PS3 gamers outraged at Black Ops

Patch makes things worse, accuse fans.

Oops - that still-warm Call of Duty: Black Ops patch seems to have amplified problems with PS3 online multiplayer.

"The retard patch 1.04" thread on the official Black Ops website has pages of dissenters sharing their frustration.

"GG [good game] to them making it a P2P game where the host gets hard freezes," posted an ironic I WTFMyself. "Such failures."

Suzuki1776 replied: "The game seems to be getting worse with each patch as far as connection issues. If you are going to be playing Black Ops a lot then get a 360. They seem to have a lot less issues than us PS3 players."

"I cant even begin to express words to describe how pissed of I am at the hash of this game on the PS3," added an angry Saunter.

"... I am sick to the back teeth of them going on about how there going to patch the knife lunge and stupid little things like that when they wont even acknowledge the huge f*** up they've made on PS and still raked in mountains of money."

"Treyark [sic] have made a complete cock up on this one and they have ruined one of the biggest games of all time," he vented, with the caveat, "And seriously I do really like the game when I could play it."

Patch 1.04, now live, claims to "improve" matchmaking conditions for people with strict or moderate NAT types - precisely the problem many gamers now complain of.

Another of the tweaks was a "negative influencer" for spawn points, which should decrease the chance of returning to life in front of an enemy with a gun.

(All of the patch 1.04 fixes are documented over on the Call of Duty forum.)

"They killed the PS3 version," declared Eurogamer reader Astro-Creature.

"So no chance of them fixing that PS3 Alpha s*** they tried to pass off as retail then?" fumed fellow EG reader Acrid

Treyarch community manager Josh Olin has been accosted on Twitter about the problems. He, however, insists NAT problems are the responsibility of you and your router, not he and his developer.

"That means your Router has a strict NAT, causing your lag," Olin responded to an angry Triadgaming tweet.

"It's not the game," he insisted.

But if you are having problems then he and Treyarch do want to hear from you.

"We are listening to you," Olin promised, "and we've been busy working on updates based on feedback from the community."

"We have already deployed a number of updates, and there will be many more to come."

So, pipe up.

If it is to do with NAT types then why aren't any 360 gamers having issues? Surely it isn't just a coincidence...
  • Deckard1 #2 1 year ago

The best fix I found for this is to play a different game. Works a treat.
  • Dolly #3 1 year ago

Feel sorry for PS3 users on this one. As a lucky owner of a PS3 and a 360, I made the decision a long time ago not to purchase multiplatform games until a comparison was published a few days after launch, detailing the best version to plump for.

I always love reading posts from angry people.

Although I was in their place when Gears of war launched on the PC in 2008. Couldn't even launch it for 2 weeks. Epic forums were burning.
  • Golgo #6 1 year ago

I concur that the connection issues are a real headache now. Worked a treat for me when it was just out, even wirelessly. Now I'm getting frequent disconnects (2 games of out 3 I'd say) and hard freezes even when using an ethernet cable with DL speed of over 15 mbps.
  • DavidBoring #7 1 year ago

at first i was happy, seeing a new patch (i like upgrading) but something really semmed broken. i was kicked out of almost every game that evening, never had any connection before the patch
  • orangpelupa #8 1 year ago

<strong>"That means your Router has a strict NAT, causing your lag,"</strong>

wait wait, so if its the NAT setting fault, why this more problematic in PS3 than in XBOX version? If treyarch can the NAT less problematic in Xbox, they should be able to fix the NAT problem on PS3.

or, is the Xbox Networking software is more robust than PS3? maybe xbox successfully tell uPNP router to do the reqiured settings. But in PS3, its the PSN failed to do the setting.

so maybe treyak should do a collaboration with SONY to fix this? O_o
  • PixelPirate #9 1 year ago

Reminds me of the way the Fallout 3 devs treat PS3 owners as well, completely ignoring all the problems with the game...

Its really becoming a problem for some of the major titles they are clearly being set deadlines that are too tight to hit, and then resources allocated to fix problems on the platform with the most users/ quickest issues to fix after launch, which almost always ends up being the 360 version.

