Crackdown 2 dev working on new games

"High action, visceral" with an online focus.

Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian Games is working on new games and it's really excited about them.

The Scottish studio describes them as "high action, visceral titles" that are "heavily focused on online".

In a blog post titled Hunting for Programmers, studio head Gaz Liddon acknowledged the lack of detail provided.

"Since completing Ruffian's first born, Crackdown 2, we've now moved onto a couple of new games," he said.

"Rather boringly as is the case for most nascent projects we're unable to talk about them in any detail right now."

Crackdown 2 launched to critical and commercial success last summer. Eurogamer awarded it 8/10, and it debuted at number one in the UK all-formats chart.

Is Ruffian working on a third Crackdown game?

I'd be happier without the heavy online element really.

Eurogamer must have only played it for 2 hours if they gave it an 8. I wanted to love it, but my god it was such a half arsed pile of repetitive tosh.

    Please do something new.

As much as I like Crackdown I'd rather see a proper new IP.

So, without wishing to sound overly pessimistic, they're attempting to make the same kind of games that every other developer in the world is attempting to make?

High action, visceral and with an online focus... again. I'd kill to hear one company say 'You know, we loved Demon's Souls and its slow paced, tactile approach to combat. We'd love to do something equally strategic and rewarding, since nobody else seems to want that slice of the market'.

Crackdown 2 was awful. I don't expect anything much from a studio that ruined such a brilliant original game.

Crackdown 2 really was incredibly repetitive. I was so glad that I finally had all the missions done to go orb hunting but by the time I just couldn't motivate myself to look at the city any more. CD1 was much better, in every respect.

Maybe Ruffian can at least use their experience gained to create something enjoyable. I just hope that they don't intend to continue the shitty story from CD2 like they teased in the credits.

Are Ruffian owned by MS, or did MS just commission them to make CD2?

Planning on picking CD2 up later this year, cheap, after I clear some backlog games.

Crackdown 2 was extremely repetitive, no doubt. But once you settled into a certain groove it became strangely compelling, in a similar way to Dead Rising. It seems to divide opinions very strongly overall.

Good news for Dundee/Scottish games industry after some of the big companies having to cut staff. It'll be interesting to see if they expand the other areas of their team too :)

Maybe they should try making Crackdown 2? That mission pack they made didn't deserve release.

This time they will reskin pacific city with even more decay and give us even less content.

    High action, online game?

Please Ruffian, don't turn into your predecessors.

crackdown 2 was a disgrace imo

It seems that nowadays everyone and their dog wants to develop a game with an online focus, not realising that it's impossible to play a billion games with an online focus in one year

Well come back when you have something to say and stop wasting our time. Might as well say "games developer, developing games, will come out at some point in the future"

    Pointless!!!

'yup', 'yup', 'yep' and 'yes' on the no vote for heavy on-line elements.

Practically every single player game now has a tacked on on-line element. After 3 months all that's left in the lobbies for half of these are 3 crazed loners who can lob grenades blind halfway across the map onto re-spawn points and a couple of 'tourists' wondering around with no intention of doing anything more than having a quick look before they head back to one of the mega-franchises...!

Not every game needs this, thanks.

EDIT: don't seem to be able to make this make sense. nevermind.

Microsoft want 30% of achievements online or from dlc which is really annoying as it is either impossible to complete a game to 100% or costly.

Although it is quite clever from the point of generating extra revenue.

Never liked the moving orbs either. Even with everything maxed they are just annoyingly frustrating to get.

By the way, once thing I noticed but never asked: Why do you get to choose your agent's face when you are always wearing a helmet anyway? At least I cannot remember a single time when I had nothing on my head :)

Well CD2 wasn't exactly a stellar success, and the name is owned by MS I think, so CD3 seems unlikely... Anyway Ruffian seems to be sticking to their strengths, so more power to 'em. I just hope they avoid some of the big errors mving from CD to CD2: no bosses, wut? Pvp zomg? Story much? Take a leaf from Red Dead's playbook, that's where I would look for inspiration...
