PS Plus exclusive DC Universe beta access

Subscribers get free LBP PSP add-on.

European PlayStation Plus subscribers have exclusive access to the DC Universe Online beta, Sony has announced.

All Plus members are included and the download is being added to the Plus section of the EU PlayStation Store right now, PlayStation Network product manager James Thorpe said on the EU PlayStation Blog.

The beta requires around 15GB of space on your PS3 hard disk. Ouch. Sony said it can take an average of three to four hours to download – or more depending on your broadband internet connection.

"It will definitely be worth it though!" Thorpe said.

Meanwhile, PS Plus subscribers get LittleBigPlanet PSP add-on Turbo! Pack for free. Open world action game Prototype is also out today as a full game trial.

OMG I can't wait for this!

Sole reason I bought a PS3 as already have a 360, was gutted when Marvel Universe Online and Champions Online were cancelled for the 360 :(

15gb of space? Wow, cannot wait tho

I seem to remember that my old ISP in the UK thought that 15GB was considered unfair usage of the broadband and would begin charging an extraordinary amount of money extra every time you went over that per month. Ouch.

I'm very interested in this game, which is a first for an MMO with me.

I dread to think how long this download/install is going to take on my PS3.

I have been quite disappointed with some of the Plus goodies in the last couple of updates but stuff like this is much more like it. Still undecided on whether I'll renew my subscription next week.

I take it the beta has been running for a while? Anyone played it yet?

guess it's time to get a PS Plus subscription
  • I\'mListening #8 1 year ago

I'm sorry guys but paying to beta test someones game for them?
  • RevanNL #9 1 year ago

Well, it's not new. You're still beta testing Fallout New Vegas, or F1 2010 or Gran Turismo 5 or...

Come off it guys we've been through this time and time again. You pay your money and for that you get content worth more than the sub for free and at a discount and you also get access to some betas.

You're not directly paying to get into the beta it's just part of your deal.

    Well I couldn't download 15gb anyway.
  • captain_Carl #12 1 year ago

Half an hour down, 15 hours to go.

    *twiddles thumbs*
  • DavoTheDiv #13 1 year ago

50mb cable broadband. Will take me about half an hour to download :)
  • Arwin #14 1 year ago

Cool, a 1h and 15 minute download ... It's the install for this one that I dread more!

Will see though - I haven't ever played an MMO yet, and this isn't exactly the most exciting theme for it that I've come across either ...

130mb client download and then you have to update the game which is 15gb i would presume, nasty but still doing it :p

... So comes the day that I am tempted to purchase playstation plus. Can I just buy a 90 day subscription and still get access?

I can not believe I am considering this... Let's see if i manage to regain my sanity by the time I get back home from work :p
  • SpookyTang #17 1 year ago

aye 90 day access will get you in, it's what i'm on

    @DavoTheDiv

I'm on 50 Mbit cable as well, so assuming full speed - 6 MB/s - that amounts to around 21 GB per hour. I'm usually "only" able to hit 2-3 MB/s from the PSN store, and my downloads after the last two store updates were unfortunately crawling along at around 10% of that speed
That's the first time in a long time I've experienced crippling download speeds from the store so I hope it was just a temporary issue. I downloaded a couple of large game patches around the same time and they were breezing along as quickly as usual.

Well, I better get started on that DCU download :). If the vast majority of the download is done from within the client I imagine it might use peer-to-peer - the last time I tried that with a PS3 beta (can't recall if it was AC: Brotherhood or might have been further back in the MAG beta) it was less than speedy if I recall correctly (and I have no ISP limitations on p2p traffic).

I'll be downloading after 2100hrs, as Virgin Media traffic shape anything below 50Mb speedwise, 15Gb for a demo, how big is the main game??!!

It would be nice for those who've downloaded this just get a newer piece of software for the final release so as no need to reinstall the final code again

I can almost hear Kevin Conroys' gravelly voice now.....

    @reelbigkris

I actually got a 90 day sub just for the Killzone 3 beta. I'm nearly tempted to subscribe again when that expires as I've actually gotten some decent stuff out of it.

Careful guys, people are complaining about the beta not working and the Sony staff are all away getting drunk. gonna stop my download till any problems are solved. http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/12/1...

I downloaded it first time, but it didn't work. Downloaded it second time and now i'm applying the update. Taking fucking ages though.
  • sickpuppysoftware #24 1 year ago

I set it off at 4:30 last night. I got to watch the opening movie just before I went to bed.
  • Miths #25 1 year ago

I downloaded it just before I went to bed last night. The store download (121 MB if I recall correctly) took a minute and the 15 GB "update" within the client was done within less than an hour.

I'm looking forward to getting started today, the servers were up and running when I shut down last night, so I'm hoping the beta isn't run on a limited schedule with only a few hours of server time a day.