Can we not get trading standards involved, its becoming false advertising? The game should work as advertised if it clearly is broken on release, then the user should get their money back, not store "credit" at the very least.
  • Deckard1 #10 1 year ago

    @altitude2k

Port forwarding’s not working, neither is DMZ’ing- I've tried it on a few different PS3's and different routers (I work on an IT helpdesk and shit loads of people are having this problem) and the NAT is open for anything else but this game. It’s definitely a problem with the game.

Not only do I not play call of duty games, I also Delete anyone I catch playing this garbage from my friends list. Thats how I roll.
  • BOBBYLUPO #17 1 year ago

The last patch made the game play like a flip book in any MP game with more than 1 player. If it's the same with this new one then I only hope Treyarch will accept my router's apology for breaking their game.
  • sneetch #18 1 year ago

Some people seem to be having difficulties telling the difference between a buggy PS3 version of a game and PSN.

    This is disheartening.
  • Widge #19 1 year ago

Its not NAT, its Call Of Duty. I've own MW and MW2 and both of those were utter shits for online. Just freezing and doing nothing. No other game I have owned has done this.

Do what I do, don't buy the fucker ever again.
  • Climhazzard #20 1 year ago

To be fair even on 360 there are plenty of things going off i've never seen happening on any other online game i've got including the previous cod games. Spawning infront of enemies all the time is getting on my nerves big time and a few of my friends have gone back to playing CoD4 and MW2 because of the serious connection issues they're getting.

So no Mr Olin its not our NAT settings, stop trying to cover up the complete con you've pulled. We've spent a fortune on you're game (which by the way has a higher RRP than any other console game ) and it's turned out to be completely awful in my opinion. Either sort the issues out or give us our money back. If this doesn't happen then i won't be buying another Treyarch game in future be it CoD or any other franchise.

These are all 360 issues by the way so dont worry PS3 users you're not getting all of the bad luck!
  • DavoTheDiv #21 1 year ago

been holding off buying this, will wait for a sub £30 price tag. Not bothered about online gaming. Is the single game same on both platforms?
  • Jonny5Alive7 #22 1 year ago

I'm more irritated about getting rid of the knife lunge, it wasn't even an issue its hardly like commando on MW2. They've also done away with Hardline Pro not working on SAM turret packages, surely its called a 'perk' for a reason. You take a risk calling in packages and waiting about for them, so they shouldn't have changed that in imo.
  • Brianstorm #23 1 year ago

Even if Treyarch manage to fix the completely broken net code, how are they going to stop it looking like a ps2 game? All my COD playing ps3 friends went back to mw2 weeks ago, vowing never to purchase a Treyarch developed game, ever again.
  • Bradach #24 1 year ago

I've just put an issue free hour into black ops... Not everyone is having problems
  • DDevil #25 1 year ago

http://www.portforward.com is your friend if you don't know how to sort your NAT settings.

But yeah, 360's online architecture does seem a lot more rugged in general. They don't charge the subscription just for shits and giggles you know?
  • sneetch #26 1 year ago

Seriously though, that's a fantastic LEGO vid!
  • bad09 #27 1 year ago

Well I think the lesson for everyone, on all platforms, is if you consider COD next year wait 6 months before parting with cash. Asking a higher price than everyone else for what we got is disgusting and Activision should be pulled up on allowing it to ship like it.

I've said it before, such a shame as it really is a good COD under all the technical issues.
  • natashaspice #28 1 year ago

One week after launch I stopped playing and I went back to have a little game then I remembered why I stopped playing in the first place. Battlefield bad company 2 is a much better game IMO. Don't think am gonna buy the next call of duty it just seem like it just went downhill after 4
  • kangarootoo #29 1 year ago

That LEGO vid is a top piece of work.

Ummm, and something about FPS network problems.
  • jtodroc #30 1 year ago

The problems with the game are nothing to do with PSN. As others have pointed out, you can play MW2 with absolutely no connection issues right now, whether you have a strict NAT type or open NAT type.

