Metal Gear Solid next for HD revamp?

Facelift rumoured for first three titles.

The first three Metal Gear Solid games are the next oldies lining up for an increasingly fashionable HD makeover, according to insider sources.

CVG has reported that the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine has the scoop, but doesn't offer any further details as to when we might see the games, how they will be delivered or whether they'll be exclusive to PlayStation 3.

The titles referred to by OPM would presumably be the 1998 PSone original, 2002 PlayStation 2 follow-up Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater from 2004.

We've contacted Konami for comment and will update if it confirms or denies.

One Metal Gear Solid remake has been confirmed by the publisher though – the upcoming 3DS take on Snake Eater – while Metal Gear Solid: Rising, due next year on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, should sate the appetites of those after something new.

The Splinter Cell, God of War, Prince of Persia and Sly Cooper franchises have all been given a fresh lick of HD paint recently, with Ubisoft's 2003 cult classic Beyond Good & Evil next in line for re-appraisal when it hits Xbox Live Arcade in February.

If it comes it will be a PS3 exclusive. The reason for this is the same reason all the other HD packs are exclusives. Sony is providing the tools to transition PS2 games to the PS3.

I hope if it is true then the third game is the Subsistence version. It's pretty damn dear on ebay.

LOL - If I use this on my website do I have to say that "Eurogamer has seen that CVG has reported that the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine has the scoop"

    'Journalism' at its very best.

Oh dear god yes. Please use Twin Snakes for the basis of the MGS1 remake while you're at it, too.

The SLY Cooper HD update was amazing.

I'm so over this when it come sout.

    "HD, what happened? HD?? HDD?????!!???!"

  • Mughes #9 1 year ago

Pretty inevitable given the recent trend in HD re-releases. This is the one I've been most eager for though, along with Team Ico's.

They'd better not omit the Subsistence camera from MGS3 though. I found it damn near unplayable without it.

It is funny, but in news reporting you do have to state your source of the news, for example the BBC quote Reuters all the time etc... thats life.
  • coomber #11 1 year ago

I wish they'd remake the original Metal Gear games instead (the two before Metal Gear Solid).
  • SeesThroughAll #12 1 year ago

@jackdoe: Not in this case, though. MGS1 was a PS1 game. That one should be remade in the MGS4 engine. (Kojima, you're such a tease.)

Having said that, I don't see anything wrong with releasing this collection on both HD consoles. The more people can enjoy the best titles in the MGS series, the better :)
  • CaoSlayer #13 1 year ago

I hope this time they keep the awesome spanish dub unlike twins snakes.
  • waynenot #14 1 year ago

@makeamazing - it was the fact that they had quoted a source for the source that I found funny.

Im also hoping for the Twin Snakes version of MGS1, It included a lot of gameplay improvements from MGS2 (hiding over ledges, first person targeting etc)
  • Emmit_Assassin #16 1 year ago

I hope they do bring it out on the 360 as well. Would love to play through it again if I don't pick up a PS3 this year.
  • dsmx #17 1 year ago

I feel this is the place to inform people that I have the full 3 disk version of subsitance on the ps2 :p and no you can't have it.
  • FuzzyDuck #18 1 year ago

MGS 1 is still the series' highlight, would defo pick this up.

And if Capcom are reading, a Clover Studio compilation would do more than nicely.
  • jackdoe #19 1 year ago

@Emmit_Assassin: Only way it would be on the 360 as well is if Konami doesn't use the tools provided by Sony. Which would cost more to convert. It could happen, but it isn't likely.
  • Mughes #20 1 year ago

MS have already made it clear HD re-releases aren't a priority for them.

Restore MGSII with all the stuff censored as a result of 9/11 and i'm in.

[while Snake crosses the canyon, Raven appears in an M1 tank]
Vulcan Raven: This is Raven's territory... Snakes don't belong in Alaska... I will not let you pass...
    [to the tank gunner]
Vulcan Raven: Send him a message.
[the tank cannon fires at Snake, who dodges the blast]
Vulcan Raven: Ha ha ha ha ha... That's right... You belong on the ground. You should crawl on the ground like the snake you are.

