Sackboy, Lara DLC head PS Store update

Plus, download Prototype for £31.99.

Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves, new Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light DLC and PSP platformer Prinny 2 are among the highlights of the latest PlayStation Store update.

The new content, listed on the PlayStation Blog and reproduced in full below, also includes the last two Prince of Persia HD re-releases, new DLC for Assassins's Creed: Brotherhood, DJ Hero 2 and Joe Danger, as well as a bunch of pre-Christmas price cuts.

Slightly less festive, however, is the asking price for the original Prototype, which has just been added for £31.99. Word from the wise: Amazon is selling the Platinum Edition for £11.99.

    £31.99!

    Jesus fuc... No. Just... No.

I would *love* to be at the meeting where £31.99 was decided to be an acceptable price point for a game that retails for £15 or less brand new.

    Wankers.

EDIT: I also just *love* the conveniently placed Zavvi ad which advertises the game for £12.95. Just brilliant.

    That's cheap for Sony!
  • matrim83 #3 1 year ago

Are they insane? No one is gonna buy that for 31.99. I thought EG had gotten their digits switched around.
  • excelexcel #4 1 year ago

40 euro? Prototype is a fucking platinum/360 classics title. Even the most expensive shop would have it at 30 euro maximum. Sony's PS3 download title selection and prices are a joke.

The US store has it $30 of course. Even at that price its a massive rip off.

    thats activision for you,
believe it was even suggested to them by some sony people that price 'might' be too high
  • Malek86 #6 1 year ago

Prinny 2, cool. But my PSP is pretty much fixed on the US account (too many games), so I'll have to wait for the US release.

Darn, why couldn't Sony make the PSP accept multiple accounts content, like the PS3?

I would rather gouge my own eyes out than play Prototype again, it was quite simply the worst game i have played in quite some time, rubbish controls, story and the graphics wernt great either.

£31 sounds like somebody at Sony agrees with me and is keeping you safe from this crap this christmas!

Spend your cash on anything but this turd.

You gotta wonder why Activision have gone through the hassle of getting Prototype certified for sale on the store if they're going to charge that amount. For whatever reason they must not want this to sell.

Expecting a discreet price cut in 3,2,1...............oh wait this is Activision it's probably on special offer at this price.
  • I\'mListening #9 1 year ago

And i remember people yesterday argueing for the death of physical media because it would bring down game prices...
  • captain_Carl #10 1 year ago

People blaming Sony: You're blaming the wrong company. Acti is the one at fault (for a change...)
  • markmitt #11 1 year ago

Seriously, whose idea was it to put OLD titles on the store for stupid amounts? Do they not realise that NO-ONE will ever buy these? Especially when can own a physical product for a third of their asking price. Utter IDIOTS!
  • menage #12 1 year ago

    Prototype isn't even worth a rental:D

    Curious about Sackboy's adventure though.

  • coolbeans #13 1 year ago

I always assumed digital download prices being high were due to retailers refusing to stock a game if they were undercut online.

So publishers are forced to put games on the store at retail price and agree to not undercut retailers, only for the retailers to cut the RRP price and often sell the second hand version a little cheaper instead anyway. Which makes digital distribution look bad and retail look good.

If there is ever a digital only game it often appears to be cheaper, as it doesn't have those restrictions.

We see the same issue with the Xbox 360's games on-demand service. They are always at RRP and never at the discounted rate seen at retailers.

    [edit]
Plus I've noticed quite a few games appear for £31.99 on Sony platforms, which hints at some kind of pricing limitation.

imagine if they (whoever they is) said - [Prototype] is £9.99 on PSN' they would sell loads. Instead they say '£31.99' and every gamer on the planet says GTFO.
  • captain_Carl #15 1 year ago

    @Coolbeans

Actually sometimes, Sony prices their own PSP games cheaper on PSN than at retailers. When God of War: GoS came out, it was about £16 on PSN - a good couple of quid cheaper than anywhere else.
  • slippysloppy #16 1 year ago

I'm glad Sony are keeping their prices high because it's keeping retailers, cheap games and the 2nd hand market in business.

Sony's pricing policy seems to be aimed at the rich, lazy and stupid.

EVERYONE- JOIN THE ONLINE REVOLUTION! (must be a homeowner, 2543% apr, subject to status).

You could bus to the town, buy the game, get a Subway sub, get a bus back, and still have enough for 3 premium iPhone games,or a budget xbox arcade game.... Or an Indie game or two
  • chasejamie #18 1 year ago

Prototype on the Xbox games on demand for 19.99. Why the extra tenner for PS3?
  • chasejamie #19 1 year ago

    Sorry, didn't see above post.
  • Tyronne #20 1 year ago

£31.99 ....my that does sound reasonable, what do you think Gerald the talking pig? ...really well yes that does seem a good price for a game that you can buy cheaper almost anywhere else....whats that? ....No iIthink its a brilliant move on their behalf and I welcome old games coming online with a almost vertical price inbalance...now if you dont mind I really must fly out of the window and get my mind meds off terrance the talking terapin.
  • NotSoSlim #21 1 year ago

Err maybe Sony has a £31.99 limit and MS a £19.99 just a thought. Activation chose to charge that make no mistake, Sonys PSP games have been cheaper than at retail in most cases
  • TopKatt #22 1 year ago

This from Ross McGrath on the Playstation blog regarding the Prototype price:

"I will tell you exactly what happened with this.

I saw the price that Prototype was submitted at a few weeks ago and I discussed it with the Activision account manager here.

I then contacted the Activision representative that I often deal with and flagged the price of Prototype as a concern from my perspective and suggested that they look at lowering the price if at all possible.

This was taken under advisement by Activision and then a few days later I was told that they would like to maintain the price as it is now for the forseeable future.

I will be sure to take it up with them again in the future but for the time being I’ve done all I’m able to do."

  • FuzzyDuck #24 1 year ago

Eyes on Prototype - this is the digital distribution revolution? I'll stick to me SNES, thanks.

Everytime that I think the vitriol towards Activision is a little over the top something like this comes along and sheds a searing light on the wart that the company is to the medium.

I'm truly thankful that everything they release doesn't appeal to me on a gaming level so I don't have to make a decision based on principle.
  • NotSoSlim #26 1 year ago

One good thing about Sonys blogs is that if enough people ask they eventually answer. Activision are a joke in all honesty
  • Whizzo #27 1 year ago

There's only one way to describe that Prototype pricing and that's "fucking mental", how does a game with the physical disc 20 quid RRP turn into £31.99?

In fact you can buy Prototype+Assassin's Creed 2+Just Cause 2 from Amazon for 2p less than buying Prototype from PSN, hmm...

  • Malek86 #29 1 year ago

"Raziel and Kane Character Pack (£2.39/€2.99)"

Still getting the name wrong, EG?

Anyway, if somebody is buying that pack, I'd like to know if it has new dialogue or anything of the sort, or if they're just skins.
  • Laraman #30 1 year ago

The Raziel and Kain pack has dialogue used from previous LOK games (the download is 214MB) :).

Edit: It also has new cutscenes using the dialogue - it is rather hilarious.

lol that is why you have to love pre owned hopefully in future the pre owned market will push publisher to lower prices when a games been out a while. 31 99 is just insane really
  • technicianTed #33 1 year ago

Mental prototype price, i thought microsoft charge too much for their games on demand games, but that is crazy from sony.

    It's only £11.99 on amazon.