But if you try to play Black Ops, you won't be able to play 2 games in a row without getting kicked out.

regardless of if they fix the problems with online, they wont be able to fix the ridiculous amount of other issues it has, hit detection, lag, general sense of injustice at dying all the time, which i dont get with bc2 (i know if i die its down to me alone)
said at day one this was a poor port with major substandard programming issues, and seems im right. This sucks and most people i know went back to mw2, ive never played cod before, so will avoid like plague from now on again. Bc2 is miles better.
ps the single player is abysmal
  • ZizouFC #35 1 year ago

I regret buying this on PS3. I mean - I regret buying it at all, but at least with MW on my 360 I could play online with no problems!
  • Bartacus #36 1 year ago

    I have a PS3 a Wii & a 360, the order in preference is 360------ PS3-------Wii.

360 is best by a country mile, I never buy any multi games on PS3 until I read the opinions, but I was tempted to buy black ops early, so glad I didn't.

Uncharted 2 is fantastic on PS3 though so it's not all bad.
  • nasanu #37 1 year ago

Lag is due to either a lack of bandwidth (not technically lag) or distance. Neither of those have anything at all to do with the NAT. Your router will either let you make a connection or it won't, either way it will not introduce a wait or reduce bandwidth.

Their defense makes no sense at all.
  • weebl #38 1 year ago

Way to go giving people regular updates as incentives to not trade in Activision!

I played the game online for 30 minutes and that was long enough to see it was inferior to several FPS's already on the market, so I'm glad I traded when I did.
  • TurboBailey #39 1 year ago

After playing Treyarchs version COD3 on PS3 and experiencing lockups / game freezing. I vowed not to play another of their COD titles, it seems as though i've made the right choice, it's a shame for the majority of gamers suffering at their shoddy coding.

two years they've had to work on this, bearing in mind the MP is what will be played the longest that surely is the code that should have had the testing... I hope that gamers vote with their wallets and boycott the next Treyarch verson of COD
  • mss99 #43 1 year ago

Funny how countless other games work flawlessly on my router but this game is just broken online on the PS3. Then they have the cheek to claim it is not them. Tried it with a belkin router, and two different models of d-link and it makes no difference. All my friends have the same issues.

In the past I have put countless hours into the previous COD games but this one just isn't being played. Most of my friends have either already sold it or swore they will not buy any DLC or another COD game again. Thing is I think they are making so much money they just don't care. I'd be suprised if the next game was anywhere near as suucessful after the damage they have done with this one. If makes me laugh when the subject of charging for this online comes up when it is not even playable now.
  • king26 #44 1 year ago

Why are people still buying /playing COD games? What with Killzone 2, MAG and Battlefield Bad Company 2 available, it just makes no sense!!
  • telboy007 #45 1 year ago

This games has all sorts of issues when it chooses me as host, the fps drops to about 5 and its more fun watching paint dry, thankfully that doesn't always happen. Also the spawn thing, I'm more annoyed when the guy I've just killed spawns somewhere behind me and kills me within 5 seconds of his re-spawn.
  • Fab4 #46 1 year ago

I've said it once, and I'll say it again...if developers actually spent time on improving their netcode instead of reskinning broken, previous games, perhaps they wouldnt run into the routine crys of "online is fucked" from the get-go, nevermind after patching it.

Also, perhaps gaming journalists could mention something as important as netcode whenever they review these games which are obviously online oriented. Instead of running us through what the maps look like.

Edit: Btw, Josh Olin (JD2020) is a two-faced cunt....has been ever since he took on the role of community manger at CoD3.

I have this on 360 as i will rarely buy a game for the PS3 that comes out on both machines, because the PS3 game rarely rates equal let alone better than its 360 counterpart. I had similar issues on COD4 where my modem kept coming up as Strict no matter what i did with it. Fortunately i could join games nearly all the time but my issue was going into games in parties. I would get kicked or others would get kicked. I was fortunate that before i had to replace my router there was a firmware update and that sorted my issue.

