Sony unveils PlayStation Suite for Android

"Legendary" PSone content heading to your phone.

Sony has announced PlayStation Suite, a new service which will deliver classic PSone content to Android smartphone devices.

Speaking at a press event in Tokyo, Sony boss Kaz Hirai promised that the service, which launches later this year, will bring "Legendary original PlayStation content" to mobiles. No specific titles were announced, but a snowboarding game was briefly demoed, with a virtual D-pad and buttons clearly displayed on the phone screen.

A service called PlayStation Certified will help developers with testing and quality assurance.

Hirai promised a "hardware-neutral game framework" that enables "PlayStation-quality" content to made for all kinds of mobile hardware.

"We envision PlayStation Suite as an initiative that is essential to the world of portable entertainment," he insisted.

We'll have more information on this story as it develops.

Yet only coming to Android mobiles and not either WM7 or iDevices?!

Wouldn't be surprised as Apple and MS are rivals but Android a partner? A huge back catalogue of PS1 puts into Androids mobile AND NGP is going to be an advantage.

It'll be terrible. I have an Android phone but wouldn't touch this. 'Virtual d-pad and buttons'? No thanks.

You guys are lame. This is fantastic for Android and just what it needs to kick iphone and win7 in the balls.

@GameConnoisseur Why no iphone or win7 support? Because sony dont own such a device. Android is where its at. It's the future. Get over it.

"All kinds of mobile hardware" = probably all kinds of hardware that runs the same Android OS like the PSP phone?

Sounds good to me - if it takes off we may see more devices with hardware game controls like the Xperia Play.
It's gonna be a bit of a battery killer though :(

With Sony Europe's track record with getting these things re-licensed, "Legendary" here will boil down to overpriced Tomb Raider games and bunch of Disney games.

Can already play playstation games on the android. The virtual pad really ruins it though.

@GamesConnoisseur: Google is Sony's partner (this has been announced quite a while ago), and they requested help for providing the Android with enticing software to compete with the App Store. It makes sense to me.

This is a good business idea. Sell more games on more devices.

Will have to wait and see how its implemented, but makes very good business sense.

Playstation emulators for Android - if you can't beat 'em, join ' em!

This is great news - means I'll be able to take advantage of the PlayStation Suite games but not have to get the rather bulky Xperia Play.

As long as analogue sticks aren't always needed, just give me a regular slide-out keyboard with a d-pad and I get the best of both worlds :)

Excellent news. PS games running native on a Motorola Atrix, connected and hooked up to a monitor via HDMI? Count me in.

If you've not seen what the Atrix is capable of, check out this video from CES 2011: [link url=http://www.viddler.com/explore/engadget/videos/2252/

Might even be able to use a Wiimote via bluetooth instead of having to use a wireless keyboard/mouse! Stunning stuff.
