Hydrophobia Listening Post launched

Will aid development of future games.

Hydrophobia developer Dark Energy Digital has launched a website designed to gather gamer feedback it'll use to aid the creation of future Hydrophobia games.

The Hydrophobia Listening Post allows users to rate every feature of Hydrophobia Pure, the new and improved version of Hydrophobia released December last year.

The information gathered will help the Manchester studio develop future games in the Hydrophobia universe, it said this morning.

"We launched Hydrophobia Pure after conducting extensive research into the issues players and critics had and the features you wanted to see included," joint creative director Pete Jones said.

"We were absolutely blown away by the response you gave us, and the reception Hydrophobia Pure received. We believe there should be a two way relationship between developer and players, and as such we are committed to continuing the philosophy of collecting and acting upon your feedback to our games."

Simon Parkin awarded Hydrophobia 4/10 in Eurogamer's review. The reception to the watery Xbox Live Arcade game sparked DED into releasing a title update designed to answer criticism from both reviewers and gamers.

please re-review this game. the rejigged version is outstanding and I haven't had a single "argh, someone shoot the designer" moment while playing it.

they deserve mucho kudos for listening to complaints and doing something about it, too.

Yup - I would like a re-review of this too - would be good to know just how much they listened.

    Agreed.

    Re-review please.

    Yeah! Re-review! Re-review! Re-review! Re-review! Re-review! Re-review! RE-REVIEW!

    Sod the re-review, where's the PS3 version?

Will likely not buy the game but would still love to see a second opinion post patch by the original reviewer.

I don't like the idea that EG'ers need to rely on each other for advice on whether to buy the game because the review that the staff have put up is obsolete. Granted, a patch here and there isn't going to merit a re-review, but this was supposed to be such a radical overhaul that it's no longer the same game.

Edit: and the process of listening to fan criticism and carrying out their wishes is a behaviour we'd like to encourage. Better sales would do that. The game would get the sales it deserves if the review score accurately represents the game.

will definitely be picking this one up in the XBLA sale next week.

400 points next week for XBL gold members. Also re-review. I totally disliked the original release but it is a much better game now.

If they've got a voice actor who's actually been to Scotland to replace Scoot, I'm in. I'd have happily played more of the original version if his vocal butchery had not left me wanting to remove my ear drums with a rusty spear.

Edit: I'd even say that I quite enjoyed the demo, but couldn't bring myself to lay down cash after hearing.... that. *shudders*

Someone makes a bad game, then not only re-does it but makes a real effort to listen to what was wrong the first time? They deserve praise just for that.

I'm glad the comments reinforced the fact that Hydrophobia is 400 points next week - I'm not sure whether the EG article is allowed to state such things, but such a piece of information would surely be pertinent to this story, unless you're planning a whole separate article for it, I suppose :/

I would also like to see a re-review.

A (short) re-review with updated score would be greatly appreciated to coincide with next week's sale price. If the fixes pushed this somewhere to a 7/10 mark then I could very well be splashing my cash come the sale....

As stated by several others in this thread I would like a re-review, not only in light of the upcoming sale (they'd already dropped the price from 1200 to 800MSP when the patch was released, which had got me interested) but because I think DED deserve it for listening to their customers and acting upon the feedback.

In the meantime, is there anybody out there who picked up the game originally and has played through the Pure version who fancies highlighting in a bit more detail whether it's now worth a punt?

Am I right in thinking that the demo pulls down the Pure update, if so I guess I can rate it myself? :-)

Either way with Amazon doing 2100MSP for £14.99 this equates to £2.86 in the sale - I've lost more cash down the back of the sofa so this will be a definite purchase. :-P

Do all games which are bad and get patched deserve a re review?

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see a re review of this but just asking the question.
  • RichyRichh77 #16 1 year ago

If a patch simply fixes a shed load of bugs then I wouldn't expect a re-review but this patch suggests that entire areas of the game have been restructured/redesigned including control system, cameras etc etc.

    New version is great.

    Well played devs!