This seems typical of most developers/publishers though as technically the NAT setting is the players problem to fix. If this is the case though they probably shouldnt state in the fixes that this will be resolved. I played MW2 on the PS3 and lets say it only cemented my decision to get the 360 version. My advise start looking for your money back and dont buy the next COD title.
  • fiery_jackass #48 1 year ago

  • GaryStew1980 #49 1 year ago

Lest we forget Activision actually want to charge a subscription service for COD titles if they could get away with it. Is see some 360 users on here saying they have similar issues but there doesnt seem to be near the same amount of hassle or anger on 360 forums. The main issue i have is getting disconnected from my party or others getting disconnected when joining games, honesly i have had very few other issues other than this game just not being all that good. Probably the worst COD title if you ask me online anyway. Ive even gone back to Medal of Honor thats how poor it is.
  • telboy007 #50 1 year ago

I think that message of the day about how multiplayer is free with every copy of CoD:BO is a masked warning from Treyarch. I think we will see extra charges in one of the next installments.
  • BuddyChrist #51 1 year ago

I used to have Nat issues on halo 3 every so often, but it just started the matchmaking process over again. Since then, I've never had that on the 360.

Saying that, I've never had it at all with the ps3. Nat is a bullshit excuse. Games should be made to work in diverse countries with diverse connections.
  • GamesConnoisseur #52 1 year ago

DDevil: http://www.portforward.com is your friend if you don't know how to sort your NAT settings.

Please leave off any conspiracy theories, about how its reasonably okay on X360 OR that its not affecting other PS3 online games even with moderate or strict NAT settings.

The fact is not going to change, that by having your NAT setting NOT on OPEN will eventually results in SOME kinds of problems, that is guaranteed. FULL STOP.

SO what the best thing to do?

Go to PortForward and from there find out how to change the settings on your router, I did and my god what a goddamn difference it made!

Got years of smoother online gaming... so its free advice that been repeated everywhere but seem some gamers want to keep it on strict or moderate setting? Why?
  • vizzini #53 1 year ago

The big problem in comparing whether it is game specific is the big difference in number of people connected to each network(PSN/live) to access any game or service.

Live has 25million accounts of which only half(12.5M) are gold to play online but all could be downloading or streaming a film(mostly with Wired) and because they subscribe the user base is highly controlled, easy to monitor and predictable their usuage.

By comparison Playstation network has (80% of 40M) 32 million all of which could be playing some game or using a service(an even mix of wired or wireless); but also have the option for large numbers of users to sporadically change their usage patterns; as was the case with ModNation Racers.

Typically in network environments, the larger the connected pool of users, the more diverse the network environment. Ie Up/down stream bandwidth, DMZ, port forwarding etc, MTU packet size range.

It is quite possible that the PS3 version of the game's network code is at fault, but when I used my (Nintedo DS/Wii/PS3 &) 360 for online play (in the free 1 month gold trial), I had all these same problems (and I've got a degree in Computer Networking/telecoms.

The main thing that has changed for the PS3 in successive firmwares is that it is doesn't warn users about suboptimal networking configuration (NAT) in the way it did, or the way the 360 still does, and will stop you from connecting at all to live.

Personally I think anyone having problems should in the first instance check their cable modem/router for overheating. And switch to using a wired connection than wireless where possible.

Ideally you would have a 2nd identical router(with power supply) cloned and unused, fresh for online play, or have your internet off (router/mode switched powered down) for half hour prior to play(instead of torrenting 2minutes before). You might also want to log into your cable modem and clear down the log file. Virgin regularly crashes my modem with what appears as a denial of service attack, using a firmware update my modem already has; which floods the log file and kills the quality of service.

Other options to try are to setup your network using static IP addresses, so you can disable DHCP, which adds to latency in the network negotiation and stresses the CPU in your router more. In some cases you might want to try and use a lower or higher MTU packet size in the router ISP configuration page. 1500 is normal, but sometimes a lower setting around 1470 might help (typically on slower broadbands; who should never be serving games) and sometimes a MTU of 1600 should be used (for larger cable broadbands +10Mbps; who should always be trying to serve games)

Other PS3 games might be less affected by such router/internet network issues, because they just don't have as many online players; but it is still possibly a problem with the game's network code on PS3.