Vulcan Raven, Sniper Wolf, Psycho Mantis, Liquid... that was a more charismatic cast than the MGS4 bosses... topless fight with Liquid on the top of Metal Gear's head... This game was so good, from the beginning when you arrived underwater... FoxHound forever!
  • kgthatsme #23 1 year ago

I think Snake Eater would look beautiful in HD
  • romelpotter #24 1 year ago

hmmm Sony remove BC capability from PS3 and then release HD remakes of PS 1 and 2 games!

    Call me cynical!

Edit - Just to add that I love MGS, it is without a doubt my game on my lifetime but I just don't like getting butt shafted. I do conceade that this is my own opinion and others may differ

Edit 2 - Hang on, wasn't Metal Gear Solid a 3d remake of Metal Gear?

  • NewbieZilla #25 1 year ago

Yeah, agreed on wanting 3 to be Subsistence. It is far better than the Snake Eater version. The best MGS of the first 3. Don't want to put one over between it and 4.
  • Gojiratron #26 1 year ago

This would be one sweet package and hopefully we'll see the additional VR Missions, Substance and Subsistence content included as well.
  • sfp_noodle #27 1 year ago

MGS2 must be the Substance disc. It wouldn't make sense otherwise. MGS3 must also use the Subsistence camera as many have mentioned. I actually just finished playing MGS3 with the 3D camera for the first time a few days ago and it makes such a massive difference. Still looks amazingly good on my HDTV through component. Easilly the best MGS game for me, even better gameplay wise than MGS4, which I felt was a little too easy.

Perhaps this will finally make Kojima issue a trophy patch for MGS4 as trophies for older MGS games will make the 4th game look a little stupid. It would not make sense. Finally, even though Konami is starting to develop MGS games multiplatform now they won't release this on the 360 for two reasons. First - It will cost them a lot more to provide multiple discs and I don't think they want to do that. They'd also have to re-code in game commands that previously used the Playstation buttons. Secondly, and perhaps crucially, MS have clearly stated they have no interest in HD re-makes and have no tools that would help devs to port old games. Also, MGS3 was a PS2 exclusive so it's highly likely they'd have to create new code for it to run on the 360 hardware. A headache I'm sure Konami could do without.

Given how well MGS4 sold (over 5 million), I don't think Konami is too fussed about keeping this exclusive to PS3. It would sell massively regardless.

"Edit 2 - Hang on, wasn't Metal Gear Solid a 3d remake of Metal Gear? "

    No.
  • Markitron #29 1 year ago

Seems to be some negativity toward twin snakes Any particular reason why? I'm genuinely curious, I loved the original and thought silicon knights did a great update
  • SeesThroughAll #30 1 year ago

Hang on, wasn't Metal Gear Solid a 3d remake of Metal Gear?

The villain of Metal Gear was Big Boss. Metal Gear Solid was a sequel to the two original games.
  • Cyclone #31 1 year ago

It some ways it was. Unfortunately they went overboard with some of the stylistic changes in the cutscenes (Snake having a little bit of a fit, and pulling a gun on Baker because he forgot the codec code, Snake jumping on the missile, etc.), which detracted from the game a bit. If they do revamp MGS1 I'd hope for a version that uses many of the textures and models from the Twin Snakes, and that uses the rest of the material from the original version.
  • Markitron #32 1 year ago

Fair enough point. Have a feeling it's gonna be the original, I'm sure nintendo have some kind of old publishing rights or something
  • sfp_noodle #33 1 year ago

This is my guess - A PSN voucher for the original, a Blu-Ray of MGS2 and 3 and if they want to do a full collection then MGS4 will be bundled too. Price it at £39.99 and it'll shift like a topless Cheryl Cole poster.

