DS the best-selling console ever in US

Shifts more than 47 million in North America.

Nintendo's DS is the best-selling console ever in the US.

According to Nintendo's internal sales figures, the DS family of systems has sold more than 47 million units in the US since the original model launched in November 2004.

The Wii recorded sales of more than seven million in its third calendar year in the US – a feat never before accomplished in the history of videogames by a home console. The Wii has sold more than 34 million in the United States alone.

"When we look back at 2010, we see consumers time and again turning to the value and enjoyment of our products," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

"When we look ahead to 2011, we see new portable technology and more great Wii games that need to be seen to be believed."

Nintendo's impressive sales figures come at a time when many are looking forward to the launch of the 3DS and news of the inevitable Wii 2.

November last year Reggie said there were no plans to launch a 'Wii 2' next Christmas.

"As we sit here today we're saying the Wii has many, many more units to sell," he explained.

"After we've reached an installed base of 45 million here in the US, we can have a conversation about the next generation."

Only 11 million to go!