I'm sorry Vizzini, but while you throw in all the correct technical terms and info, your reasons for differentiating between PSN and XBL are so spurious its hard to take anything else you say seriously. Particularly this:

"Live has 25million accounts of which only half(12.5M) are gold to play online but all could be downloading or streaming a film(mostly with Wired) and because they subscribe the user base is highly controlled, easy to monitor and predictable their usuage.

By comparison Playstation network has (80% of 40M) 32 million all of which could be playing some game or using a service(an even mix of wired or wireless); but also have the option for large numbers of users to sporadically change their usage patterns; as was the case with ModNation Racers."

  • vizzini #57 1 year ago

Fab4, iirc they were Microsoft's and Sony's recent statements about connected consoles, and in hindsight I should have picked my words more intelligently about gold subscribers; I was really just trying to say that any subscriber to anything is easier to cater for in life. But I guess my remark was fuelled by an irritation with so many people implying that Microsoft's unicast/multicast P2P internet is some how better than anyone else's.

Now that sounds very absurd imo.
  • Fur_Cough #58 1 year ago

Download a patch that makes things worse, go to a random website passed to you by a compugeek, attempt to understand compuspeak gibberish, download a file, arse about with your software and hardware settings, hope it works and doesn't screw your computer.

Can't believe this stuff is still going on. Let's party like it's 1999.

  • dnd #59 1 year ago

OT: i love that lego vid.
  • Fab4 #60 1 year ago

Subscribers are only easier to cater for if you are in control of the equipment they use at their home. Neither XBL or PSN are...people are free to change ISP/Modem/Router at will. Subscribers may be easier to cater for if either XBL/PSN were providing dedicated servers and needed numbers to adequately provision resources for them, however the majority of games on both networks do not use dedicated servers.

Both PSN and XBL are, for the most part, matchmaking services (they put you in contact with others playing the same game). Once you have passed matchmaking, the numbers of connected users to the network will have little impact (unless its large enough to take out the matchmaking service, which is unlikely), either will the types of games/services they are using. Once you are in game, and playing, all lag is down to your connection to the host, who is also playing...nothing else.

  • Boogalicious #61 1 year ago

My console is under DMZ and I have forwarded the necessary ports on my router.
My PS3 Connection and Status has my NAT type listed as Type 2.
I have no problems with every other game, in fact it's been better in regards to EA published games where I would get randomly disconnected.

Yet upon installing the 1.04 update my connection in-game is listed as Strict and I wasn't able to join my friend in a lobby nor could I invite him over to my lobby.

With how gimped the PS3 version of the game already is on top of these constant issues I can understand people's frustration - I would be too if I didn't have anything else to play.

What I wonder is how this latest patch was passed by Treyarch's/Activiation's AND Sony's QA...
It's of no surprise that the official forums are experiencing high traffic.

    *sigh*
/waits for next BlackOps patch... whilst playing another title.

I have done everything and when I say everything I mean EVERYTHING to try and get my NAT open. It just won't work here, and I have learned to live with that. What I can't live with is the fact that pre-patch the game worked fine, I could find games in less than 5 seconds by myself. Now after the patch, I can't find a game anymore or its a laggy one. (playing on Xbox360)

So Mr. Olin, don't act surprised when you get an angry tweet and you're response is: 'its your fault not mine' that I will get very fucking angry.

  • sandmania #68 1 year ago

My NAT is also strict due to my router type but I never had a problem with disconnects, etc on Black Ops before the update. PS3 owners have a good reason to voice their frustration. And for those saying play another game instead, what kind of logic is that? It doesn't fix the problem. I'm sick of people like you telling everyone else what they should be playing. Pigeonholing people by what games they play is low. Just let them enjoy whatever games they wish to play - or not, as the case is here :-(
  • Rens11 #69 1 year ago

    hillarious!

I've seen how rubbish COD3 and WAW was in terms of netcode and COD:BO seems even more useless.

I would like to know how old code theese guys (and most other teams around the world) are actually using as its really funny how they fail to do a code example straight from netcode wiki's/SDK's from 2007>.

Last netcode i worked on was from 2005 and that was more sofisticated than this pile of shite!.

PS: NAT settings has nothing to do with theese issues in the 1.04 for sure, they messed up and they should fix this mess soon.

