Yamauchi to upgrade GT5 standard cars

To beef up the 200-odd premium flock.

More cars in the Gran Turismo 5 garage are to be given the premium treatment, according to creator Kazunori Yamauchi - which means they'll soon be more detailed and allow an interior view.

Of that garage, 811 of the 1031 vehicles are only available in standard form.

Yamauchi, talking to Famitsu magazine (read by Andriasang), didn't say how many would be updated, but clearly he has a mountain of material to work with. He also didn't give a timeframe for the update.

Still, there are plenty of premium cars to be getting on with for the time being - even if they only represent around 20 per cent of the game's total.

Gran Turismo 5, released at the end of November, was worth the wait. Oli "Nigel Mansell" Welsh delivered the verdict for Eurogamer.

Spain's GT5 launch was glitzier than the UK's.

Can't wait to get this in about 10 years then.

*sigh* i was joking, y'know. I love GT5 as much as anyone else.

Well done. They have stuck to their word as far as updating as they go along... goes.

well, I think he is obsessed with his creations and that is very good news, I have GT5 but struggling to progress GT Mode (don't have the required cars in my garage to enter the events available) and the AI is a bit wonkey. Overall though Im happy with my purchase and look forward to furthur updates......
  • Kuraditosin #9 1 year ago

This is good news indeed...but why wasn't this included in the final game? Why the 800-200 decision in the first place? I do hope they concentrate on the manufacturers that are least presented atm, like Aston Martin (1 premium DBS??).
Also maybe now you could pleaaaaaseeeee give Veyron the premium treatment.. . It's utterly silly that one of the fastest cars in the game looks like a cube.
So far the updates have been for free...here's hoping this one will be as well.
  • NeoKenzi #10 1 year ago

This can only be a good thing... Hopefully it will be "Free" after waiting 5 Years... Lol... Still loving this game though but the licences are quite tough!
  • Skurmedel #11 1 year ago

Wee more cars. Anybody else got the "Stealth" pre-order Mercedes? I got it even though I didn't pre-order, glitch in the webshop or something.
  • OnlyMe #12 1 year ago

I seriously doubt we'll have to pay to make cars we already have in the game look prettier.
  • natashaspice #13 1 year ago

Keep it coming. No complaints here as long as its free.
  • GamesProgrammer Verified Games Team Programmer, Eutechnyx Ltd. #14 1 year ago

i should expect it to be free, but then again its no small task, so by the time it actually lands there may only be the hardcore still playing regularly and paying for it might not feel to bad for them if they really want them.

Im looking forward more to the online updates and hopefully new special events, and the Bspec mode playable from the website.
  • beastmaster #15 1 year ago

Perhaps it was the plan to have them all as premium but it couldn't be done because of time constraints.
  • Mkwone #16 1 year ago

I wonder how-if at all this will affect the dealership situation. As it stands it's premium in the dealership and standard in the ever changing used.

Would making them all premium allow them to be bought new, or would there still be used...or a mixture of both with new 0 mile versions available to buy new and at full price and cheaper used versions which may need the engine or chassis fixing?
  • RevanNL #17 1 year ago

Here's an insane idea: how about giving the Bugatti Veyron the Premium treatment?
  • Retro_ #18 1 year ago

    205 GTi 1.6 & 1.9 and 1.4 Rallye please
  • Mcstrife #19 1 year ago

I'd rather see extra special events. I barely notice the standard cars anymore (although once in a while I see one with horiibly jagged headlights)
  • Felwyn #20 1 year ago

Anyone complaining about standard cars has obviously not played the game long enough to know that extra premium cars are the last thing GT5 needs as far as updates are concerned.

Can you enjoy premium cars you can't buy because you have to grind exp to reach that car's level or grind even more for cash because the prizes for winning are laughable..?

  • effinjamie #21 1 year ago

Would much rather them spend the time updating the online portion of the game. Gives us leaderboards with updates of friends times, it's only a spreadsheet for fucks sake!
  • homerramone #22 1 year ago

I can get my head around the lack of incar view. (Tho i expected better after 5 years...)
What I cant comprehend is why the 'bonnet' view, which my preferred one is different between standard and premium.
For premium this is like having the camera somewhere on the windsreen...
However for the standard cars the 'bonnet' camera seems to be on the roof, making every car feel like your in a Land Rover !