For fook sake I have just sold my ps3 (the second one) if they do this and RE (first 3/4 games) then I'm going to have to purchase for a third time ;)
  • JamieR #35 1 year ago

Ok this excites me if this is true im gonna play though them all in order and its gonna be sweet because ive not done so in a while.
  • Widge #36 1 year ago

Thank god Sony removed BC, now we can have these games customly remade in 16:9 with enhanced graphics and sound.
  • VandelayIndustries #37 1 year ago

Don't like this approach then don't buy them, It's all very simple. I missed most of these games bar Splinter cell so I'm all for it.
  • NotSoSlim #38 1 year ago

People still moan about re-makes? Classic games getting re made with some at 60fps as well as upgraded graphics at a low price. The amount of people who missed out on the likes Ico and Shadow of the Colossus is large so releasing them is a bonus as buying them now will; set you back well over £60 even if there was BC in the PS3.
  • Climhazzard #39 1 year ago

Oh god yes please let this happen.
  • Mughes #40 1 year ago

"I want to play PS2 games when I want"

If only there was a machine available that allowed you to do that.
  • tomjoadsghost #41 1 year ago

well, if they're going to do it i'd appreciate it if they'd announce it soon - i was planning on having another attempt to get through MGS2 again soon, but now i'll wait and see if this haitch-dee pack is actually forthcoming.
  • Mughes #42 1 year ago

So wait, you have over 50 PS2 games but no PS2?
  • Dizzy #43 1 year ago

Well at least it is cheap to make.
  • Soton4084 #44 1 year ago

They would be stupid not to!
  • X3Entente #45 1 year ago

but will twin snakes be used instead, if so rebalance the 1st person mode. and use the audio and voice acting from the original because twin snakes audio is embarassingly bad, and the cutscenes are nauseating. but guys if you want an enhanced version of the original, play it on ePSXe. For a ps1 game the graphics are mind blowing with everything maxed up

Oh The joy of Driffter. A thread wouldn't be a thread if it didn't have Driffter moaning about BC.

Would something like this make you angry... 60gig Launch PS3 & lots of lovely PS2 loveliness... :)

@kj66246: You bought the Move too? What's your impression on it? Found any decent games for it?
  • KayJay #51 1 year ago

Its a little slow for games tbh. But I have enjoyed Tumble & Flight Control. RE5 was okay and I co-op'ed with another EG'er and it all worked really well.
Sports Champion takes the Gold though :) - really great fun and at times really quite difficult.

I am really excited for KZ3, Socom & Sorcery (?), I enjoyed MAG and the implementation of Move really was great, you could tweak almost everything about it to get it feeling just right, But the game itself didn't click for me, with or without Move... :/

edit: Oh & I have Heavy Rain sitting here waiting to be played.
I know I know. "Get on and Play it" But i think its probably going to be one of those games that I have to be in the mood for. I dont think I have quite hit the right mood yet. But I think I will be giving it a go with the Move.

  • layleeloo #57 1 year ago

First one may be ok. Second they can leave thanks. As for the 3rd, so long as its the Subsistence version and not the utterly wank original version
  • mumblyjoe #58 1 year ago

This would be pretty damn awesome

Going back to shadow moses was pretty cool in mgs4
  • MrE26 #59 1 year ago

"Oh dear god yes. Please use Twin Snakes for the basis of the MGS1 remake while you're at it, too."

Please don't. The improved visuals & gameplay additions were nice, but the cutscenes were awful & the new music wasn't a patch on the original. Original please!
  • SniperZoz #60 1 year ago

The original MGS trilogy in HD on the 360 ... YES PLEASE!
  • Collymilad #61 1 year ago

    Will probably be PS3 exclusive.

MS, get your fucking finger out, eh?
  • uzivatel #62 1 year ago

Another HD version? I guess its good since the once important BC is missing, then again I doubt the PS2 games I wanted to play are going to be re-released ... ever.

@TheDriffter: then again all 60GBs are going to die sooner or later and afaik Sony is not replacing them with BC units.

Dont forget MGS is 13 years old now (OMG) So I imagine there are absolutely tons of gamers who never got to play this classic cos they were like 2 years old lol.

    God im old now =(
  • bluetoothion #64 1 year ago

Awwww i remember the days i played MGS 1 in 1998 .....shut up dad the game came out 2012 sign.....

The moment MGS 4 played on the shadow moses was really epic...the sense of aging and abandoment it reminded you of how many years its been...i think it was more targetting the players rather the snake himself it put the sense of time with your character and it was exceptionally pulled through. Perhaps its a game worth playing but kojima wont reach to new people the same way as those who were there in the beginning.