The blame here lies strictly with the developer, there's no two ways about it. It's well established that they are a lazy bunch and are living off the legacy that Infinite Ward created. COD3 was abysmal, both on 360 and PS3. World at War was better, but again, it was just a WW2 reskin of COD4. That game too had various problems on PS3. Now we're onto Black Ops and its not coincidence - Treyarch are terrible at developing multiplatform games. Quanum of Solace was also a steaming pile of cow dung on the PS3.

In contrast, Infinite Ward have created like for like experiences on both PS3 nd 360. I admit that I mostly USED to play COD games on my 360, but I did play it on the PS3 at a mate's place and the experience, minus the different controller is EXACTLY the same when playing online. Having played Black Ops online on a friend's PS3, the problems are clearer than ever. Why is it that as soon as he puts MW2 into his console its perfect, with an open NAT status and lag-free gameplay wheras when he puts in Black Ops, it states NAT is open but there is all sorts of shitty lag, game crashing, unexpected boots from the game, and in some cases, erased stats?

Take the blame Treyarch. I really do hope that gamers get together and file a lawsuit against those incompetent developers aas they will win quite comfortably. I mean c'mon, 2 million+ PS3 gamers can't be wrong, nor do they all use routers to play online. Treyarch and Activision need to wake up before it's too late.

    ^^

I play Uncharted 2 online quite regularly and almost everyone has a headset? I think that arguement is a bit ancient now. Many PS3 gamers have invested in a headset. But for some reason I really can't comprehend, there does seem to be a large amount of Whiney (mostly American) brats ruining the experience on Xbox Live. I find it odd because if kids are playing shooters and only shooters, surely they'd be better served on PS3 where the experience is free and parents get a good Blu-Ray player to boot?

CoD3 at least was trying something new in terms of hosting. It actually used a P2P networking model, rather than Client/Server. Because of that, setting up your router was even more important (as it is with most P2P applications).

When everything works on it (which is more often than not) it is an amazing MP experience. 1hr long games with 24 players...no rage-quitting hosts and going back to a lobby to restart a game. No stuttering lag because the 'host' has a shit connection. I wish every netcode was as abysmal.

Edit: For those seeing a difference between Treyarch and IW games after MW...good job, considering its the same fucking basic netcode.

If you play MW2, then play Black Ops, then you can notice the lack of connection problems on MW2 quite clearly.
  • king26 #80 1 year ago

I think there are less abusive 12 year olds on PSN because most people I play against on BFBC 2, killzone 2 and MAG are adults. I notice children tend to play COD and halo games.a lot more
  • jtodroc #81 1 year ago

I always just mute anyone I don't know so I don't hear the abusive teenagers.

  • joelstinton #85 1 year ago

had enough. Just literally walked out and brought Battlefield 2. Only to come home and its wants a 1750mb update. yowsers.

Ashame really, as a lot of the maps in BO are better than MW2, weapons, perks etc are more balanced, but i can't play a friggin game.
  • man.the.king #86 1 year ago

    @mossychops001

"PSN is better for multiplayer games. XBOX live is full of assholes telling everyone they are gay. "

To be fair, I don't think that's a phenomenon exclusive to either XBL or PSN. It's probably more to do with the age-group of people and intellectual & emotional maturity (or lack thereof).

I play MP chiefly on PSN, and I have come across a couple of instances (esp in BO) where I've been called, well, things, just because I beat someone in free-for-all.

lol yeah that update is a beauty, but it apparently has all the maps etc in for vietnam, so when u buy name, the download should be minimal. I've been playing my brothers blops, as i traded mine in after few days, and he refuses to play it, and just plays mw2.
Think underneath theres a decent game, and i dont even notive the resolution like i thought i would, its reasonable, as long as u sit back a decent distance from ur tv( i do anyway), but the lag and disconnection, paired with awful hit detection and other silly issues like, grenades that explode almost on landing and seem like , even if u start running away, they still blow u up, make this game just not fun. It could be good, it just isnt somehow.