(I also find it somewhat dismaying that with sooo many car its so hard to find a model you want with the cars at the used car dealer being mostly the same from visit to visit)

  • 00.00.01 #23 1 year ago

    @Felwyn 15/12/10 @ 10:32
Get yerself a Lambo and do the Lambo-only race in 'Professional' a few times, it's only a 3-lap race in Rome. Racing B-spec (and winning everything on Gold) helps ye boost cash and P-cars as well.
  • TheNinkyNonk #24 1 year ago

Modeo ST220 please. One of the greatest FWD saloons ever made yet constantly ignored in driving games :(
  • king26 #25 1 year ago

It's free of charge. IT has to be!!
  • Kuraditosin #26 1 year ago

Anyone complaining about not having enough money - just do the easier races.
For example use the Veyron you get at some point as a prize, tune it up all the way to the 1150ish bhp cap, slap on some soft racing tyres; or use any insanely fast car you might have. Then enter the Polyphony Digital cup - the most diverse and easy way to get money - around 200 000 cr in 30 minutes (32k+32k+32k and 98k for winning the cup).
Or if you're up to the grind, just do the cups' very first race - can be completed in just under 4 minutes with 32 000 cr and a decent amount of exp alongside.
    Anyway that's what I did to get my hands on a R10 V12 LMP1 car (Y).
  • Sunworship #27 1 year ago

So work doggedly continues on extremely time intensive assets which will add little to the game experience: it's the polyphony way!

How about doing something that will update the *gameplay* to this gen, so it doesn't feel like an HD remake of GT2?

User-created on and offline tournaments anyone?
  • patootik #28 1 year ago

Someone already mentioned it but yes the Veyron, absolutely loving GT5 but seriously one of the most powerful, desirable and recognizable cars in the world, let alone the game and it's not premium, I couldnt believe it.

I know I could win just about any race with the Veyron at full spec but I'm not interested, it's hard to go back once youve had the premium cockpit view.

Hope this is free and comes soon!
  • darkphoenix #29 1 year ago

Mazda Furai and Bugatti Veyron in HD, please.
Also, where are the Ferrari F50, FXX, Lambo Diablo, Reventon,....
  • banjo21 #30 1 year ago

    Whats the point?
surely 99.9% of people use the bumper view - i.e. dials only.

Put the work in to the on-line experience.

  • Kuraditosin #31 1 year ago

banjo21, I for one use the cockpit view whenever possible. GT5 is the only game where I'm comfortable with that viewpoint. Which makes me even more disappointed in that I can only do so with 200 vehicles.
The bumper view would be the last one I'd use, no way to distinguish how wide the car is and where it'll fit through when passing several competitors.
Whenever cockpit cam isn't available, I prefer the bonnet view. I might be one of the few, but I'm sure there are some others who would like all cars to have interior cameras.
  • banjo21 #32 1 year ago

    @Kura
understood. But 200 cars with cockpit views increased to 300, or being able to select a lobby of type 300bhp or less on circuit courses. I know where I'd like the effort to go.
  • lockload #33 1 year ago

Basically he will now finish the game

How about adding damage? and i dont mean the current simple damage graphics model but the actual mechanical car damage model

How can a sim not have it?

  • Cataferal #34 1 year ago

^ Hate to say it, but I think that might be a lost cause for GT5. It'd involve the kind of fundamental overhaul of the graphics engine that GT6 is probably shooting for. Just imagine the size of that patch...

I agree that the lack of visual damage (and the absence of collision sounds besides a dull thud) can be very uncanny, especially given how much the game gets the other aspects of car simulation right. Missed opportunity.

  • Stop-gap #35 1 year ago

For the same reason there doesn't seem to be qualifying anywhere in GT5 either, lock?

I'd rather see what's already there get some love before they go dropping more cars in. 1000+ is enough, improve the game they're in first please.

edit, also can we get some road noise in too? The sound of an engine hovering through the air is a bit "weak-sauce".

