SSFIV PC: Capcom "cautiously optimistic"

US boss continues to push.

Capcom has given PC gamers a glimmer of hope that a Windows version of stupendous fighting game Super Street Fighter IV may one day see the light of day.

The company's US boss said he was "cautiously optimistic" that a PC version of SSFIV may materialise despite the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions having launched over eight months ago.

"I think the guys that read [the Capcom-Unity forum thread] 'Ask Capcom' frequently know that I am a die-hard, die-hard PC gamer and I've continued to push for the existence of a Street Fighter IV PC," Christian Svensson, VP of strategic planning and business development, said in a streamed question and answer session.

"I've always said the answer is 'no' until it becomes 'yes,' and let's just say I've not given up pushing, and maybe at some point in the future we could change that question to, 'Why did it take so long,' instead of, 'Why is there no...'.

"Unfortunately, we can't do that yet, but I'm still cautiously optimistic."

A PC version of the game has looked unlikely. Last year producer Yoshinori Ono said Capcom were put off of releasing the game on PC after Street Fighter IV suffered from piracy – despite a compatible version being 99 per cent complete.

Super Street Fighter IV launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in April. Eurogamer's Simon Parkin gave it 10/10.

I thought SFIV sold pretty well on the PC thanks to a Steam release?
  • orangpelupa #2 1 year ago

maybe these game developers never count digital sales as real sales? O_o

    @Haloboy!

Yeah, it did. Long story short: it seems Capcom must be allergic to money or something since there doesn't seems to be any business explanation for turning down all the money a PC version of SSFIV would earn them.

You been reading my forum posts EG? I posted on this yesterday! :)

Yeah Sven teased recently Capcom DO have plans for PC and "all will be made clear" and Ono has been teasing quite a lot on Twitter. There is a rumour going around that the piracy issue was in regard to the arcade version (which is the PC version more or less) where people where putting the PC version of SF4 into much cheaper cabinets screwing over Capcom on their much more expensive official cabinets.

It certainly is encouraging that they seem to be supporting the PC still as it did look like they dropped us rather coldly. Just hurry up with Super please Capcom, I scrubbed your games off my wanted list when you snubbed us but Dead Rising 2 has been fixed to work with the wireless windows pad now so I want to buy it and can't until you sort me out my SSF4!

"No, no, we will NEVER release a PC version of the game. If you want to play it, buy it on 360 or PS3"

"Why, yes, we were avid pc gamers all the time, it may or may not be released on PC, let's see what I can do *wink wink* *nudge nudge*"

"(Gets released on steam) This is the ultimate version of the game, the way it's meant to be played!!! It's cheaper than console, so you may as well buy it again!!! IT INCLUDES 5 GRAPHICAL FILTERS!!! This is our way to show our respect and devotion to you guys"

It did sell very well on Steam, it continues to do well. It's a rare day that I don't see someone on my Steam Friends list playing it, even several years later.

If you don't want to release a game because you're worried it'll get pirated, then get out of the games business and go into shoe repair or something. If it can be pirated, it will get pirated. And just keeping it off PC won't solve that as the 360 version's been pirated loads of times. They just can't be bothered to put the effort in to market it.

The indecision has cost them sale so far.

I don't mind if SSFIV doesn't come out, I'll just buy the original. But I don't want to do that if they're gonna announce Super the week after I buy it.

    Make it happen please!!!

Don't punish us for Lost Planet 2 Capcom. That was your own fault.

Thing is Haloboy! I would have actually gone for LP2 if they didn't snub us on SSF4. I know on the consoles it got panned but the benchmark they released was beautiful and I was really interested in it.

Capcom you goons. You once stated it was possible to do cross-platform gaming, that will make SSF pwnz everything.

If Blazlue can do it, you can do it!

There is also the issue of cost-benefit analysis as well - Capcom's SF dev team could work on the PC port... but they're also working on the 3DS version, the updates to the iPhone version and the console Arcade Edition versions. Not to mention Street Fighter vs Tekken. They can only spread themselves so thin.

Also throw in the fact that MvC3 is due for release next month, and SF3 Online Edition to be released soon after.

My favorite line at dates as well...

If we are waiting much longer, just do a PC version of Street Fighter x Tekken instead.

I'm pretty sure capcom are holding off until the new characters are released and releasing a PC version with all the new characters. SF4 sold well on the PC but the DLC didn't (probably because it was crap).