I at least know in bc2 that my skill and tactics are responsible for me living or dying, whereas in cod, i just feel injustice all the time at my untimely deaths. (people shooting u behind a wall, whhen according to kill cam you not behind the wall at all(or corner) stabbing motions not connecting, but u die anyway, etc etc
  • man.the.king #88 1 year ago

Black Ops (and esp BO MP) has made me realize just how talented and effective Infinity Ward were. I have MW and MW2 on PS3, and have almost never had the problems I have had with BO, both in terms of SP (PS3 visual issues), frustrating, badly-managed difficulty spikes and poorly implemented MP.
  • funkateer #89 1 year ago

"The best fix I found for this is to play a different game. Works a treat. "

Great suggestion for Trayarch, patch Black Ops so that it becomes MW2 :)
  • vizzini #90 1 year ago

I don't actually trust uPnP in many devices; I've had so many issues with devices timing out with uPnP or failing setup in PC networking; probably because they don't fully comply with a particular uPnP (version's) specification.

I typically disable uPnP/DHCP, and use a statically assigned set of IP addresses on home routers, and set the console IP address for DMZ to eliminate the need for port forwarding (for initial setup)

People struggling since the update and with the requisite networking knowledge, might want to try that configuration, to see if disabling uPnP fixes things; as it is possible that the netcode was upgraded to handle a newer uPnP version, but in doing so has now crippled consumer class routers that aren't meeting the new standard, or didn't full meet the earlier uPnP specifications perfectly.
That is a nightmare for developers, if they comply perfectly to a standard, but many devices don't operate correctly within the protocol, it means they've got to write error handling routines they shouldn't need to.

I'd even suggest for people unable to disable(uPnP) & reconfigure, to switch off any other computers/devices on the network while trying to attach, in case a Windows Xp, Vista, Windows 7 or MacOSX discovery services(uPnP) that is intercepting and responding to packets is causing issues.

i find it funny that my nat type on ps3 is "2" which is open however on blackops its set as strict. now then dickhead, whos got the issue with nat types?
  • Lord_Gremlin #92 1 year ago

I just never buy this shit. Playing it makes you look bad. Like you're some teenage retard or whatever...

As for 360 version - Activision is getting a small % of XboxLive Gold subscription money. Hence they made sure game is fine - otherwise MS would stop paying them.
  • Dr_Wookiee #93 1 year ago

This is all lovely. What does NAT actually mean?
    I'm guessing here:
    Network Access Time?
    Nacent Analogue Triangle?
    Not Actually Tits?
  • Heykiz #94 1 year ago

This patch made things worse! I went from NAT type Open to strict!! WTF Treyarch, I had no problem playing online! If you can't fix the matchmaking stop making it worse!
  • coolbritannia #95 1 year ago

    Treyarch are Xbots.
  • siallen #96 1 year ago

i made the mistake of selling my 360 as i was bored with it ,replaced it with a ps3, thinking of swapping right back cod is unplayable and gt5 is a letdown compared to forza , i have doubled my internet connection speed and all games play rubbish online on the ps3 , when i had my 360 xbox live is 1000 times better
  • GamerGuides #97 1 year ago

@vizzini: I have BOTH the PS3 and 360 versions of Black Ops (for work reasons) and I can clearly state that the 360 version is worlds apart from the PS3 version as far as connection quality goes. I managed quite a few uninterrupted games over wireless on the 360, then no less than 10 minutes later I kept getting numerous connection interrupted issues on the PS3 version (and I've even tried the PS3 over Ethernet leaving the 360 on wireless with the same router).

Which is why I *only* play the PS3 version when I', specifically asked to for work purposes. Oh, and I have an Open NAT with uPnP working perfectly. So it sure as hell ain't that!
  • DRUNK3N-_-DRAGON #98 1 year ago

should have listened to me a month ago when i told everybody to stay away from this shit but did you listen? no you didn't and now look at the teary eyed gamers lol. just glad i got a refund.
  • kirankara #99 1 year ago

    @DRUNK3N-_-DRAGON

lol can only agree with u im afraid, traded mine a few days after i bought it whilst it was worth more than i paid for it. I cant believe they still not fixed it a month in though. Hope the lawsuit against them sticks(doubt it though)

i borrowed brothers unused copy and same shit as before and then some , so just giving up on iy now
  • Fab4 #100 1 year ago