  • Darren #38 1 year ago

It's laughable really to hear the developer talking about finishing a game that has already been in development for the best part of six years and was basically released either unfinished or with bizarrely inconsistent visuals depending on how disappointed you are in the game. I suspect that had the game been delayed in order to finish it properly that Forza Motorsports 4, the third sequel since GT5 was announced, would have still come out before it! Are Polyphony Digital a three-man team or something?!?
  • Rodster #39 1 year ago

I guess now's not the time to say I only use bumper cam even with the premium cars. :-D
  • yegon #40 1 year ago

    >>>I guess now's not the time to say I only use bumper cam even with the premium cars. :-D

Same here. Since I got a wheel, it seems utterly retarded to see my hands on a wheel.....then virtual hands on another wheel.

"Well done. They have stuck to their word as far as updating as they go along... goes."

Strictly speaking, they have repeated their word. I'll say they've stuck to it when I get the new cars. (Though personally, I'd prefer new menus, and - at a minimum - new sound effects for collisions.)

"and the absence of collision sounds besides a dull thud"

Bad enough when two cars collide, worse still when you hit some taped-up "fencing" and it doesn't so much as budge, and off in the distance you hear two rubbermaid trash bins being smacked together. Totally bizarro-world.

Leave cars for now - there are bigger problems with GT5.
Terrible shadows and regular scenery "pop-ups" are the most irritating bugs in my opinion.
There were no such problems with GT5 Prologue - why did they brake it???
  • Arwin #47 1 year ago

There are definitely some standard cars that I wouldn't mind seeing as a Premium but more recent models would be even better.

Also hope they can bring down the six months per person it currently takes them to model a Premium car, as I'm sure that's what's holding them back currently.

The online is already really good. I just want tgose time trial leaderboards and being able to set tirewear and fuel drain or required pits options. Ok, some more browding and friend invites could be nice too, but the personal lounge and community stuff works well for me as I have 37 GT5 playing friends on my list. ;)
  • monkeywithnoeyes #48 1 year ago

maybe they can do something about the track pop up too? i cant believe a game has pop up in it these days...especially one so high profile
  • Soton4084 #49 1 year ago

To be honest I found the disparity between standard and premium cars to be one of the worst things about GT5. This game has moments of brilliance (for me the first time you drive the Zonda is incredible and the sense of speed is like nothing I've ever experienced in a racing game before), and yet it has a lot of weaknesses. Another one which someone else picked up on is the fact that after a while of racing to gain credits (to get the cars you really want) it feels like a grind. It wasn't like this in GT: Prologue because you could earn credits for online racing (brilliant idea!) and yet that appears to be absent here.

  • handsonhips101 #50 1 year ago

To be honest I don't care about the in car views or the premium models.

I'd rather they spent some time cleaning up the standard cars graphics. I got a mk1 focus rs and a vw lupo. Both look very 32 bit at times, the jagged edges could have easily been sorted surely? I looked at the same cars on my ps2 on a crt. Tbh they look better!

EG, review it again when it's finished, just in time for a face off with Forza 4.
  • SavageEvil #52 1 year ago

I swear nothing but piss and moan, many of you should star in a drama. Shut up already, can't even read much in the way of useful comments, just bitch and moan for most of it. People still complaining about the online, shut up, they said that is what they were fixing, did they not? So far every update thus far has been for the online part, shut the hell up already.

More pissants talking about, game been in production for 5 years, sorry, but all the air flapping out of your gums has yet to amount to much in the way of helping them build any kind of solid online component to a game that desperately needed to be online. I wonder do complainers like many of you have jobs at all? If you do, you probably work at the lowest rung with your crap attitude, no one with ideas and innovation would want to hear a damn thing from pessimistic people such as yourselves.

Instead of lets band together to point out to PD that this is what we would like added and such, we get the usual crap from the morons who complain as if it pays the bills. Gaming is running low on gamers and high on prima donnas who cry at every little fault.

If I have to read one more crap statement about the Veyron not being premium, for goodness sakes we all know. Premium or not, the car still drives like it does in FM3...like a 4000lb beast and can't turn corners. Many of you act like you are going to driving around your damn neighborhood with the car or something. Cry much?

This editorial seems to be taken out of context, but whatever. You can complain things should have been in by the ship date or whatever, little good that is going to do you now isn't it. Either sell the game or you can play it and see what else they can add to it. Take it or leave it, but seriously give it a rest, it's getting old. Like little babies that don't understand, every time there is a GT5 story...are some of you sure you aren't getting paid to moan as much as you do?
