Is Razer revolutionising game notebooks?
Combines tactile keys, multi-touch LCD.
Razer has taken a tactile keyboard and a multi-touch screen and stuck them together to make a teensy notebook that runs all your favourite games.
The neat black notebook - with bold green Razer squiggle - is roughly the size of an iPad when folded out, and could, at a squeeze, fit in a back pocket or large side pocket when folded together.
The tactile keyboard means the rows of blank, raised keys can change to suit whatever you're doing. If you're playing Quake they'll show the logos of whatever controls you've mapped to your preferred keys. If you're playing World of Warcraft they'll show all your skills, abilities, icons and whatever else you press when you play.
The multi-touch screen acts as your mouse.
The idea is that you customise lay-outs for each application - a tiring process Razer will help by offering generic templates for download.
Theoretically; you see, the Razer Switchblade (a codename) is a concept machine - it hasn't been made in bulk to be sold. Therefore there's no price associated with it. Nevertheless, it's on display at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, alongside a raft of other gadgetry the event attracts.
Other theoretical specifications include Wi-Fi/3G connections, Windows 7 OS, Mini HDMI/USB 3/Headphone/Mic ports. The size, on paper, is 172mm x 115mm x 25 mm.
Get off, it's mine.
This time in motion.

As someone who spends a lot of time working away and living out of hotels and B&B's, something like this would be awesome. Right now my Netbook isnt up to playing any modern games, and anything bigger starts becoming hard to pack. If this actually makes it to retail at a not-too-stupid price, it could answer a lot of my needs.

It'll be bloody expensive but is the coolest thing at CES so far.

It's a nice idea. But I just can't see this being a better alternative to a laptop. I just don't the solution will be elegant enough to enjoy playing games on it.

Generally speaking there is a lot more going on in your average PC game than a console game. I have an Alienware M11X, which is an 11 inch screen laptop. It's a fantastic piece of kit, and very good for over-the-shoulder shooters or FPSs like Team Fortress or Mass Effect 2. I can even enjoy WoW on it, but I tried a multiplayer game of SC2 once on it and promptly got my ass kicked because the screen was simply too small for me to see what was going on.
Can't imagine this situation would improve with such a small device. Colour me interested, but nothing more...

The cost of (O)LED keyboards is astronomical.

True, the guy is a designer aswell and demands a certain premium for his products but still.
No way Razer is implementing anything close to what is written in the probable spec sheet in eons.
Anyone, well almost anyone, can dream up some futuristic concepts of what gaming might look like. Doesnt mean they are doable.

That picture of it playing WoW seems to be missing about 18,000 buttons.
Not really, the bottom keyboard for most of your moving about and whatnot and the hotbars on the top touchscreen for your spells, it's what I've been wanting for ages and I'd get it tomorrow (preferably with a bigger screen) if it was on sale.