"This is all lovely. What does NAT actually mean? "

    Network Address Translation

It basically allows your private IP addresses to use a single public IP address. Every packet that comes into/out of your router goes through a set of rules where it can be filtered, NATed and/or Mangled (i.e. the contents of the packet are changed). Google 'netfilter' for a fun read ;)
  • borkedconsole #101 1 year ago

You''ll all complain now, but next november, when MW3 is released you'll rush to buy it at launch date and you'll be complaining again at the game being borked on your ps3 and 360.. You the gamers are the problem, not treyarch, or activision
  • kirankara #102 1 year ago

    @borkedconsole

    i agree and disagree.
Activision and Treyarch are to blame for producing such a poor piece of software and selling it to the public, the public are guilty of tolerating it, but for a lot of people , they had no idea of the issues upon buying it.The only other thing i can blame the public for , is buying into the hype, but for a lot of people , they had no reason to think they would receive anything other than a functional game, mw2 worked( if you think the game is no good, that's irrelevant, it still worked as it was supposed to most the time).; therefore, i ultimately revert back to blaming the devs and publisher for producing this awful piece of software and not releasing it in a fit state, that allows it to work as it was advertised and sold.

hope that the limitless greed and lack of integrity of Activision comes back to bite them in the ass, and that we no longer have to tolerate the endless, soulless rehashing of franchises with no respect for the people buying them.

100 posts in and no one has said the obvious?

Black Ops on PSN and XBL use Peer to Peer. Microsoft doesn't have a magic wand that settles your NAT settings. Christ, people here just believe all the stupid ass marketing these days, "Play on Xbox Live because its just better".

    Placebo at it's finest.
  • RKOwned #106 1 year ago

I dont know if this is a Treyarch thing or a PSN thing. Maybe both?
  • Sevens #107 1 year ago

Haha. That's what you get when you keep buying games such as Fable 2, Fable 3, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Of course (these) publishers won't mind throwing out heavily flawed - damaged, defective - products when there's little to no negative reaction (in terms of purchases). This has become a valid business strategy for them.

The very least you can do is not buy the game until a working - and complete - patch has been released. But hey, do as you please.
  • Loghorn #108 1 year ago

The lesson for today: If you want to buy most multiplats, buy them on 360.
  • rivuzu #109 1 year ago

Only good thing about Black Ops was Dead Ops Arcade.

"The best fix I found for this is to play a different game. Works a treat."

This. Getting traded in today. MW2 showed me how great online multiplayer can be, Black Ops showed me it at it's broken worst.

Shame really, cause wager matches were fucking genius. Oh well.
  • CptNascimento_BR #111 1 year ago

We have to start a campain on facebook, twiter, foruns, etc, to boycott the download content, if nobody buy it until them fix all the problems, next time they are going to think twice before treat the customers like this. sorry my bad english, i think you undertood me.
  • combmakerswe #112 1 year ago

Makes a lot of sense - I must have gotten a new NAT when I installed the patch.

It´s not marketing - it´s people developing for the 360 as the lead platform, with the PS3 an afterthought. Had I known what a PITA Black Ops and New Vegas would have been on the PS3, I would have gotten a 360.
  • Fab4 #114 1 year ago

"Black Ops on PSN and XBL use Peer to Peer."

    No! No! No!

It is client/server. Just because the server is one of your peers, it doesnt make it peer to peer.
  • Lucodeath #115 1 year ago

I know somebody who traded the xbox version for the ps3 version, Why I said, cos its a better port was the reply.

Fab4: It is client/server. Just because the server is one of your peers, it doesn't make it peer to peer.

That isn't true if it is using a P2P communication protocol; as it would technically be multicast peer to peer, which isn't strictly client/server.

Client/Server in a traditional sense would operate without the need for PSN/XBL to hand-off the Serving (P2P hosting) of games. In a true client/server environment, clients(unicast peers typically in these situations) wouldn't get thrown out of PSN/XBL when they have communication issues with the server (multicast host), they would just lose their connection to the host.
