classics alive, introduces them to a new generation and is the best kind of rose tinted specs. I really do hope we're treated to a Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Devil May Cry, Jak and Ratchet HD collection one day. There's probably a lot more I can't think of, but those games alone would make me a very happy gamer.

    ZOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HD please!!
  • darkmorgado #21 1 year ago

YAY! Let's pay for even more PS2 games because Sony decided to fuck us over by removing BC! Woohoo! Im so grateful!
  • Wildsleven #22 1 year ago

    project zero HD please :D

Check out ancient head to head between xbox and PS2, there were some big differences in parts, including the sound proof room with spikes all over but was just plain wall textures on PS2.

Also can still be playable on X360 and can be bought very cheaply whereas PS3 doesn't do PS2 since removal of the ability to play PS2.

That aside, hd remake or porting, is going well on PS3 and money are to be made, MS miss a good trick, as if people are willing to pay good money for old game with shiner graphics, So be it.

I won't be getting into Splinter Cell HD as sufficiently played the trilogy on the xbox, but would certainly wanna Ico HD, MSG, and what about FF PS2 HD?

If they can get ffx in 16:9 and no jaggies, that would be ace

  • Nozzinja #26 1 year ago

Don't you see, they're just getting ps3 owners ready for Splinter Cell: conviction :p
  • jackdoe #27 1 year ago

Ubisoft is probably the worst offender in regards to these PS3 re-releases while Sony has the best track record. Ubisoft releases a glitchy as hell game with minimal improvements (Prince of Persia Trilogy), while the Sony games like God of War Collection and the Team Ico collection actually look to improve on the original games. Which is a damn shame.

This Splinter Cell collection will be no different. You take the worst versions of Splinter Cell and port them to an HD console with minimal improvements. Great idea!

@darkmorgado: I fucking hate this sense of self-entitlement. Sony didn't take BC away from you through a firmware update (unlike Linux OS). You bought a PS3 without it when you could have easily bought one with BC. So you took it away from yourself. I wanted BC and I got BC (along with the premium price that I paid for the system) and I still have BC. If I wanted to wait for a price drop and get the PS3 for cheaper without BC, I sure as hell wouldn't go into every freaking PS2 collection thread and bitch about the lack of BC because I didn't want to chip in extra cash to get a system with BC.

I've got nothing against HD remakes. If you're afraid of cash cows, don't fucking buy the game. Vote with your wallet. No one is forcing you to buy anything you don't want to buy.

It seems not only Nintendo are good at rehashing old games. Still, these games are modern classics.

Not sure why you're harping on about BC. My console has BC and i still buy these.
  • andywilkie35 #32 1 year ago

Superb news. Just need the Final Fantasy, MGS, Jak and Ratchet collections and I'll be happy :)
  • metalmike25 #33 1 year ago

I'm all for this. Not a huge splinter cell fan but its essential to people who either didn't play it first time round or want an updated trilogy on one disc. I'm playing the Sly trilogy at the min and its so good. Especially since i missed out on them first time round
